I’m so excited about figuring out how to cross over backwards, it’s on my story and I’m also making it a post. I just ran out of room at the end of the video lol this makes backwards skating so much easier, I was doing it wrong before haha
Pt1: transitioning forward - something I’ve had trouble with for a while.
Pt2: getting more comfortable with 180s
Pt3: practicing spins -you probably can tell but on my right foot I’m using the back wheels and on my left I’m using my front wheels. I’m trying to find that balance on my spins :)

On a sunny afternoon between California coaching sessions, I was able to drop by the S-1’s warehouse in LA to understand better how things are made. 🔧✨
I was given a tour of the headquarters and had what turned out to be a several hours long conversation with Dan McCashin, one of the company’s co founders, or as many know him by, the “guy in the white lab coat” from the S1 ads.👨🏼🔬⬅️ Turns out his first roller derby tournament was the same as mine! We were both in Burlington, Vermont in 2012, both “fresh meats” of roller derby in each our own way, attending what was called then the “East Region Playoffs”. We recalled some of our first great derby moments, including Montreal’s international friendly but very serious rivalry with London, which culminated in a heart breaking loss for Montreal that weekend. Those were memories of strong emotions that are still vibrant to this day.
So on top of exploring a maze made of giant piles of boxes, learning about helmets, pads, quality control, and all kinds of manufacturing wonders, I also got to know better someone who has a genuine interest for the sport and who sees the beauty in its brutal elegance. It was lovely to see his eyes shine at the names of great skaters of past times he got to know through the years.
Perhaps I’ll be able to take you guys with us back to that day, as some of our derby conversations were recorded. 🎥
To be continued!
Garage skate. I found out that transitioning from backwards to forward skating is easier if I turn to my right instead of my left like I was previously doing. I am also feeling more comfortable going downhill backwards :) hope today was a great skate day for you all! 💕
