HEADTORCH TIME | I gotta admit, every part of me didnt want to run this morning.. there's something about running in complete darkness at this time of year that has me completely on edge and makes me feel vulnerable.
Armed with my @uniliteuk headtorch and a couple of clip on lights, I braved the darkness(let's face it, if I don't do it.. I won't be running until next year 😂) and whilst that on edge feeling, nervousness never disappeared, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.
I'm gonna have to get used to it as we've got a couple of months of this now! 🤦
Anyone else have the pleasure of running in the dark? Anything that can be done to make me feel less anxious running in the dark?

I’m no expert and certainly no coach, but I’m fortunate to learn from a man who is. Based upon @thewelshrunner’s guidance, here are the main strategies that I deployed during Sunday’s Half Marathon. Maybe there’s something here that can help you too if you’re going for a time 🤷🏼♂️
> Race the mile that you’re in (or the kilometre if you’re like me). Don’t think about how long is left, don’t think about what’s coming up. Just concentrate on the mile you’re in and the pacing that you need for that mile. Tick them off one by one.
> Find your pacer. Not always possible, but if you can find somebody (or a group) that is running at or ever so slightly ahead of your required pace then tuck in behind. Let yourself lose focus on your own efforts and simply keep with these people that are inadvertently pacing you. Check out my splits in the photos above - it can really work.
> Believe. Yes, if you’re running at capacity then it’s going to start to hurt. This’ll probably come on midway through the race and that can be hard to fight given there’s a lot more running to be done, but, don’t let your pace slip here; believe you can do it and keep pumping those splits in.
> Dig deep at the end. As @little.runner.mel so perfectly put it to me, “Good pace or good face. Never both.” My photo collage here (swipe) proves that 😂. Every second counts and finishing with a strong sprint means you’ve got some energy left in the tank and therefore could have gone faster before this point. Use the last mile to hunt people in front of you down. Have zero left when you cross that finish line.
And now for my own pearls...
> Savour it afterwards. Take the silly photos, talk bollocks to strangers, be jubilant and not apologetic. Whether you’ve broken the world record or completed your first race; ran a PB or simply just got round. It’s your own victory and we never know when our running days will end. So savour it - these really are the days of our lives.
