Eleven years ago I adopted Ariel and we celebrate today as her 13th birthday.
I promised her since the day I saw those blue and brown eyes that I would try my hardest to give her the best life possible. It turns out she is the one that has actually done that for me.
Ariel has helped me break out of my shell. Through her I have discovered my love for adventure- for hiking, camping, paddling, and travel. She has helped me make friends who love the outdoors and dogs as much as I do. She has given me the courage to venture out by myself. She reminds me to seek happiness in the simple moments of every day life. And she quite honestly is the biggest part of what makes me, me.
My determination to fill her life with happiness and adventure, has in turn filled my own with countless memories that I cannot even begin to express my gratitude for. Eleven years of memories to be exact. While the fact that she is 13 now makes my eye swell up with tears... I’m not sure how the time flew by so fast, but I sure hope it slows down... I’m also so thankful for every single waking moment with her. I’m also thankful for the zillions of photos I have of her to look back at and remind myself that I’m fulfilling the promise I made to her all those years ago.
I prefer to measure my life in dog years, Ariel years, and Ariel’s year as a twelve year old was one for the books. It wasn’t without low points, but for those lows there were even bigger highs. From mountain top sunsets, to a sunrise on Mount Marcy after my ACL recovery, to traveling the United States and Canada- backpacking in the wilderness, swimming in alpine lakes and glacial water, summiting peaks across North America, exploring the coast, paddleboarding through canyons, and countless other memories made on that trip- to knocking off peaks in the northeast before and after her massive leg surgery, to camping in a lean-to for the first time, to being there the day Matt asked me to marry him, and to buying our first house. Ariel shared all of those moments with me.
She is my once in a lifetime dog, my heart dog, my everything, my Ariel.
Happy 13th Birthday, thank you for choosing me all those years ago and every day since.
I met Ariel when I was in college. We (friend & I) drove to Amber's house in need of nature's beauty. When I met Ariel , I instantly fell in love with her and pleaded to sit in the back of the car so I could snuggle her. She had spunk, the most beautiful presence and the best smooches around..and you know some things never change. Ariel is truly a special being, even Boone thinks so (and Boone is very particular)...and I want to wish her the Happiest of Birthdays..Love you Birthday twin 💙💙 .
