Yesterday, to celebrate summer solstice, I woke up at 4AM to run up Ledgeview to watch a 0504 sunrise with @jennylena. The sun didn’t make much of an appearance as it rose behind clouds... but at least the sky above Mt Baker was gorgeous!
At 8pm, I headed up Elk mountain in the fog and mist with Jenny, @yota_ventures & @aryadogdog ... fully expecting that again we’d not see much sun or a sunset. At the first Lookout, it was so grey and cloudy, but we pushed on hoping for more.
And we got more! SO much more!!! Glimpses of blue sky, and a glow of sun behind us, and suddenly we were above the clouds, looking down, bathed in sunlight and the gorgeous colours of the sunset, surrounded by mountain peaks in a sea of clouds. It was so exhilarating and exciting and breathtaking!! I’ve never run above the clouds before, at least not to this extent, and what a GIFT it was!!!! I been sitting in a palliative care wellness summit all day talking about psychosocial health and wellness... and this is wellness... this is what MAKES us WELL!! Psychical, mental, emotional wellness!! Happy summer everyone! I hope your summer adventures not matter how big or small, bring greater health and wellness to you! 🍻 #celebrate#summersolstice#sunriserun#sunsetrun#abovetheclouds#summerdays#thelongestday#summeradventures#trailrunning
Last run in the Alps this morning. Tried to run the last 12 miles of the UTMB course but had to turn around because there was ice up high and I didn't have proper gear. Still a great run in a beautiful place. #trailrunning#runsteepgethigh
I’m one of those people who basically refuses to race until I know that I’m ready. I hate going out there & performing worse than I know I can.
Last night, I ran a 5K on the track at CU Boulder & ran a very sub-par time for myself. After half marathon training for the past few months, I’ve lost a lot of my speed & haven’t been training consistently the past couple weeks due to circumstances outside of my control. But ya know what? I still had so. Much. Fun. I met so many nice people, my coach got an award for still holding the 20 mile record in Colorado, they listed my name & my performance at Colfax under his accolades, and the atmosphere was just awesome. So, moral of the story: I need to chill the eff out sometimes & just enjoy this sport for everything it is: NOT just PRs and fast races, but the entire community. ☀️
I completed my third Multi-Grind Challenge event in support of BC Children's Hospital yesterday. I tried to keep my times under an hour, (Grinds 1-6) but they fell a bit over on Grinds 7-9. Grind 10 was my HAPPY PLACE! Finished #10 in 57:30 running to the timer at the top! I LOVE finishing strong!!! (Day's Stats: 8,530 meters (27,986 feet) climbed. Total Time 10:02:15. Average time 1:00:13. fastest Grind 55:07.)
Highlights included the comraderie of the other multigrinders, encouragement of strangers out doing a single Grind, perfect weather, witnessing some amazing athletes, seeing a priest in full black robe and a straw hat climbing the Grind (thought it was handy in case any of us died on the trail), Ray waiting at the car "aid station" for half the day, my amazing friend @kat.h.d joining me for Grinds 8 and 9, and Tanya hanging out a bit on Grind 10.
Thanks to my amazing friends for the encouragement and of course sponsorship/donations for BCCH.
Recap of summer solstice.
At 4:20am @annemariekathleenvw and I headed up and over to the beautiful viewpoint for sunrise. (pic # 5) it was coined the anticlimactic sunrise. Though beautiful the clouds sat on the mountains hiding the sun.
At 8pm @annemariekathleenvw @yota_ventures and @aryadogdog and I headed up Elk mountain. First finding clouds and fog, so thick it felt like a light rain in the forest. We were prepared to call this whole day the anticlimactic solstice.
Ooo but then we took the final ascent and popped right above the clouds to find blue sky, amazing mountain views, and a stunning sunset.
We went out, expecting no views. Instead we caught an incredibly memorable sunset with piles of shrills and laughter about the sunset dancing in front of us and clouds filling in the valley. It is a good reminder to just go, without promise of reward. Some days there are no views and Some days there are views you never could have even dreamed to ask for.
The next time you hear a distance runner say, “I’m never doing that race again”, I recommend making a wager, because you’ll probably win some money. Heading back to @nyeates1’s MD Heat Race 50K for the fourth time. This is my #fbf to last year’s race with female winner @thevibe777 and @dccapitalstriders President @rickamernick - such a fun day! #roadtocuyamaca100k#radrabbit#wearebttt#teambttt#SWAPteam#dccapitalstriders#50k
