ALLERGIES VS. INTOLERANCES

👩🏼‍🔬I’m often asked in clinic what’s the difference between an allergy and an Intolerance?
.
🤷🏼‍♀️Let me start by firstly pointing out it is normal that sometimes we experience discomfort when digesting some foods and there is a big difference between an allergy and intolerance.
.
INTOLERANCES
.
💚An intolerance is a digestive response which means it is not related to your immune system - these reactions can be physiological, pharmacological (food additives or natural parts of the food like sulphates) or functional (such as IBS). Symptoms of intolerances range from tummy pain, bloating, wind and/or diarrhoea or skin rashes and itching.
.
💚Intolerances come on slowly and can be related to the frequency of the food and the amount consumed but are not life threatening.
.
💚There are no reliable tests for intolerance with the exception of lactose. Most test kits out there test for IgG antibodies in the blood but this lacks clinical validity and may not be 100% accurate.
.
The best method to test for intolerances is via an elimination process preferably with a health professional.
.

💚An allergy is a direct response from your immune system, which basically means it recognises some foods as harmful and a threat. This results in IgE antibodies released and a life threatening condition known as anaphalatyic shock.

🥚If their survey is true that over 30% of people don't know how to make a nutritious meal, I do wonder if promoting ready-made breakfast is the way forward.
.
🤓There's no doubting there's a market for it. For those with obstacles preparing food, pre-made is such a convenient and effective of way of maintaining a nutritious diet and is a healthier choice than other grab and go items.
.
🤷🏼‍♀️However, knowing these single-serving pouches are on sale for £1.50, that's 50p more than a box of 10 Class A eggs, I want to make it another mission of mine to share just how easy it is to make a delicious breakie in no time at all.
.
🙈In fact, the pouches take 90 seconds to heat up whereas I think my scrambled eggs are done in less than 60!
.
🙋🏼‍♀️I promise you scrambled eggs are one of the most basic dishes but admittedly, it's easy to get wrong - so, are you really doing it right?
.
🙌🏻While everyone has their own favoured method, here's few things I’ve found to ensure they’re delicious every single time!
.
NOT WHISKING ENOUGH
.
It’s so easy to rush this step. Thorough whisking is crucial to getting soft, fluffy scrambled eggs.
.
USING HIGH HEAT
.
You run the risk overcooking or burning the eggs when using high heat. Patience is key, eggs need to be cooked low and slow.
.
USING WRONG PAN
.
If you’re cooking up 2 or 3 eggs, there’s no need to use a huge pan which increases the chances of overcooking. Stick with a smaller pan.
.
LEAVING EGGS ON HEAT FOR TOO LONG
.
You’ll find them dry and rubbery! Try removing the pan from the heat when the eggs are still soft as residual heat will continue to cook them until they're the consistency you love best!
.

All the good stuff in this bowl 😋
Base of the bowl is made from flash frying Mushrooms 🍄, Courgette 🥒 and Carrot 🥕 with some Garlic Salt and Black Pepper.
The Kale Chips 🌱 were made by mixing together Kale with Lemon Juice, Sea Salt, Black Pepper and Nutritional Yeast, massaging everything until well coated. Then I popped them on a baking tray and cooked in a hot oven until crispy (mine took about 6mins).
On top I just added some fresh Tomatoes 🍅 and some @tofooco Tofu that I marinated in some Hoisin Sauce 😊

A high carb breakfast this morning, with this warm bowl of millet and oat porridge. Topped with hemp, flax, banana and of course @pipandnut almond butter. 🤓Brain fuel for a lot of very important work to get done today, then off to class to dance my heart out. Not only is it a stress relieving activity but it also helps me to reconnect with myself. .

👍🏻Save the recipe for these gems from my book #ReNourish are great for afternoon snacks or even breakfast.

👌🏻hey contain healthy fats and protein, helping us feel satisfied for longer, plus you also have the option of using wholemeal flour for some additional fibre and nutrients.
.
👩🏼‍🍳INGREDIENTS (Serves 12)
.
✔️4 tbsp olive oil
✔️1 red pepper, diced
✔️1 tbsp pumpkin seeds, extra for topping
✔️1 tbsp sunflower seeds, extra for topping
✔️200ml milk of choice
✔️1 egg
✔️300g wholemeal self-raising flour
✔️1 tsp paprika
✔️½ tsp salt
✔️pinch of black pepper
✔️handful of chopped coriander (optional)
✔️20g Cheddar cheese, grated (optional)
✔️butter, to finish (optional)

RECIPE
.
1️⃣Preheat the oven to 180°C fan and line a 12-hole shallow muffin tray with cupcake cases.
2️⃣Warm 1 tablespoon of the olive oil in a frying pan over a medium heat, and sauté the diced pepper for 3–4 minutes.
3️⃣Add the seeds to the pan and toast for a final minute, stirring often.
4️⃣Meanwhile, put the milk, remaining olive oil and egg into a bowl and beat together with a fork or small whisk. In a second bowl combine the flour, paprika, salt and pepper and coriander and cheese, if using.
5️⃣When the peppers are cooked, tip them into the egg mix, stirring to distribute them. Gently fold in the flour mixture, taking care not to overwork the mixture. The batter should be fairly stiff.
6️⃣Using two spoons as scoops, divide the muffin batter evenly among the cupcake cakes. Sprinkle with a few extra seeds, then bake in the oven for 15–18 minutes until browned on top and a skewer comes out clean.
7️⃣Add an optional teaspoon of butter to the top of each warm muffin and sprinkle with cheese and seeds. Transfer to a wire rack and allow them to cool slightly before eating

🇨🇳Dating back to ancient Chinese medicine, Face Mapping suggests where you’re breaking out is a reflection of what’s going on in your body.

💁🏼‍♀️While this may be true in part, to suggest that specific foods contributes to blemishes in only parts of our face is wrong - it's pseudoscientific!
.
💄However, a supposed Celebrity make up artists' article in a new glossy magazine says otherwise in which she suggests;
.
FOREHEAD
.
🥩Forehead "spots can indicate an over-consumption of red meat. Try doing a bit of a detox, cutting out meat" she says.
.
👱🏼‍♀️In reality, hair styling products or a fringe is more likely to contribute as irritation can easily lead to break-outs. It's even got a scientific term 'acne mechanica', meat-induced acne does not!
.
CHEEKS
.
"Spots on the cheeks might be the result of too much sugar" she says.
.
🍭Again, there's no evidence that sugar materialises itself in spots on your cheeks. There's no doubting sugar may contribute to poorer skin but not isolated to your cheeks.
.
📲Think about what happens when placing your phone against your cheek - the heat and bacteria together may well activate your oil-producing glands so keep it clean!
.
CHIN
.
🍪"Spots on the jawline... caused by heavily processed foods, from ready meals to biscuits" she says.
.
🌭Much like cheeks, there's no science to back up any claims a ready meal appears on your chin the day after.
.
📆In fact, acne affecting the lower half of the face is linked to hormonal changes - it's far more likely to suggest that time of the month.
.
THE BOTTOM LINE
.
🥑What you eat can have a big impact on your skin health but to think specific foods contribute to spots in certain areas is not scientific. It's ancient wisdom that hasn't made it into modern day medicine I'm afraid!
.
🌈However a diet rich in colour and variety is your best bet for good skin and there are many foods that will certainly help you in your search for a glowing complexion.
.

FOREHEAD . 🥩Forehead "spots can indicate an over-consumption of red meat. Try doing a bit of a detox, cutting out meat" she says. . 👱🏼‍♀️In reality, hair styling products or a fringe is more likely to contribute as irritation can easily lead to break-outs. It's even got a scientific term 'acne mechanica', meat-induced acne does not! . CHEEKS . "Spots on the cheeks might be the result of too much sugar" she says. . 🍭Again, there's no evidence that sugar materialises itself in spots on your cheeks. 📚But if you read the research (like I have to do! 🤓) from which all the sensationalist headlines are based upon, they all actually tend to report similar things

🎲Most contradictory findings on carbs for example come from 2 large observational studies. PURE (136,000 from 18 countries, 2017) and ARIC (15,000 in US for 25 years, 2018)
.
🤷🏼‍♀Headlines for the PURE study said low-carb with more fat led to longer and healthier life. Yet that's contradicted by ARIC study which led to last month's headlines saying low-carb could reduce your life expectancy by 5 years
.
🧐Whereas in truth, these supposed contradictory studies had very similar results, they both found that getting around half of your energy from carbs is associated with lowest risk of dying early not dissimilar to the guideline recommendation @PublicHealthEngland
.
🍠🥕🌽Remember, fruit and vegetables both contain carbohydrate so there's absolutely no reason to leave carbs off your plate!

👋🏻Both studies suggest a sweet spot of about 50% of energy from carbs where risk of dying was lowest. Anything more or less was comes with increased risk of premature death. Seems that moderation is key not just with carbs but fat too

🏃🏼‍♀️I absolutely love exercise, it always improves my mood! I think I'm a naturally happy person anyway but maybe that's because I work out - who knows!

🧠 What's really interesting is that working out produces changes in the parts of the brain that regulate stress and anxiety. It can also increase brain sensitivity for serotonin and endorphins before are known to help produce positive feelings! 🖤Also, exercise has always shown to reduce symptoms in people suffering from anxiety. I think it really helps me become more aware of my mental state.

💁🏼‍♀️Interestingly, the research I've studied suggests your mood can benefit no matter the intensity of the physical activity. Remember, exercise is defined as any movement that makes your muscles work, so that's swimming, running, jogging, walking and even dancing!
.
🙌🏻Today I begin the 65 hours worth of e-learning I have to complete as part of my journey to qualify as a Level 3 PT.I can't wait to start my personal training course @No1Fitnesseducation @No1_Fitness so I can share more qualified advice about how food and fitness can influence us becoming happier, healthier than ever before!

POLLUTION AT HOME

Air pollution is a hot topic and I had no idea that our homes can actually be more polluted than the city’s streets. It's thought provoking given we spend on average 90% of our time indoors
.
The list of common pollutants makes for interesting reading: benzene (from cigarettes and scented candles); trichloroethylene (from paints); nitrogen dioxide (emitted by gas hobs, and car emissions) and other compounds (given off by new carpets, and cleaning products).
.
Living on a main road means that for my flat anyway, a significant level of air pollution indoors is due to outdoor pollution penetrating through. And as a country girl at heart, I'm particularly sensitive.
.
So, with this unusually wonderful weather and a new found respect for my home environment, I'm achieving two things at once with @Dyson 2 in1 air purifier and cooling fan which removes 99.95% of allergens and pollutants.
.
Now, I can focus on studying and learning more about how to keep you guys informed when it comes to nutrition without worrying about London's pollution bringing me down!

Cook the Jackfruit straight from the package with a little extra Tomato Sauce, water and 1 tin of Borlotti Beans. Cook down until the mixture has reduced and is deliciously sticky and rich.

SOME FOODS ARE BAD FOODS!

😤Yesterday, I walked past a number of diet posters in front of a school and old people’s home, so frustrating to see!

👎🏻A lot of the diet industry just fuels feelings of guilt and shame, it’s no wonder we have an obesity problem and a rise in eating disorders!
.
🙄Naming certain foods as 'syns' just colludes with an unhealthy anxiety that prevails around food all too often.
.
🤓In vilifying products and brands we are attempting to classify foods as either good or bad, and in doing so we are damaging our relationship with what we eat.
.
✋🏻For those lucky enough to have never strayed into eating disorders or struggled with their weight may not see it this way but for the ones who are supposed to benefit most from these particular systems, those who eat too much or not enough, labelling foods is a negative and guilt-ridden idea.
.
👍🏻We should encourage positive messages surrounding what we can and should eat, not what we can't and shouldn't eat.
.
🥗An obsession over which foods are good and bad is an impossible, rule-driven way of eating that is familiar to so many eating disordered people, a behaviour that I see in my @Rhitrition clinic every single day.

🍔Diet culture is seen everywhere from restaurant menus to supermarkets and I believe that if perceive what we eat as good or bad, it is often an extension of how we perceive ourselves.

🤓That's what's advised from food to medicine but how many of you actually listen? Well, research last week @NUIGalway suggests;

🕺🏼Just 37% of men say they read nutrition labels and 35% say they never do!

🤷🏻‍♂80% of people struggle to understand whether a food was high or low in sugar or fat.
.
🤦🏼‍♀Worryingly, 40% of those with life-threatening heart disease don't bother to check labels.
.
🙌🏻What's interesting is that only 5% of women say they don't read labels which is amazing ladies - It's the men we need to sort out! Tag your fellas haha!

😳The answer why so many ignore labels is actually quite simple - the information is difficult to understand.
.
🚦Thankfully, we are more able to understand the simple traffic light system in which green, amber and red colours signify healthy and unhealthy levels, yet you really should be more aware of what the NHS advice is on high and low levels of certain things.
.
👍🏻I've shared some basic guidelines but what would be really useful is if you can tell me how you think nutrition should be better labelled on packaging? Together we can hopefully campaign and make a change for the better!

High: more than 22.5g of total sugars per 100g 
Low: 5g of total sugars or less per 100g
An adult's RDA of labeled sugars is 90g and 30g of free sugars (cubes).

Why have I only just started using Xanthan Gum? 😍😍😍 This right here is my Protein Mousse and it is AMAZING - It tastes like raw cake batter that you would always lick from the bowl before a cake went in the oven 😊
Ingredients:
- 200ml Almond Milk
- Big handful of Ice
- @myproteinuk Toffee Flavdrops
- Pinch of Sea Salt - 30g Vegan Protein Powder
- 5g Xanthan Gum
Add everything to a high powered blender and blitz until combined. That's it! 
I topped mine with Banana and @profusionorganic Hemp Peanut Butter ( 🤤🥄) .

📱If social media is a magnifying glass into life, then we are absolutely obsessed with what we put in our mouths!

🤪I don't know about you but I'm bombarded as soon as I reach for my phone in the morning.

👎🏻The flipside of all this curiosity in what we eat is that interest can quickly become judgement.

🙄I bet you've seen a raised eyebrow at work when you’re tucking into your lunch. Maybe your own eye-rolling about your best friend's smoothie bowl Instagram pic?
.
👀We’re in danger of going beyond the curious and social media isn't helping. We don't just follow our friends - we follow professional food stylists (yes, it’s a real job!), restaurants, chefs and our view of food is being skewed towards the unattainable idea of enjoying perfect meals every single day!
.
😳It's also changing the way bars and restaurants look - they need to have the right lighting for food and selfies, with the right surfaces for appealing backdrops. They need to have “Instagrammable moments” I was told this week by an interior designer client of mine!
.
🤭And when we share our own food, I think we all share a little bit of ourselves - our likes, our culture, maybe even our bank balance?
.
💡I think social media started with a hope that we can share a connection with our content - but from experiences this week @Rhitrition clinic, it doesn’t always happen and there’s a vulnerability in that.
.
✋🏻Judging what someone eats, making them second guess what they should and shouldn’t eat can have a hugely negative impact on our relationship with food.
.
😔The promotion of any ideal is unhealthy and as a Nutritionist I have a responsibility to share that what’s works for me, may not work for you.
.
🤓So I'm sorry but I will never share What I Eat In A Day videos because it only perpetuates a belief that one size fits all - and that’s just not my philosophy!

RASPBROWNIE BITES

🗒YOU NEED
200g 85% Dark Chocolate
2 Eggs (chia seeds for vegans)
3 tbs. honey 
3.tbs heaped plain or whole meal flour
Handful of fresh raspberries
50g grassfed butter or coconut oil
.
👩🏼‍🍳RECIPE
1⃣Melt in a saucepan your butter and chocolate 
2⃣Add the honey (add extra if you like them really sweet) and eggs
3⃣Stir well and fold in the flour
4⃣Remove from heat and pour into a non stick backing tray
5⃣Add your raspberries and llace in a preheated 180c oven for 15-20 minutes!

🤗I want to remind you that we are all genetically wired to seek pleasure but with so much diet culture surrounding us, pleasure and hunger gets a bad rap and I don't like it!

The juiciest apple in the world won't bring you pleasure if you're hungry for a warm, filling meal. 🍇I asked, and you named them (on my stories last night)! Chocolate brownie raspberry bites! I must do that more often, so much fun developing recipes with you guys.

🥂As a Nutritionist advocating balance, of course I bought a bottle but for a dinner party, I wanted to bring a little something else!

🤗They go down a treat so hit save and make the recipe this weekend!

🗒YOU NEED
200g 85% Dark Chocolate
2 Eggs (chia seeds for vegans)
3 tbs. honey 
3.tbs heaped plain or whole meal flour
Handful of fresh raspberries
50g grassfed butter or coconut oil
.
👩🏼‍🍳RECIPE
1⃣Melt in a saucepan your butter and chocolate 
2⃣Add the honey (add extra if you like them really sweet) and eggs
3⃣Stir well and fold in the flour
4⃣Remove from heat and pour into a non stick backing tray
5⃣Add your raspberries and llace in a preheated 180c oven for 15-20 minutes!

No such independent studies exist! In the small print, even their own researchers say it "may be best used on a cautious basis" this is actually quite common to have sponsored studies.

🤓Importantly, the drug does not have a European licence. In the UK, it would have to be approved by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) before it could be prescribed.

👊🏻The NHS shares the previous opinion of the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) suggesting "although a modest benefit in terms of weight loss was seen... the Committee was concerned about the potential risk of tumours... the risk of psychiatric disorders (such as depression) and valvulopathy (problems with heart valves).

🚫Therefore... the CHMP was of the opinion that the benefits of Belviq did not outweigh its risks."

In fact canning preserves most of a food's nutrients. Protein, carbs and fat are unaffected by the process. Most minerals and fat-soluble vitamins like vitamins A, D, E & K are also retained

Some claim they contain harmful ingredients and should be avoided, yet virtually any food is found in a can today! .
But, if you're trying for a baby or pregnant, have no more than 4 cans of tuna a week as there’s higher levels of mercury than other fish. If you’re breastfeeding there’s no limit on how much.

Canned foods are a convenient and practical way to add more nutrient-dense foods to your diet. Since they can be stored safely for years and often involve minimal prep time, they're incredibly convenient, they cost less than fresh products too!

SOME NUTS ARE HEALTHIER THAN OTHERS

🥜Nuts are very good for you. While they’re high in fat, in most cases, it's healthy. They're also a good source of fibre and protein

There is no one nut that reigns supreme. As with veg, I would enjoy a wide variety!

A few examples; Walnuts are great source of Omega-3, Brazil nuts are excellent source of Selenium and Peanuts are high levels in Vitamin E

CHOCOLATE IS UNHEALTHY

🍫Unfortunately, chocolate isn't loaded with nutrients but actual dark chocolate can actually positively affect health

if you get the good stuff that's like 80%+ it'll have a variety of powerful antioxidants, in fact more than most other foods

Research suggests that dark chocolate (not the sugary type) can improve health and lower risk of some chronic conditions
