Years ago I learned that a sandbag on my sternum helped calm my pounding heart. Today *touch wood* much of my anxiety has ceased. But the sandbag is still tremendously comforting, like acupressure for my chest. 🌻

Vayu Mudra: "With greater lightness of being, I open my heart to embrace life completely". (repeat this mantra 3 x to yourself). Vayu means 'wind' and is the name of the air element, whose qualities include lightness, mobility, gracefulness and sensitivity.  To cultivate more openness and lightness, follow this meditation.

Begin by sitting comfortably and holding your index finger gently folded over by your thumb (as pictured). Allow the breath to flow into your upper chest, throat, neck, face and head.  Take several breaths and feel expansion and rising breath which will help you to cultivate greater clarity and openness.

To enhance your sense of lightness and ease, visualize yourself embarking on a journey.  Your trail is framed by wild flowers and tall trees, you feel the fresh air on your face.  The sky is bright blue and crystal clear and in the distance tall mountain stretch across the horizon endlessly.

As you breath more freely, you become sensitive to your surroundings, your connection to the natural world deepens, and you sense your breathing as a natural giving and receiving, an ongoing conversation with the entire web of creation.

As you continue on your journey, the air becomes light ,fresh and clear, a soft breeze invites you to sit and take in the scenery; a landscape of valleys, farms and fields and in the distance white capped mountain peaks.

In this absolute clear atmosphere, your sensitivity is increased, and with each breath you natural experience greater lightness of being.

As lightness permeates your being, your heart opens naturally, allowing you to embrace yourself, your  life and all beings with greater lightness and ease.

Vrijdagavond 21 september: diepe ontspanningsyoga (restorative yoga). Ontspannen en opladen in vooral liggende houdingen waarbij we gebruik maken van veel props als bolsters, kussens en dekens. Ontzettend fijn voor iedereen die behoefte heeft aan extra ontspanning, zich in een herstelfase bevindt of een gevoel van ontspanning wil terugvinden.

Zaterdagmiddag 22 september: @jeroen_van_der_lee komt een hele leuke les zenboksen geven. Een combinatie van (kick)boksen en yin yoga. Naar buiten en naar binnen gerichte energie komen samen. Kom het ervaren!

Zaterdag 29 september: @vos.irene komt een workshop critical alignment yoga geven voor onder- en bovenrug. Hierbij wordt gewerkt met een speciale strip en boogje om dieper gelegen spanning te bereiken en los te laten. Aanrader! Er zijn een paar extra plekken toegevoegd vanwege de belangstelling, maar hierna is vol echt vol.

Mods: try a restorative half-frog! Lie on your stomach, slide one leg up to hip height, knee at 90 degrees  if available. Cactus the arm on same side 90 degrees. Gaze at the bent arm and rest the cheek on the mat. Pad under the knee and elbow with blankets and let the hip and chest passively stretch. *manduka = frog, asana = pose, aka #frogpose

Bugünkü pratiğimde yanlar üzerinde yoğunlaştım, bu derin esnemeden çıkarken, vücudum ilk tarafı çalıştıktan sonra o denli dengesizleşmişti ki ayağa kalkmakta oldukça zorlandım, neredeyse kıpırdayamadım. “Yan”larımdan biri yok olmuş gibiydi. Kalan yan üzerinde de çalıştıktan sonra tarif edilmez bir denge ve özgürlük hissi de beraberinde geldi. Yanları olmayan, bütüncül bir hissiyat kapladı içimi.
Not: Ben sağda ve solda 5’er dakika kaldım. Pozu derinleştirmek için, ayağınıza ufak bir kum torbası vb. ağırlık koyabilirsiniz. The world sure does like to test us doesn't it?
For 3 weeks now, I've been prioritising work and my body has been suffering. Teaching endlessly is hard on a body, constantly demonstrating, takes it's toll.

For weeks now, I've been meaning to attend @emmapeelyoga's class. Everything always got in the way, and being the workaholic I am, and the training I got while being a chef, I said yes to the world and no to me.
▪️
Until today, tonight was my night. I was determined, I would get my yin on. And then I was asked to work, and I actually said no. And the person I said no to, acted like a dick* towards me because of my decision, and I wanted to take back my decision, but I didn't waver, I prioritised my self care. ▪️
And good lord was it worth it, my body feels free again. I feel like I could purr, my body feels that content. ▪️

It's the middle of the week and almost the end of the #thisismybraveyogis challenge. Funny how today's topic fit right in with my day and a lot of what I've been re-analyzing lately. Self care is vital to our well being! There are some people who hear those words and automatically go to a place of "that's so selfish though" I can assure you that it is absolutely neccessary to take time for yourself, if you are not taking care of yourself you have no place taking care of others. Today I took a self care day. I lounged around, watched funny movies, cuddled with my cat and did my top priority of the day which was wash and twist out my hair. In the last couple of weeks I let it be free and wild with no styling products but today it was time to give it some control and protection again. I feel so refreshed! (I know that sounds odd to most of you but if you've got curly hair I know you get what I'm talking about) For tonight's restorative yoga I enjoyed being fresh out of the shower with my pajamas on, it was all about relaxing. I may just end my night with a nice cup of tea too. So as you can see there are many methods of self-care. Do what makes you feel at ease and refreshed! When you take care of you then you can give love and support to others.

It's the middle of the week and almost the end of the #thisismybraveyogis  challenge. Funny how today's topic fit right in with my day and a lot of what I've been re-analyzing lately. Self care is vital to our well being! There are some people who hear those words and automatically go to a place of "that's so selfish though" I can assure you that it is absolutely neccessary to take time for yourself, if you are not taking care of yourself you have no place taking care of others. Today I took a self care day. I lounged around, watched funny movies, cuddled with my cat and did my top priority of the day which was wash and twist out my hair. In the last couple of weeks I let it be free and wild with no styling products but today it was time to give it some control and protection again. I feel so refreshed! (I know that sounds odd to most of you but if you've got curly hair I know you get what I'm talking about) For tonight's restorative yoga I enjoyed being fresh out of the shower with my pajamas on, it was all about relaxing. I may just end my night with a nice cup of tea too. So as you can see there are many methods of self-care. Do what makes you feel at ease and refreshed! My dad posted this to my FB wall the other day and it struck me ... it struck me right in the kisser that I’ve changed so much between my yoga and meditation practice and my sobriety that one day I DID wake up different. 🦋
I used to be purposely indecisive, always afraid I’d make the wrong decision or disappoint someone. I used to walk the middle of the road afraid to offend someone if I didn’t pay them mind or that “they” wouldn’t like me if I didn’t act like “they” did. 🦋
And so many more.  Until one day my head became clear... and it stayed clear. I put down the bottle (or box) that was keeping me in the fog, saw with clarity and felt a new aliveness in my body. 🦋
Then I attended my first yoga class, a Restorative class with plenty of time for meditation. I wasn’t really sure what exactly I was supposed to be doing all flopped over a bolster and falling asleep, but something...SOMEthing spoke to me in those 75 minutes. 🦋
That Something has helped me find my way through the fog that tried to block my clarity on many occasions.  That Something helped me to see Life, and those who passed through mine ,in a different way, looking beyond the outward appearance and looking for their light. 🦋
That Something, that clear beautiful Something helped me realize that the only person I truly need to make - and keep- happy is mySelf, that the road I walk is filled with many but ultimately my road is for me.  That Something illuminated that life is too short to work and not Live, and while I need to work, it should not become my Life, it should be one of many parts of the Whole that makes up my Life. 🦋
It showed me that Love, a lasting Love, is nothing to be rushed into or forced, but something that happens in its own time and with whomever it is truly meant to, not necessarily with whom we want or whenever is convenient for us. 🦋
Oh yes. I woke up different. And I woke up with happiness and joy and clarity and love.  It’s a feeling that no alcohol or drug can replicate. It is Bliss.

When I first started teaching yoga in 2001, I had read about professional athletes around the country practicing yoga...one of my favorite yoga teachers, Baron Baptiste, had worked with the Philadelphia Eagles and they played some of their best football 🏈 with a high level of performance and much less injury. I have worked privately with high school and college athletes, professional athletes... from baseball pitchers to one of my favorites, a golfer on the PGA tour @matteorapido. No matter what your sport, the practice of yoga will benefit you in more ways than I can count. Today, it was an honor to work with both the offensive team and the defensive team at USM during their preseason football camp. Stress, long periods of sitting, running, cycling, and many other activities can contribute to tight hips and tension in the back. Here are 3 #restorativeyoga poses to try. 
Try this sequence at the end of the day or after a strenuous workout to stretch your back and hips, and unwind and destress. Ahhh ... Pose #1 
Supported Bridge Pose to relieve tension in back and hips, and calm the mind. Hold 5-10 minutes. 
Pose #2 
Supported Bridge variation to release hip flexors (Psoas). Gently pull one knee toward your chest. Straighten the opposite leg and let your heel rest on the floor while reaching through the ball of your foot. Hold 3-4 minutes each side. 
Pose #3 
Supported Legs In The Air to improve circulation and digestion, reduce high blood pressure, alleviate stress, #calm the nervous system and ease tension in back and hips. Hold 5-10 minutes. 
To get into the pose: 
lie on the floor with knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Press feet into the floor to lift your hips then slide the block beneath your pelvis. Turn the palms of your hands to face upward. Relax your shoulders, neck and face muscles. Let your hips settle into the support of the block.Turn your attention to the flow of your breath as it moves in and out through your nose. Allow your body to #breathe naturally and effortlessly. #letgo 
To come out of the pose: press into your feet to lift your hips then slide the block out from under you and gently lower your back to the floor. 
Tips: 
A yoga block can be used at three different heights. Use the height that is appropriate for you. Another option to increase the height is to stack two blocks. Choose a level that gives you the most ease. For beginners, I suggest to start on the lowest level as pictured in the photos.You can also use a folded blanket or towel instead of a block. 
If you feel pain, gently come out of the pose.

Today was my first Deep class in FOREVER • I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to do this beautiful practice justice...today I said EFF THAT 👊💥 and stood in my power & I can say with complete certainty that this class today was MAGIC. 
It was everything. I am proud of the class I taught today. 
It came completely from my heart & my intuition. 
I felt SO confident & connected. I’m not hiding from this practice anymore. 
DEEP every Wednesday at 12pm in my home studio. 75 minutes of pure healing magic. It’s so necessary 🖤

WHAT IS DEEP?

Deep is a restorative movement practice that focuses on using the spiral structure technique to connect mind to muscle. It’s low impact & focuses on micro movements in the deep core with physical touch to connect the brain to innervated muscle & restructure the deep core/pelvic floor. It also includes self massage, pressure point activation & has a sound bath meditation in savasana. 
It’s such a beautiful practice that releases so much from the body & truly heals. 
It’s SO good for women, women who have had babies - those suffering with bladder issues or diastisis recti 
It helps to reconnect us to our root, our deep core. 😍😍😍😍

What I have come to LOVE on my active recovery days are practicing restorative yoga AND foam rolling! 🧘🏼‍♀️🧘🏼‍♀️🧘🏼‍♀️ If you’ve used a foam roller, chances are you love it as much as I do, right!! 🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️💜

Just keep in mind a few tips I’ve picked up from my trainers.... like avoiding rolling directly onto your lower vertebrae.... protect that spine y’all! 
Also, don’t hold your breath 💨!! Instead, take nice, long, deep breaths as you roll to increase blood flow to the working muscles. And SLOW DOWN!! Let your body feel each roll s-l-o-w-l-y.

It's Wednesday....so, that means it's time for #pigsplushieyoga!
Since our family has been feeling the stress lately, Pig wanted to share a restorative pose to bring the chill back to our house, and what better way than with #savasana.
.
To do savasana at home with us, just find a comfy place to lie down flat on your back. Close your eyes and focus on your breath. That's it! Easy peasy for any plushie to try out!
Pig does offer additional modifications if you want to add to the chill, but he says they are just options and not necessary. Here they are:
- Let your feet fall to either side to allow your leg muscles to relax.
- Roll your shoulders under and down to open the chest and relax the shoulder muscles.
- Place a bolster or pillows or a rolled up blanket (lots of options!) under your knees to help the low back and hips stretch out.
- Lay a towel over your eyes to block out any distractions and come into a deeper meditative state.

Have fun with it and do what feels good for your plushie body. Can't wait to see your version!

Legs Up the Wall Pose (or Viparita Karani) is a restorative yoga posture that allows the mind and the body to relax, relieving stress and tension. It is one of the most approachable yoga poses, as it doesn’t require much flexibility or strength. Even though it’s a passive pose, its benefits are pretty amazing. It gives you all the benefits of inversion, without the effort.  Benefits of Legs Up the Wall Pose:
• Relaxation
•Facilitates venous drainage and increases circulation
•Soothes swollen or cramped feet and legs
•Stretches the hamstrings and lower back
•Relieves lower back tension
•Massages internal organs and calms the nervous system. •Boosts energy

Legs Up the Wall is exactly as it sounds. Lie on your back with your sit-bones as close to the wall as is comfortable for you. Try not to bring the body to a full 90 degree angle though, this can impede circulation at the hips. Instead, slide your hips a few inches from the wall. Maybe even elevate your hips by placing a cushion, block or blanket under your sacrum. From there, extend your legs up the wall and arms may rest at your side.
