Herman Wedemeyer, a Kanaka Maoli from Hilo, Hawaii, left his mark at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, California. •
He was a St. Louis Graduate back when St. Louis was still called St. Louis College, and when Hawai’i was still the Republic of Hawai’i during the first 50 years of illegal occupation by the United States. •
This man set the tone for all Kanaka and Polynesian athletes that are playing college and professional sports. •
He held all the records at Saint Louis as a half back and went on to set all the records at Saint Mary’s College that are still untouched today. (Saint Mary’s discontinued their football program about a decade ago). •
From his hard work, dedication, and tenacity on and off the football field, “Squirman Herman” was up for the Heisman Trophy Race in 1945 where he placed 4th. The winner that year was Doc Blanchard, a Westpoint student playing fullback for the Black Knights. •
Regardless of his heisman trophy finish, Herman Wedemeyer was still drafted by the Los Angeles Dons (Rams) as the 9th pick of the first round. •
He led the NFL in Punt Return Yardage that year but got let go and picked up by the Baltimore Colts before retiring that following year.
Herman soon returned home. Later on in his life, he was an active politician in the Honolulu City Council and later transitioned into the acting field, playing Sergeant Lukela in the original Hawaii 5-0. •
Honored to be able to feel his mana on the campus of Saint Mary’s on our (@cheysaludez ) trip. And even better, my sister, @ash_mac85 is a 2007 grad from Saint Mary’s! •
Oh the impact Hawai’i has made on world history! The imprint of Aloha is everywhere!
In 2016, Saint Mary's MFA in Creative Writing began providing the Kearny Street Workshop scholarship to an incoming Asian Pacific American student who would spend the upcoming spring semester working with @kearnystreetworkshop . This year’s scholar, Rebecca Samuelson shares her reflections on working with KSW. Link in bio. Thank you to KSW Director and MFA alumnus @jasonbayani for his mentorship of @stmarysca MFA students. 🙏
