Picked up this @jimbarrywines 2018 Watervale Riesling as part of my duties at the Royal Hobart Wine Show. It was opened at the Friday night public tasting & only had a taste poured out of it. I took it home, put it in my drinks fridge & promptly forgot about it. It’s been open for 5 weeks, waiting patiently for me to try it. Here we are. I wasn’t expecting much, however, man it’s nice. Fresh & citrusy like it was just opened. #clarevalley#riesling
Klaus-Peter Keller... Harvesting Riesling in Schubertslay. It’s not a particularly well-hidden secret that KP @kellerdalsheim is an inspiration when it comes to many things. Knowledge for sure but even more so passion and friendship. Others see this superstar in the wine world; I see a person full of warmth, humour and utterly kind generosity. And above all wit. It’s the many laughs I will always remember the most when I’ll become old man sitting on my porch and remembering the good old days. @antoniogalloni - Barolo and Champagne by all means but let me pour you some magic elixir harvested by this man from the Schubertslay (or Hipping, or Pettenthal, or Morstein, or Abtserde or....) and you will experience true perfection, in my humble opinion. 😊 Trying to wrap my mind around this unique experience. Harvesting with @julian.haart and @kellerdalsheim in the Schubertslay...PLEASE don’t wake me up! 🤓 @soilpimp @vomboden @undertwire @bedrockmorgan @russell_bevan @bevancellars .
The Schubertslay Adventure (Part III). The answer is...YES!!! It COULD be done. Although the last part must be climbed with one bucket at a time, otherwise you would simply slide helplessly down the ultra-steep vineyard and not come to a complete full stop until you dip your head in the Mosel river far, far down below. What an amazing vineyard this is, with 120 years old, ungrafted vines in one of the most beautiful wine regions in the world. Thank you @kellerdalsheim and @julian.haart for giving me a chance to take part in this adventure. I will remember it with a smile as long as I live. You do indeed have a job with many hardships but Oh Boy are you lucky to experience days like these and call it ”work”. It’s such an amazing lifestyle. I loved every single second of this magical experience. ❤️ As an epilogue, I can also report that I could hardly walk two days after the harvest, with aching muscles I didn’t even knew I had. 😛 .
The Schubertslay Adventure (Part II). Well, after that impressive display of me doing excercise with two full buckets, it was time for the next challenge... To get the grapes up to the car standing anove the Schubertslay vineyard, high, high above the Mosel river. KP @kellerdalsheim told me it’s going to be steep... He even mentioned it might be ultra-steep at some places. But no one told me it was going to be like climbing a WALL!!! One little misstep and you would be tumbling down towards the river and take half of Schubertslay with you. I’m just thinking of @undertwire and @bedrockmorgan and your harvest adventures in Sonoma... Would you like to come over here and give it a try? I know you love Riesling but you would love it even more if you knew the impossible hardship to bring even a bucket upp the sheer wall cliff up the slopes of the Schubertslay vineyard. Oh, did I say A bucket? You know, they told me...it couldn’t be done. Two buckets. At the same time. Simply impossible. No Man has done it before. It’s like the moon before Neil Armstrong took his first famous step on it - unchartered territory... Would it really be possible? Stay tuned... 😎 .
What happens when you put a sommelier of @mattdunnewine calibre together with a pretty sharp wine maker like Tom Ward you get a great wine of perspective and balance. Two views of the same style, bright , fresh , engaging a great wine for the warmer months a very smart little Riesling. Well done Matt and Tom may you create many more @wines.trotter #decantethis#riesling @solotel_group @swingingbridgewine @riedelaustralianz @gtwinemag @riffs_beards_beers @julian_rifkin @rieslingman
Blossoms and wet slate. Feinherb. Bit of SO2 blows off quickly. Concentration and silky smooth texture to burn...which seem to be the tell on the best 2017s. Cantzheim’s first vintage with the full array of vineyards purchased from Reinert...and a fantastic beginning! #saar#feinherb#riesling#cantzheim @delectable @flxtable @flxfrybird @theundergroundbottleshop #justatasteithaca#northsidewineandspirits @triphammerwines @kindredfare @brian445790 @pinnaclewine @hutchs1375 @temporestaurant @paradisewinebuffalo @farmerscreekside @brightonliquor @olivers_cuisine @dappergoose @putnamwinesaratoga @saltandchar @unterbiergarten @dappergoose @evillespirits @bagandstring @2_ames @premier_wines_op @premier_wines_amherst @artisanwineshop @marlborowine @wholefoodsbergennj @beekmanwine @gtownwine @elmawineliquor @avvino
So here is where the real aha moment! came for me in Napa. Tasting Charlie Smith‘s 2015 Smith-Madrone Riesling was a game changer for me. Spring Mountain not only makes great #riesling , but world-class wine that made number 12 in Stuart Pigott’s book “Best White Wine on Earth -the Riesling Story” of the top 20 Dry Riesling‘s IN THE WORLD. No surprise that the Alsatians are coming to check out his techniques and the Germans are shipping this wine home by the pallet. Wish I could do the same and put it down for 20 years. It is already showing petrol with its intense fruit and bright acid.
Riesling is the only #noblegrape that can still be had from iconic and historic makers at reasonable prices, say in comparison to Bordeaux, Bourgogne. That is not the reason to drink it, for sure. Drink it because it is awesome!
Brothers Stewart and Charlie Smith are true Napa Valley innovators who have been dry farming and making their own wines since the early ‘70s. They have been making #vinosdeautor since before that term was coined. Making their wines their way, with their own grapes only, no matter the trend, using timeless techniques to make elegant European styled wines.
Charlie, the winemaker is outspoken about his passion for classic wines made from #cabernetsauvignon and #riesling .
The vineyards sit high on Spring Mountain in St Helena and to no surprise, bring in award winning cabs year after year. The startler is their dry Riesling that surprises Alsaceans and has Germans shipping it home by the palette. The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon from one of the driest vintages on record produced smaller berries with deep concentrated flavors of boysenberry and plum with well integrated tannin and bright acidity that drink like a Left Bank Bordeaux.
I’m so grateful to Napa Valley wine academy for introducing me to these great outliers and stupendous winemakers.
