A little #MedalMonday post because this beauty deserves a little recognition.
A few months ago, I told my training partner Katie, if I finished this race it would be my biggest accomplishment of life. Yes, I graduated college, I married an amazing man and we’ve grown a beautiful family together. But this is different. 
I could’ve quit so many times. I wanted to. Every few miles, I kept rationalizing which number would be okay to stop at. My entire body ached. I basically just wanted to sit down and cry. Like, sob. But with some constant positive encouragement, I kept going. I pulled out these little mantras that made it feel a little easier.
It’s just a thing.
Pain is temporary.
Literally, one step at a time.
Sometimes, you just do things.
It seems so silly but, with Katie‘s help, this is how I got through the last 10 miles. Because of some pretty consistent Braxton Hicks, I wasn’t able to run more than a half mile at a time after mile 15. That means there was a ton of walking. That means, it took forever. 
I was literally the last person on the course. The course officials were in a pickup truck, creeping about 300ft behind me. Those poor people were kind enough to see me safely off the course, even though I was an hour past the cutoff. 
I know you’re thinking “what in the heck? Why did you keep going?” Because that’s what you do. 
You keep freaking going. 
The baby was okay, I was okay, so it was just one foot in front of the other until we were done. That shit sucked AND it was the most amazing thing ever at the same time. You runners out there know what I’m talking about. If you’ve ever thought about going for something crazy, DO IT. Why not? You’ll be surprised at your own strength.

I took all of last week off doing no physical activity (my sciatica hates me for this) until I got some answers to my dizziness, but mama ain’t raise no b*^{% and I just can’t stay off my feet for THAT long (doctors still running tests to figure it out) so we’re back at it. 🏃🏻‍♀️😌

Running isn’t about  my physical appearance, it’s about nourishing and building my mental strength. I visualize lifting limitations off myself so I can reach my goals. It’s about fueling my body with the right foods and more sleep so I can go further than before. I’m thankful for this body that can grow babies, run, climb, jump and push boundaries. I take advantage of my abilities for the people who can’t, for the people who would give anything to do even just one of those things. I plan on running until I can’t and I’ll be incredibly thankful for every minute of it. 🙌🏻

New achievement tonight! Have been running since December with @kalypo14 Was doing roughly a 10:30 mile for quite a few months, then managed around 10:15 for a couple months. Wasn't until this week that I was consistently at a 10min mile. We have just been focusing on increasing speed to build our legs and to warm-up this week. Tonight I did a mile in 9:38. I know my gym partner was even faster. So major kudos to us! #tbt to running the Chicago Marathon! On 10.11.15, I ran my second marathon in the windy city of Chicago 🏃🏻‍♀️ I had the desire to prove myself that I could run 26.2 miles yet again. It was a tough race, due to the warmer temps, but I managed to finish by focusing on one step at a time. Running marathons has taught me so much in life both on and off the pavement. It has taught me to develop a habit of commitment and perseverance. Training isn’t easy - especially during the summertime ☀️ and juggling a busy schedule on top of that makes it even more of a challenge. But every little bit of training and each little decision you make along the training journey matters in the end. And there is nothing like that feeling once you cross the finish line 🏁 Running marathons has also helped me cultivate a stronger mind because you force yourself to go further then your body might want to make you believe you can go 💪🏻 Ultimately, running has taught me mind > matter. When you are determined to accomplish a goal, you find a way to just do it.

This has been my motto this year, in running and in life, and I know it’s what made Sunday’s 1:25 goal a reality💪🏼 My speed was there, my endurance going in was questionable; but I went in feeling the most confident I ever have in my mental game and I know it’s what made the biggest difference🤗 HERE’S HOW IT ALL WENT DOWN👇🏼

Physically➡️ the goal was to start conservative and see how my body felt, and it started off so far so good...kind of fast #classicSteph 😬 but good. Mentally➡️ the goal was to turn my 🧠 off and keep my mind clear for as long as possible...until I really needed it...Which happened to be exactly at the half-way point😝 This is where I started to feel my legs and I made “it’s not about the legs it’s about the mind” my mantra until the turnaround point at 13km🔄 •

13-16km was definitely my favourite section of the course...I saw so many familiar faces on the out and back and I tried to absorb all the energy of everyone running past which gave me the HUGEST boost💥 •

Unfortunately, it was short lived🙈 and from 16-19km the race thinned out, it got quiet and it was by far my hardest section of the day...I could feel myself fading and everything felt heavy🐌 So I ignored my legs, stopped focusing on pace and focused on keeping the effort consistent. I only looked at my watch for the splits...which, when I realized despite how hard it felt were staying pretty consistent it brought me back to life💃🏼 •

From 19km onwards I was determined to empty the tank! I wanted to push it as hard as I could and know I’d left it all out there💪🏼 I honestly wasn’t even sure what time I would come in at since my watch was so far behind the course markers🤷🏼‍♀️ But I knew no matter what the clock said, that I’d run a really strong race and I was happy no matter what🎉 When I finally saw the clock with 100m to go and saw that I had hit my goal time I felt the tears start to flow and I totally ugly cried as I crossed that line😭 I was {and still am} so freaking happy☺️🙌🏼

4 miles and change after my first day not as a resident. The “real world” is kind of scary, but also exciting. I still have lots of room to grow as a person, and am definitely not done learning. Always important for me to move after work; it helps me feel grounded and focus on my priorities at home. ❤️

Two years ago....I keep looking at these pictures and I feel like it was just yesterday 😳 One of the best memories ever and one of my biggest accomplishments. Couldn’t and wouldn’t have done it without my bff and family💕 I remember when we had first started talking about it one day after one of our Saturday morning runs. We kept going back and forth in conversation trying to decide if we should commit to doing our first full marathon. I knew once she committed it was a done deal no backing out 🙄 So I committed too. This has been my motto this year, in running and in life, and I know it’s what made Sunday’s 1:25 goal a reality💪🏼 My speed was there, my endurance going in was questionable; but I went in feeling the most confident I ever have in my mental game and I know it’s what made the biggest difference🤗 HERE’S HOW IT ALL WENT DOWN👇🏼

Physically➡️ the goal was to start conservative and see how my body felt, and it started off so far so good...kind of fast #classicSteph 😬 but good. Mentally➡️ the goal was to turn my 🧠 off and keep my mind clear for as long as possible...until I really needed it...Which happened to be exactly at the half-way point😝 This is where I started to feel my legs and I made “it’s not about the legs it’s about the mind” my mantra until the turnaround point at 13km🔄 •

13-16km was definitely my favourite section of the course...I saw so many familiar faces on the out and back and I tried to absorb all the energy of everyone running past which gave me the HUGEST boost💥 •

Unfortunately, it was short lived🙈 and from 16-19km the race thinned out, it got quiet and it was by far my hardest section of the day...I could feel myself fading and everything felt heavy🐌 So I ignored my legs, stopped focusing on pace and focused on keeping the effort consistent. I only looked at my watch for the splits...which, when I realized despite how hard it felt were staying pretty consistent it brought me back to life💃🏼 •

From 19km onwards I was determined to empty the tank! I wanted to push it as hard as I could and know I’d left it all out there💪🏼 I honestly wasn’t even sure what time I would come in at since my watch was so far behind the course markers🤷🏼‍♀️ But I knew no matter what the clock said, that I’d run a really strong race and I was happy no matter what🎉 When I finally saw the clock with 100m to go and saw that I had hit my goal time I felt the tears start to flow and I totally ugly cried as I crossed that line😭 I was {and still am} so freaking happy☺️🙌🏼

Obvious #MedalMonday here today! So excited to finally do one of these😀! Dunno if anyone’s actually interested enough to read thru this, so here’re basically my own lessons learned, to note for upcoming races: 
1. PACK MORE FUEL. Newsflash: when you RACE-race 13.1 miles, your body will burn thru more sugar/carbs than when you just run an easy-paced, 13-mile long run!  Seems so obvious now, in hindsight, but man, I was kicking myself for ditching my extra chews and GU at bag-check!! It wasn’t muscle cramps or a challenging course that slowed me down — it was the lack of energy (aka sugars!) to maintain power and speed!!! .
2. BRING MY OWN HYDRATION. Just do it. I learned this a couple of marathons ago, when I found myself parched but with no aid station in sight, but the days before the #BAAHalfMarathon, I decided to ditch my hydration vest in order to “run lighter.” 🤦🏻‍♀️BIG MISTAKE. HUGE. Yesterday was unusually humid, hot, and sunny, and, while at this time of year in Boston, I can normally handle even 8-miles sans water, yesterday was not the day to do so!  By Mile 8, ppl around me were throwing up, and as I headed into Franklin Park Zoo at Mile 10, at least four ppl had fainted alongside the course.😳!!!

Somewhere under the glaring sun and uphills, I checked in with my body: 
Are my feet hurting? No. 
Are my legs cramping? No. 
Are my lungs burning? No. 
I was, quite simply, parched and dropping in blood sugars. .
At the Start, I paced myself at a “7” in effort.  But by the second half of the course, as the inclines continued on, no matter how loudly my mind shouted, I just couldn’t command any more energy out of my body to push. It wasn’t my training that failed me, it was my poor planning! .
All in all, 100% great effort put forth on a fairly challenging course (🙌🏼yay!)! 1:58:05. 
Racing and running is humbling, and maybe that’s why it is unappealing for some people. 
But if you let it, running will refine you, little by little, into becoming the best version of yourself. 
That’s why I will #keepshowingup, 
why I will #neverstopchasing 
and why I will #keeponrunning!

Well, we made it to the finish line! Training for my 50 miler has had many ups and downs. Ive thrown out my plan on multiple occasions. Two things I've learned this far: Im getting better at being flexible with training and I'm more determined than ever to make this a reality. There is a little girl who is counting on me to run this. For her. For us. I'll be damned if Im going to let her down.

Today I had planned on running 28 miles. When I woke up, my body said no. And I listened. At this point in the game, I have to stay healthy and rested. I have 20 plus years of running under my belt to provide a solid foundation. I did get in 12 good miles of running and 2 miles of walking in for a solid sunday. Learning to listen to your body is such an important thing in not only training but racing. .
I'm working on figuring out my schedule for the next 19 days and then, Im going to run with my heart and let my legs fly like the wind! .

I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to continue blogging - I was afraid people would poke fun at my blog/me blogging (which actually happened 👎🏻). In true Jessica fashion, I let my insecurities get the best of me. I recently had a change of heart, came to my senses, and have decided to continue to write about something that I love! To those that think it’s silly and aren’t supportive: ✌🏻 . Be vulnerable and do what you love, friends.

Just when I thought I was in the clear of that taper-cold, Chloe came home yesterday with a fever of 102!  I was up with her half the night bc her coughing was so bad, and of course, today, mama started coming down with something too!
.
As disappointed as I am to not be at 100% for tomorrow’s race, the reality is that I have a family, whom I’m so thankful for!  And I honestly can’t remember the last time I actually ran a race where I *wasn’t* sick or recovering from a sickness.🤷🏻‍♀️
.
And you know what? This doesn’t change my #1 or #2 Goals for tomorrow: 
1. to listen to my body. 
2. to be confident of every decision I make on the race course, whether to scale back or to push hard, and to finish the race with zero regrets!

As my Coach said, 
Take that pressure to perform off, 
and RUN FREE. 
To all my friends running tomorrow, LET’S DO THIS👊🏼👊🏼!!!

26.2 coming up for me in the morning... though my body may not be on my side for this one, my mind is... and thankfully the mind is a powerful thing. I've been dealing with a knee issue, which pretty much just put a halt on my training a few weeks ago. Between the knee and really not feeling like my body is ready, I'm mentally ready to give it my all! 
Our mind is an amazing and powerful thing... I'm staying positive, I'm visualizing myself flying through the course feeling great, I'm focusing on the fact that I am still able to run, plus the weather is looking great 😊 My heart and mind will be pulling me the whole way... plus a whole lotta carbs 😜

Today I took another step towards my goal of running a half marathon. I ran my third 5k, and I loved it. I didn’t have a running group or partner to run with, but I had my husband and mom to watch me go off in the wind and meet me at the finish line. 🧡 
What I have learned from this 5k? I am out of shape and I have a lot of work to do. I ran better in 2015 when I ran my first 5k. That is okay though because I can recognize where I need to put in the work. I witnessed so many people today who were at so many different fitness levels. I was just happy and proud that we were all out there making our lives healthier. 
Next 5k is in 47 days. As runners, we know that we gotta give our legs time to recover before we go pounding our feet on the streets again. I usually try to run 3-4 days a week and cross train the rest. To make sure this happened today, I packed me some non-running shoes to force me off my feet. And guess what? It worked! 😬
