Miss Puff, our female Puffadder (Bitis arietans), is also in opaque cycle. While we’re looking at a snakes eyes let’s learn a bit about them. The fixed scale over their eye is called a brille, this lens cap is not a pliant, focal length-altering optic like that of unlike mammals, birds and lizards. Their retina is unable to produce high resolution central focus, focusing is only achieved by snakes through moving their fixed lens closer to or further from the retina, this leaves snakes with a sort of peripheral vision across their entire field of view. Their visual acuity is based on movement, they are quick to pick up on moving objects but lack sharp definition and detail. They do however have a contractile iris, and in the case of Puffadders and many other species they have a long, vertically slit pupil to allow the widest possible nocturnal aperture while still being able to narrow enough for daylight vision.
Decided to weigh and measure all my reptiles at the same time which I’ve never done before!! Results below ⬇️📋 •
Phoenix - just 1 gram shy of 70 grams and about 11 inches in length. This is very small for his age (6 months) he does have an amazing appetite (for both insects and veggies) poops every day, and husbandry is perfect, so we really don’t know why he won’t gain weight! Hoping to find out Monday, at his first vet appointment! 👨⚕️ •
Venus - a whopping 80 grams and 10.5 inches. She is a total beast, will eat any and everything. I love watching this girl grow! Thinking it may be time for a diet soon though 🧐 •
Spyro - after losing his appetite for many many months during the winter, and not eating much at all, Spyro is currently 51 grams and about 8.5 inches. He’s always been much smaller than Venus, and the last time I weighed him he was at 48 grams, so I consider 51 an improvement and hope it only goes up from here! 🤩 •
Enzo - the littlest of them all. Crested geckos are very slow growers, it can take up to the age of 2 for them to reach their full adult size. At 6 months, Enzo is sitting at 9 grams and 5.5 inches. He has an appetite for his CGD but also loves worms as a treat so I’m not concerned about his size 👶 •
