#EcojusticeWishes : Today, we share our colleague Elaine’s holiday wish for the environment.
“I’m Elaine, an environmental engineer and Ecojustice’s healthy communities program director. And I care deeply about protecting people and the environment from harmful pesticides.
“The impact from pesticides is far-reaching. They make it into the air, water, and land that we all depend on.
“Like many Ecojustice supporters, I was deeply moved by Dewayne ‘Lee’ Johnson’s story. Dewayne is the former school groundskeeper who developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after repeated exposure to glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup. He subsequently took the chemical giant to court in California — and won.
“Dewayne’s courageous fight inspires my holiday wish for the environment — that Health Canada acts in the public interest when it comes to regulating harmful pesticides.
“A common issue surrounding the registration of pesticides in Canada is whether the federal regulator considers the proper science in its assessment process. In short, it has not. Thanks to supporters like you, we went to court over the unlawful registration of Thiamethoxam, a neonicotinoid pesticide that the federal regulator repeatedly approved for use in the absence of scientific evidence of its impact on pollinators.
“As we await the court’s decision, we are also petitioning Health Canada to re-consider its approval of glyphosate, a probable human carcinogen. At issue is the integrity of the science that Health Canada considered: Its decision was informed by scientific research that Monsanto had a secret hand in producing.
“Please, help Ecojustice continue to fight for the proper assessment and improved oversight of pesticides to ensure the environment and your health are protected.” Link in bio.

“We’re going to see for the first time evidence that nobody has seen before, evidence that has been in #Monsanto ’s files that we’ve obtained from lawyers and the people in Monsanto.” After opening arguments kicked off in #California state court on Monday for a #BayArea man’s landmark lawsuit alleging that Monsanto’s popular weedkiller #Roundup caused him to develop #cancer , a federal judge on Tuesday ruled that hundreds of unrelated but similar cases against the agrochemical company can also proceed to trial.
U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria in #SanFrancisco concluded that although he believes the evidence presented by attorneys representing the cancer patients and their families, “seems too equivocal to support any firm conclusion that #glyphosate ,” the active ingredient Roundup, causes in cancer, the matter should be taken up by a jury. As Reuters noted, his decision “followed years of litigation and weeks of hearings.” It also follows the first day of trial for DeWayne “Lee” Johnson’s suit in California’s San Francisco Superior Court. Johnson is a 46-year-old father of three who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma after years of working as a groundskeeper for school district, a position which regularly exposed him to a pair of Monsanto products containing glyphosate.
Although the state of California and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)—a branch of the #WorldHealthOrganization (WHO)—have classified glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen, U.S. and European regulators continue to defy scientists and anti-pesticide activists’ warnings by allowing farmers to keep spraying the world’s most common herbicide.
While Monsanto maintains that its products are safe—with a company attorney claiming in court on Monday that “scientific evidence is overwhelming that glyphosate-based products do not cause cancer”—some 4,000 plaintiffs have alleged that Monsanto’s glyphosate products such as Roundup have made them sick. However, Johnson’s case is the first to go trial.
"Breakfast With a Dose of Roundup?" You all remember the fear inducing headline that the EWG put out back in August. Well, I decided to do some math to determine exactly what amount of Cheerios a child or an adult would have to eat to reach the max acceptable daily intake of minimal concern according to the chart below, which would be 0.5 mg/kg for glyphosate.
So, the EWG claims that it found up to 530 ppb of glyphosate in the sample of Cheerios that was tested. That means that for every 1 kg of Cheerios there is 0.530 mg of glyphosate. The serving size for children under 4 is 21g (3/4 cup), so that would mean there is 0.011 mg of glyphosate per child serving of Cheerios. The max daily intake of glyphosate for a 30 lb (13.6 kg) child is 6.8 mg/day.
THIS WOULD MEAN A 30 LB CHILD UNDER AGE 4 WOULD HAVE TO EAT 610 SERVINGS PER DAY OR 458 CUPS OF CHEERIOS PER DAY TO REACH THE MAX ACCEPTABLE DAILY INTAKE OF GLYPHOSATE.
Even more ridiculous is the amount a 150 lb (68 kg) adult would have to eat to reach a max daily intake of glyphosate of 34 mg/day. An adult serving size is 28g (1 cup). So, there is only 0.015 mg glyphosate/serving.
SO, A 150 LB ADULT WOULD HAVE TO EAT 2291 CUPS PER DAY TO REACH THE MAX ACCEPTABLE DAILY INTAKE OF GLYPHOSATE.
This is the definition of #fearmongering . A catchy headline, some random, insignificant data that sounds scary, and a conclusion that doesn't mention the fact that you'd have to eat so much of the food tested that the actual food would kill you well before the #glyphosate would have any effect.
