I remember the first day the penny "dropped" for me. When I got tired of telling Michelle who was 12 at the time to stop combing her hair back, to invest in her hair, and love the beauty she has been gifted with. I made the decision to not put her hair in extentions any more as I felt like it was an unhealthy clucth that supported her to avoid learning and taking care of her own God given hair.
This was so hard, as at the same time I was met by so many opposers from our own community that were in reality trying to bring down what I was trying to build up.
I never forget the time a neighbour came round our house and actually said to her "I don't like your hair like this. You need to put your plaits back in."
Well, I immediatley interceded to say this is her hair not the plaits and we love her hair.
I spent about 3 years of a battle going nowhere trying to encourage her to take care of her hair. Until the penny finally dropped. She needs a role model. And that role model is ME. I decided to become a healthy natural, I attended an @mscurvaceousuk auditon and confidence building workshop, I opened my insta account, and launched my beauty business. All this in 2018. And guess what? My Michelle loves her hair now, takes good care of her hair, and has incredible body confidence✊🏽 Action is as loud as a roaring lion. I started my journey because I wanted to make representation count for her. She was there when I did my first photo shoot, she was there when I did my first stall, she saw me cut my hair, she sees the total admiration I recieve from her brother (my husband)
She sees me take great care of myself, and the time and energy I invest. Her school friends constantly compliment me to her- and think I am 20 years old😎
I became the example she needed. And the greatest acheivment for me was when a boy in two year groups higher than her said to her "you got big ugly lips" and my girl stared him down and said "yes I know there big and I love them so...." he was so shocked that he walked away. My responce: yass honey- you silence the haters💃🏾
So I am sharing this intimate part of my journey because this is my "why" that drives me every day💖

@tanyacompas serving tea on Twitter ☕️ let’s share the platform, and pass the mic this coming year and not be a mouthpiece for other people! Being a true ally, means understanding the intersections of people’s identity - as Tanya says: “Performative allyship is using the platform to speak on behalf of a marginalised group rather than just passing the job/work to someone from said marginalised group to enable you to look like some sort of saviour”
Alfonso Ribeiro filed a federal lawsuit Monday against Epic Games for direct infringement of a copyright.
I’m posting this photo because I’m reminding myself to not be afraid to have photos taken and then uploaded without makeup on. 🙏 (Even if it’s HD 😂)
@wats.media got booked to take some photos for a client today at @santasfantastical and so I asked my buddy ol’ pal @davidkylechoe to be a second shooter. 🎄❤️ So grateful to have awesome friends in my life who are also multi-talented.

Have y'll heard of Sunshine Tarot on YouTube!! LMAO! I discovered her after one of the models from the deck reached out and let me know that a popular reader on YouTube was using my cards, and they were getting a lot of attention! I was so shocked to discover and how wild and crazy Sunshine was, lol - but her energy is so endearing, she is so real, and she is just TOO MUCH! 😂 I love the way she channels through the imagery, and she pulls the most accurate readings I have seen in awhile. She may be super quirky, but at the end of the day, she is her authentic self, and I absolutely adore that! And clearly so do her 77,000 subscribers! 🤗 Thank You Sunshine, for helping a Sistah out!🌟
The deadline ended today, only because the set amount of decks will be printed, and I'm sending the order in within the next day or so. If you still would like to order it, you have another couple of days. There are extra decks available.🌟
DM me for Pre-order LINK ASAP tho!
🙌🏾#YalitzaEnVogueMx#Vogue20#representationmatters
@romacuaron is a stunning film. Watching it took me back to my art house days, only thing missing was a latte and Dunhill cigarette. @yalitzaapariciomtz deserves all the accolades and recognition for her performance. Thank you to Alfonso Cuarón and the cast and crew. 🇲🇽 #representationmatters#vivamexico#oaxaca
Impactful Residency Moments
1) Having a black female OB/GYN attending as my mentor during the early part of my intern year. I was SO SO SOOOOO excited to see someone who looked like me and thus was eager for her to take me under her wing. We even shared the same birthday (December 10th). She was vibrant, articulate, and easy to work with. I learned a great deal from her in the short time before she passed away unexpectedly. I still think about her from time to time (especially in December or when I use surgical techniques she taught me) and ask “what if” I still had her as an ally throughout my residency? As the only black resident in my program, it may have been helpful to have had someone to talk to about certain things.
2) Scrubbing into a case where the ENTIRE OR team was black. Yes, attending, medical student, anesthesiologist, scrub tech, circulating nurse, lifting and turnover team. EVERYBODY! I still have the picture saved from that day.
3) Every time a black patient tells me they’re happy to see me, relieved to see me, trust me, are proud of me, have to tell their child about me, admires my natural hair, or calls me back to their bedside after the team leaves to tell me to keep going and that I’m needed. These are some of the most encouraging moments that validate that I should be here.
My heart’s desire is to add value to and impact the next generation of black physicians. Ready?
Representation matters. Tlalli Artesnal is so very honored to have been able to visit Oaxaca throughout last week. We are very proud of @yalitzaapariciomtz. We also understand that, although there is much more work to be done, this is a step forward for brown and indigenous women in México. 🎥 @voguemexico
