This is how our day started and ended... Murphy got into his desitine, covered himself. For those of you wondering how hard can it be to remove said desitine off your child? The answer is... INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT. After washing his hair 5 times, we ended up at daycare. Our oldest went to KINDERGARTEN- first day of school. I cried, he didn’t. Now it’s wine time for this momma. #babiesdontkeep#murphy#sbarnette#desitine#rwa#rwa2018#winetime
Breakfast and a book:
I'm a week into doing a Ketogenic diet with Intermittent fasting, and over the last 3 weeks (since I made the decision to tackle this mindfully, just before #RWA2018 ), I'm coming up on a loss of almost 20 pounds (I'm at 18 pounds lighter, to be more specific). I also came home from the national conference with a renewed desire to tackle my writing, polish what I have, and draft what's merely outlined, in my 12+ manuscripts on the writing shelf.
Part of this is a new habit I'm working on: Breakfast and a book (currently, 3 days a week, I'm skipping breakfast). Today, the menu was bacon and an egg, with a side of Dazzling Dialogue by James Scott Bell. The book was far more interesting than the food, to be honest, but I have a whole new set of tools for sifting through the mess that is my current WIP, Little Sister.
If you'd like to check out Bell's book for yourself (review coming to @ThriceReadBooks in the near future), you can find it at Amazon here: https://amzn.to/2AP04hQ (affiliate link)
I’m a little late in posting these pictures because I’ve been in the writing cave since I got home from #rwa2018 conference. Better late than never. I’m dividing my pictures into three groups: Pre-conference, Conference, and Harlequin party, because that deserves a category unto itself! Here is Album # 1: Pre-– conference #nancyrobardsthompsonbooks#writersofinstagram#writerslife#lovemyjob
Are you a podcast listener? I love them. I tend to alternate between those and audiobooks. One of the most fun things I did at #RWA2018 was attend a live recording of the @smartbitches podcast. Did I take any pictures? Nope! I am terrible at real-time social media, so here's the fun little earbud case I "won". We played Cards Against Romance Tropes, which was laughter inducing, especially when combined with a glass or 2 of wine at altitude. Sadly, the game is not available for sale, so you'll just have to enjoy it vicariously through us RWA attendees by listening to episode 309 of Smart Podcast, Trashy Books. The game was emceed by chief smart bitch, @sarah.wendell, and teams were captained by @alisharaiwrites and @meloniejohnson Despite the fact that you'll see more donuts on my feed, appropriately for this vegetarian, I was #teamkale 🎙
If you are a romance reader and you are not listening to the podcast, now you have 309 (310 on Friday) episodes of smart women talking about romance, other books, and pop culture to binge on. Good stuff, and it will load up your TBR, which of course you need, right?
Q: What do Chad Harper and Australian cattle tags have in common?
A: Absolutely... nothing. 🤦🏻♀️ UNTIL NOW!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Thank you @GTF_AUASA and @agrifuturesau for a fabulous indoctrination into the world of agriculture. #GTF18#WIARSA#RWA2018#PlantASeedForSafety
OMG! I totally forgot about these souvenirs from #RWA18 . @marybehre made the necklace - which I freaking love! 😍 It was such an incredible surprise.
Someone pressed the #CAMDEN keychain into my hand at the Literacy Signing, and I can't remember who. If you know, please DM me. I want to give them credit. 🙂
**Mystery solved! The keychain was made by @geri_krotow 😀💜
Happy Monday, Friends!
I still haven’t recovered from #rwa2018 . I learned so much while I was there and I’m very glad I went. It was different from my first time around, not as intimidating, and I came more prepared for where I am on my writing career. It was exactly what I needed to hear at the time I needed to hear it. Coupled with the Novel Intensive Workshop a week later, and my brain is overflowing with ideas and information. Learn from everything around you, soak up as much as you can and use it to broaden your base of information. You will only be richer for it. #mondaymissive#mondaymotivation#writersofinstagram#authorsofinstagram#bethesponge
Many years ago, several writers tried to dissuade me from joining Romance Writers of America. Romance is not always a respected. It was certainly frowned upon by many of my Stanford professors. RWA has been an interesting place to learn and meet other great writers. If we are being honest, most writing organizations are not welcoming. But this one has been good to me. This organization has also been plagued with imperfections. That's the way the world works. I took some time off fiction writing to write different things, and now I'm back at a strange time that makes me feel vulnerable to my publishing journey. I've been writing seriously for 15 years, and I have a single book to my name. Lots of people make excuses for me. I have a demanding job. I have 4 little kids who watch me write on the sidelines of the soccer field. I have excuses enough to write a book. But the story is not that simple. I love writing a lot. I love books. A lot. Writing saves me. I can create happiness and joy and pain. Part of that pain is persevering. Part of that joy is having good writing friends. I wish I could name them all. I will not dwell on the white writers who profit from adding "diversity" to their books. I will not dwell on an industry who is still trying to find a place for all of us. ALL. There were once two strangers who dried my tears after some bad writing news. I will never ever forget their kindness. There was once a woman named Suzanne Brockmann who spoke the truth. I will not forget her fire. I have written a letter to her on @medium https://goo.gl/4pnSWm Link in bio #nickireads#weneeddiversebooks#ownvoices#rwa2018#amwriting#books#romance#publishing#inclusion#diversity#summerreading
One final memory from #RWA18 is really a collection of memories from several conferences that led to last week. (Let's see if I can type this without tears, lol.) I met @kristan.higgins at my 2nd RWA. I was a volunteer at the Literacy Signing, and Kristan was the headlining author in my row. She had a broken leg, and I remember moving the furniture so she wouldn't have to walk all the way around to get to her seat. She didn't ask us to, didn't demand anything of us. She would have walked, I'm sure of it. And she was very grateful and gracious, despite her obvious discomfort. I remember asking for a photo with her (bottom left) and she obliged. We exchanged very few words, but her humility and dedication to her readers left an impression on me.
The next year, in NYC, I was sitting at a table with a friend in the nearly-empty bar when Kristan pulled up a chair and asked us how were doing. She asked about our writing, and if we had any questions. I was so awestruck, my mind went blank. But we kept bumping into each other, in hallways and on elevators, and it became a kind of running joke.
Over the next two years, I got to know Kristan a bit, mostly through social media. We share a sense of humour (thank goodness!) and she's made me feel like I belonged in this industry by valuing my opinion and never belittling my experiences. She has championed my writing, and has become a mentor to me. Sometime, during all of this, we've become friends. I can't point to the moment that happened because Kristan sort of sneaks up on you. One minute she's on a pedestal, and the next she's pulling you up to stand beside her. She is a firm believer in paying it forward, and that's another mission we share.
In Denver, Kristan and I laughed a lot (her laugh is contagious!) and cried too, mostly tears of joy and gratitude for the things that seemed to be happening around us all. I sat with her when she won her third RITA, and I got to see just how much it meant to her. Oh, and I got to know the lovely McIrish! Believe me, he is as perfect for her as he seems to be. I don't know what I did to deserve Kristan's friendship but I am forever grateful.
Omg, I got waaaaay too many books at #rwa2018 . And I was just there for the blogger day! I purchased A Duke by Default, Counting on a Countess, and Lady in Waiting at an event at The Tattered Cover and Hamilton's Battalion, The Duchess Deal, and Untamed Cowboy at the literacy signing, but the rest were all provided by publishers and authors. Full details can be seen in the haul post on my blog through the link in my bio. Where should I start?!
"One of these things is not like the other."
#RWA18 really tested my persistent Imposter Syndrome. There were moments when I thought I was where I was meant to be, and times when I thought "any minute now they're going to kick me out." 😂 It amazes me that I get to share space with people I admire so much and be considered something like a a peer. Amazes me. 💜
I was there at suz brockmann speech at #RWA2018 . I did see people leave, heard some hissing, and know of a death threat as a result of this speech. I choose to focus on the cheering, standing O, and joy. Love is love. The rest is powerless against it.
