Enjoying a piece of this Denver Chocolate Sheet Cake as I get ready to go to my first RWA Annual Conference this week. I’m excited to absorb all kinds of knowledge from some wonderful authors and publishing professionals as I put the finishing touches on my own manuscript. Also looking forward to meeting some online friends in real life! 😄📚🍰❤️
I made this cake in honor of the host city using a recipe from The NY Times Cooking section. The recipe originally appeared in the Denver Junior League Cookbook. I halved the recipe (because two people should probably not eat a whole sheet cake 😄) but kept the original amount of cocoa to give it a rich, dark flavor. I also omitted the nuts. Odd quirk about me: I love eating nuts on their own but loathe them in cakes, brownies, muffins, etc.
My oven broke yesterday morning right after I put two quiches, two tins of muffins, and a pan of homemade cinnamon rolls in to bake. And of course we had people over for a World Cup brunch, so everyone waited half-starved for an extra hour while I microwaved what I could and ran to the neighborhood grocery for store-bought breakfast food. I wound up making mimosas and drinking two while contemplating a third. Don’t judge me.
On Saturday I inadvertently committed a giant texting faux pas that resulted in me yelling “OH MY GOSH NOOOOO!” in my bathroom, immediately followed by me laughing uncontrollably on my bed from the sheer typical-ness (is that a word?) of it all. Bottom line: watch what you text, guys. And make sure you get names right. It could lead to rumors. And innuendo. And embarrassment. And your kids saying, “Can someone please take away her phone?” Some good news. I got my edits back yesterday, and my editor didn’t hate the book. In fact, she LIKED it! For me, winning her nod of approval is on par with the captain of the football team asking you to prom. It’s all hair twirling and smiling big and dancing around the bedroom singing Taylor Swift songs into your hairbrush microphone. Am I the only one who (still) does this? More good news. It’s finally RWA week. Which means it’s RITA week, and I’m so excited about all of it. Nervous, but excited. I get to see friends I haven’t seen in forever and spend the week talking writing and doing general book stuff. Nerdy maybe, but books are how I roll.
Hope it’s a great week for you, guys. Go spend it doing what you love. And be careful texting. It’s a dangerous world out there.

#Winsford - *THIS SATURDAY*
New Images Youth Centre is host to yet another #RWA wrestling show.
Come down to witness the stars of tomorrow in action. I’m sure it’s going to be action packed from start to finish. YOU SHOULD NOT MISS THIS!
🏊The Freestyle Stroke - easily the most popular kind of swimming stroke. The freestyle or crawl does give your entire body a proper aerobic workout.
🏊Resistance from the water causes your arms to get stronger as they push the water away and propel you forward.
🏊Your legs, in turn, need to kick and power that forward motion.
🏊Swimming freestyle uses your core, arms, neck, shoulders, chest, upper back, and legs. In other words, pretty much all joints and muscles are in play!
👉💡Of all the strokes, this one is most effective at toning your back muscles.
👉💡You stand to burn anywhere 330 calories per 30 mins of swimming the crawl or freestyle if you weigh around 57kg or 409 calories per 30 mins if you weigh 70kg.
