I don't love silicone 😕, but I use it. Reasons I don't love it: it's completely non-recyclable here in Australia 😳, and if things aren't recyclable I try to avoid them. I'm also not 100% confident of its safety. That said, unlike plastic it does seem to last a long time 👍, and it is resistant to heat (it doesn't melt or degrade). Plus it helps seal things. I have a reusable container and water bottles with silicone seals, and I have a small amount of silicone bakeware. I have cupcake cases, and also this loaf dish. It helps eliminate the need for baking paper. Living with less waste is all about compromise.✅ Sometimes I use silicone, and don't need the baking paper. Other times I use metal (safe and recyclable) but I line with paper (which I reuse but ultimately ends up in the compost) - I cannot bear it when my baking sticks to the side of the tin 😖, and greasing is just not as effective in my world. I don't know which is better - I think that depends on the question. Both work in some ways but not others. And I have no current plans to give up baking, so I use what works for me.✅

Fun fact: this arbor installation was created using no floral foam! Instead of floral foam (which is single-use) I opted for all reusable materials for the mechanics behind this design. This has become my new favorite way to decorate arbors, signage, and even to create centerpieces in a more environmentally friendly way!
I’ve never been great with flowers. The typical bouquet is far too fancy for my taste, and I hate how they end up in the bin so quickly. Thanks to @posyandposy I’ve grown to love the beauty of a carefully picked bouquet. The flowers they send are wild and simple, as though I plucked them on a walk 💐
I've learned a few ways to prolong the life of your bouquet to get the most out of your flowers. Foliage like wild grass last an age when dried and displayed on bookshelves and in vases. Flowers can be pressed; sprigs can be tied to gifts; mini posies can be made; flowers can be gifted to guests, and eucalyptus can be hung in the shower. Even the brown paper can be folded up and stored away for last-minute gift wrapping.
I’ve now lost count of the number of times people have shared ‘that eco brick’ link with me (thanks for thinking of me!). If you haven’t seen it yet here’s a summary - a lady called Rebecca Evans has posted this picture on Facebook and given a rave review of the Eco Brick system which has gone viral and crashed the Eco Brick website. For those of you unfamiliar with Eco Bricks, they’re a great idea. For well tuned, established Zero wasters, they provide an opportunity to store away totally unrecyclable waste. You basically use a plastic bottle and stuff it with waste. For these ‘well tuned zero wasters’ we’re talking a bottle/brick per year (I assume they get the bottle from a friend 😐). The ‘bricks’ are then used to build things - garden furniture, walls and so forth. There are some really wonderful examples of them being used in developing countries.
In the UK, in the hands of hard-core zero wasters with a plan of how they want to use them, they’re a fabulous idea. My concern, is that people will use them as a solution. They are not a solution. The tag line for Eco Bricks is ‘plastics solved’. This worries me too because I’m not sure they do ‘solve’ the problem. I have visions of people breathing a sigh of relief that they don’t have to worry about all those crisp packets, sweet wrappers or fruit and veg bags. The truth is we do need to worry, and we should. Let’s continue to say no to single use plastic (not ‘ooh yes please I can stick it in my eco brick’!). See you @harboroughmarket tomorrow morning folks.

New research has shown, microplastics are now making their way into another staple we consume: salt. Over 90% of table salt tested was found to contain microplastics. If we don't change our plastic bad habits we will soon have to factor in how much plastic we are consuming in our diets 🙅 #breakfreefromplastic#plasticsalt
