Arwen loves her chickens 🐔 She’s holding one of her Rhode Island Reds that she adopted from her class hatch. Out of the four she chose, two were pullets and two were cockerels. One of the boys passed away when he was still a young chick. The other one was a mix of some sort and was very aggressive. We had to humanely euthanize him, something I’ve never had to do before, but there was no way I could ethically rehome him knowing his behavior. I worked with him as much as I could but he was just mean 😤 Fortunately, the two pullets have turned out to be big, beautiful and perfectly gentle girls. So we are very happy. #rhodeislandredchickens#happyhealthyhens#bigbootychickens#redhens#adamsfamfarm#farmgirl#ilovemydaughter ❤️ #agirlandherchicken#farmlife
I had to set up something temporary for Miss Betty until we can build her a separate coop, Swooner pecked her eye out a couple days ago and her other one appeared injured too as she wouldnt open it. Well after a few days she is moving around again and finally eating and drinking. Her one eye is open and looks good but the other one is gone. The flock picked on her when i tried placing her back and she ran out of their shaking and terrified, she cant really see well yet and ran into logs in a fright. So now she will just have her own area/free ranging alone without the others. #bettyboop#petchicken#hens#rhodeislandredchickens

Yesterday was quite the sad day; we lost our young Rhode Island Red rooster to a suspected bird of prey. I found our Barred Rock roo deep in the woods surrounded by 3 piles of feathers in a state of extreme shock. I thought for sure he was dead since I could tell he was face down from a good distance away. As I got next to him he jumped up and wobbled away as if he had 6 too many and collapsed again. Been nursing him with electrolytes, and as of this morning tube-feeding him. He’s showing more alertness now but long road ahead of him.
Anjyu (named after a family member’s daughter) is our RIR hen and was Bilbo’s mate since hatchlings, so she is very distressed right now since they were inseparable. The BR hens are now attacking her so we’re trying to balance the time they are all spending together.

Obviously free-ranging them will have attacks like this from time to time but this happened within 2 minutes of me walking into the house from mowing part of the field. I’m just as shocked as they are - and while we plan for them to be food, you can’t help but get attached to them and feel sorry for how scared they all are right now. .
