Happy Veterans Day! A little knowledge on this Medal of Honor recipient. Soon to go on our Toast to American Heroes Wall. Roy Benavidez was born in Texas August 5, 1935. This American is of Mexican and Yaqui Native American decent. In 1952, Benevidez enlisted into the military and in 1965 he was sent to Vietnam. There he stepped on a land mine during a patrol and was evacuated to the United States where he was told he would never walk again. Unable to accept this fate Benavidez would crawl out of bed at night using his chin and elbows. He would prop himself up against a wall and would attempt to exercise his toes, feet, ankles and legs. After a year of hospitalization Benavidez walked out of the hospital determined to return to service. In 1968, despite continued pain from his wounds he returned to Vietnam. On May 2, 1968 a twelve man Special Forces team was surrounded by a battalion of North Vietnamese infantry. Several attempts were made to extract the team but were unsuccessful. Benavidez heard the radio call for help, armed with a knife and medical bag, he boarded the fourth helicopter. This helicopter like the others before was unable to land. Benavidez however, jumped from the hovering helicopter and ran 75 meters under fire being hit several times. Once he arrived at the team he administered aid and began moving the members to the site of the fourth helicopter. Upon take off the helicopter was shot down. Benavidez made his way to the crash and established a perimeter of defense. He rendered aid again to the wounded. After six hours of fighting, the team was finally extracted. Benavidez recieved 37 separate wounds. He was declared dead and placed into a body bag. As the bag was being closed he mustered enough energy to spit alerting the doctor that he was alive. Benavidez would live until 1998 when he died at the age of 63. For his heroic and selfless actions this great American, Roy Benavidez was awarded the Medal of Honor. #nativeamerican #american #soldier #hero #army #moh #roybenavidez #warrior #war #us #vietnam #love #peace #texas #veteran #usa #veteransday #dog_robber #chad_reinhardt

Great book about Master Sergeant Roy Benavidez. If you're from Texas and don't know who this is, you should read about him. Thanks for the recommendation @misael13x #roybenavidez #greenberet #usarmy #texaslegend #tejano

This man was one hell of a #warrior and one hell of a #Texan. If you have never heard of this man, by all means, learn his story of family, faith, freedom and duty to his fellow man and #country.

The longer you look into the eyes of Roy Benavidez the more you realize that you are a huge pussy. This man is the epitome of a warrior and a true hero who put the life of his brothers above his own. If you are not familiar with his story do yourself a favor and look him up or get a copy of Legend by Eric Blehm. #legend #roybenavidez #greenberet #usarmy #vietnam #war #hero #usa #hardfuck #bigballs #medalofhonor
Damm! This guy was one giant piece of badass! Even when being armed with only a knife Roy Benavidez jumped from a helicopter into the deep shit battlefield to aid his brothers who were heavily surrounded by enemy Vietnamese soldiers, after constantly fighting for 6 HOURS he saved several men, but was seriously wounded after being bayoneted shot etc in battle. He was later carried in a body bag and had to spit in the doctors face to let him know that he was still alive. #Roybenavidez #Badass_history #Badass #Harcore #USarmy #Specialforces #Greenberet #Medalofhonor #vietnamwar #vietnamveteran #vietnam #sog #specialops #soldier #military hero

HOPE
Many many moons ago, the Army sent me on an awesome sea adventure. My return from Iraq in 2004 was on the USNS Benavidez, a large cargo ship named after Medal of Honor recipient MSG Roy P. Benavidez. It carried my Super Cargo team and 1/8th of the 101st ABN DIV equipment from Kuwait to Jacksonville, FL. Our job was to tend to the equipment during the journey to ensure a safe arrival to US soil.
We spent three weeks at sea with a 13-hour stop in Crete. This stop was a place where we were finally free to laugh, walk freely down a foreign street without our combat gear, eat delicious food, and just feel human again. It was a break on land in a safe place for us to truly feel alive. While wandering and exploring, I found this hand-woven tapestry at a store in the market. I kept it wrapped in the same paper from the store for years. I carried it through multiple moves and waited to give it to my child. It now hangs in the playroom.
Sterling loves it and every time I look at it, I remember. I remember that brief yet beautiful time in Crete. I remember those three weeks at sea. A time for reflection & gratitude while being carried safely home by the spirit of a heroic warrior. A sweet moment of bliss after our tumultuous year long deployment. I remember hope for the future.

In 1981, President Ronald Reagan presented Roy with the Medal of Honor. During the ceremony, President Reagan told those in attendance “If the story of his heroism were a movie script, you would not believe it.”

Roy Benavidez enlisted in the #Texas National Guard in 1952 during the Korean War and later switched to the regular Army. Roy was later sent to South Vietnam where he stepped on a land mine during a patrol and was told he would never walk again. After a year of excruciating practice, Roy walked out of the hospital determined to return to combat in #Vietnam. He returned to South Vietnam in 1968 despite his continuing pain

On May 2, 1968, a 12-man #specialforces patrol was surrounded by a North Vietnamese Army Battalion. Roy heard the radio call for help and boarded a helicopter to assist. Armed with only a knife and a medic bag, Roy jumped from the helicopter and rushed to help the patrol. After a series of valorous actions under constant fire to save at least eight of the men, Roy was evacuated, examined and pronounced to be dead
-
While a second doctor began zipping up his body bag, Roy managed to spit in the doctors face to alert him that he was alive
-
Roy had a total of 37 separate bullet, bayonet and shrapnel wounds from the previous six-hour fight. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1976
-
✳️ Roy message after he retired was simple: "An education is the key to success. Bad habits and bad company will ruin you

I don't think enough can be said about the character of MSG Roy P. Benavidez. Orphaned by the age of 7 and growing up working farms, enlisting in the Army and deploying to Vietnam, being told he would never walk again after stepping on a land mine, only to recover and become an Army Green Beret, and then make a solo movement to rescue a surrounded 12 man team despite numeroua injuries and severe blood loss, MSG Benavidez is the epitome of a warrior and a brother. His undying compassion for those he cares for, relentless tenacity and steel resolve are all qualities that should be envied by all, regardless of your occupation. #roybenavidez #greenberet #specialforces #vietnam #medalofhonor #usarmy #americanhero #inspiration #moto #setthestandard

I don't know how to model, but I do know that you can enter to win a Signed Copy of Legend by Eric Blehm! Better hurry though cause the contest ends in less than 2 days! Roy Benavidez is an absolute American hero, and Blehm tells his story, from childhood to the jungles of Vietnam, incredibly well. Head over to the site and check out my review. Contest entry is at the end!

A 12-man Special Forces team was inserted by helicopters in a dense jungle west of Loc Ninh, Vietnam, to gather intelligence about confirmed large scale enemy activity. Shortly after arriving, the team met heavy enemy resistance, and requested emergency extraction. Three helicopters attempted to extract them, but were unable to land due to intense small-arms and anti-aircraft fire.
Staff Sergeant Roy Benavidez was at the forward operating base in Loc Ninh, monitoring the operation by radio. Benavidez voluntarily boarded a returning aircraft to assist in another extraction attempt. Realizing that all the team members were either dead or wounded and unable to move to the pickup zone, he directed the aircraft to a nearby clearing where he jumped from the hovering helicopter, and ran approximately 75 meters under withering small-arms fire to the crippled team.
Prior to reaching the team’s position he was wounded in his right leg, face and head. He took charge, repositioning the team members and directing their fire to facilitate the landing of an extraction aircraft, and the loading of wounded and dead team members. He then threw smoke canisters to direct the aircraft to the team’s position. Despite his severe wounds and under intense enemy fire, he carried and dragged half of the wounded team members to the awaiting aircraft. He then provided protective fire by running alongside the aircraft as it moved to pick up the remaining team members.
As the enemy’s fire intensified, he hurried to recover the body and classified documents of the dead team leader. When he reached the leader’s body, Benavidez was severely wounded by small-arms fire in the abdomen and grenade fragments in his back.
Facing a rapid buildup of enemy opposition against his beleaguered team, Benavidez mustered his remaining strength, calling in tactical air strikes. Only then, in extremely serious condition from numerous wounds and loss of blood, did he allow himself to be pulled into the extraction aircraft. #IgRecon #GreenBerets #SpecialForces #Vietnam #MedalofHonor #CombatStories #WarStories
