Wandsworth Welcomes Refugees. We are a group of local people and organisations who want to take action to welcome refugees to Wandsworth. It was a great success of the campaigning from local people to see Wandsworth Council pledge to welcome 3 refugees a year for the next 10 years. #chooselove #refugee #battersea #lorddubs #ourturn

I didn’t catch this man’s name. His family is still in Honduras, and his daughter was sick. He was messaging his wife, who had just made a doctors appointment for his daughter. Although he didn’t think it was anything serious, he was still very worried for them.

"I think the church is the best way to work through this process of welcoming and having a refugee family live amongst us." At Bethany, we believe that churches have a unique opportunity to welcome refugee families during their first weeks in the U.S. In this season of giving back, consider starting a group in your church to co-sponsor a refugee family. We'll provide all the resources and expertise you'll need.

Gearing up for my fun new Saturday hobby: Teaching US banking, taxes, and financial planning to local refugees! :) I used to teach Consumer Math to middle schoolers (and organize financial workshops for their families in the evenings), so I'm looking forward to helping new arrivals understand a bit more about their American finances! :) I also learned that refugees coming to the US can get what's called an IOM loan, from the International Organization of Migration... When refugee status is approved, the IOM loan covers airfare/travel to the US. Then the interest-free loan is paid by the refugee over a predetermined amount of time, allowing him or her to start building credit and financial literacy in a new land!

I'm very happy to be working with the USCRI (US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants), as this cause is very near and dear to my heart!

If you're interested in volunteering at all (everything from teaching English to financial literacy classes, to helping set up refugees' new homes, to attending various events), please feel free to contact me or the USCRI!!! Donations are, of course, always appreciated as well! You can be part of giving refugees a great new start on life! :) ♡

今日はStateless Network(無国籍ネットワーク)主催、早稲田大学内ワセダギャラリーにて開催のロヒンギャ写真展、初日でした。

Stateless Network Youth

We believe each and every family deserves to have access to basic needs. Because the families we work with have been forced to flee their homes, they do not have the necessary items to keep warm through the winter months. Without your help, our families would go without the necessities that provide warmth. Thank you for partnering with us to provide our families with basic needs such as heaters, blankets, and coats. Your generosity means the world. If you haven’t donated yet, there’s still time. Head to the link in our bio for more info.

Kaya’s story: a strife for normality
I met Kaya in May 2013, in Shaqlawa. I stopped at a bar for tea, and he was working there as a waiter. We started talking and he told me that he was from Qamishlo, in the Rojava region of Syria. He spotted I was a photographer because “of my face and of my bag”. We spoke a lot, and I ended up spending a long time in Shaqlawa, staying at my sister’s house, and meeting in the evenings with Kaya. At first I was not interested in taking photos, but just hearing his stories. It was later, when I came back, that I started picturing his life, his routines, trying to imagine his future.
Kaya, 29, was studying economy in Latakia, Syria - where he also worked as chef in a restaurant – when the war in Syria started. He needed one last exam to graduate, but he had to flee back to his hometown, in the Kurdish part of Syria. In Qamishlo he joined the YPG (Kurdish fighters) and went fighting to protect his land. #refugee #syrian #kurds #photography #dailylife #storytelling

The parade of a groom's suit and watch through the refugee camp of Ain El Hilweh in #Sidon (Saida City), Lebanon. This is where our family live.

This is a #palestinian tradition and was wonderful to see going past the house.

This place is so full of life. At about 1km square with about 100k people living in it, it's just amazing and our second home.

Watch it with the sound up!

“Disturbed in Their Nests offers evidence that all of us are always one decision or moment away from a totally different life. Judy and Alepho’s experiences illustrate how to overcome fear of the unknown and to engage in relationships that foster respect for our common humanity.“—Anita Ayers Henderlight, executive director of Africa Education & Leadership Initiative

Disturbed in Their Nests; A Journey from Sudan’s Dinkaland to San Diego’s City Heights by Alephonsion Deng and Judy A. Bernstein

Nineteen-year-old refugee Alephonsion Deng, from war-ravaged Sudan, had great expectations when he arrived in America. Suburban mom Judy Bernstein had her own assumptions. Partnered through a mentoring program in San Diego, these two individuals from opposite sides of the world began an eye-opening journey that radically altered each other’s vision and life.

Echoing what our friends at @theirc mentioned, "Women and girls' rights are human rights." 💪 . One of the objectives of #RecipesOfResilience  is to provide the Rohingya women in the community with an income. They are paid for their time in helping us develop the book and receive royalties from the book. Apart from that, we also aim to raise money for our women’s health and development fund. 💜 . #RecipesofResilience  Official Launch 📆 19 December 2018 ⌚ 7.30-9.30PM 📍 Miaja Gallery 👉 RSVP via RoR FB Event Page . John goytiom, a seeking shelter refugee, was born in 86’ in a small village in Eritrea. when John was 21 years old, he was recruited by force to the Eritrean army. “Eritrea is a dictatorship, and the ones who go the army will not come back. The salary is worthless and it’s like a prison for life”. At the army, he had to work all day and to guard the border by night. After two years in the army, John decided to flee and started to walk up north from the border. He made it to a UN facility and stayed there for 40 days, then he made it to Sudan and there he succeeded to enter another UN facility for 4 months. Without saying nothing to his family he was on the road for more than 5 months. Then from the facility he got kidnapped by 3 Bedouin. “They wanted money, or your family give them or you are being tortured until you are sold if you don’t die there from the circumstances.”
John succeeded once again to flee from his kidnappers and to arrive in Israel. From the Egyptian and Israeli border, he arrived in Tel Aviv and finally after 1 year he spoke to his family for the first time. Now after 10 years, he still dreams about the moment he will come back home to Eritrea. Meanwhile, he is just asking for a shelter here in Tel Aviv.

Maimuda is an 11-year-old girl who fled from her home just in September 2017. She recalls the sights of burning houses when her village was attacked and that is when she started to run. She luckily made it out of her burning home but her father was shot and killed during the escape. Today she lives with her older brother and mother in the overcrowded refugee camp in Bangladesh. One of her biggest regrets was not having a chance to take some of her dresses before the whole house burned down including her favorite red dress.

Part of a series of portraits I did while in Bangladesh of Rohingya youths who have fled Myanmar.

Since late August of 2017, renewed violence broke out in Myanmar’s Rakhine state resulting in the mass exodus of Rohingya refugees fleeing into Bangladesh. The Rohingya are one of the most persecuted ethnic groups in the entire world. Over half a million have arrived with little more than the clothes on their backs with many leaving behind their burning villages and lost loved ones.

Over half of the population is children, many traumatised by what they have seen and lost in their homes. Many aspire to finalizing their education, get stable jobs, but their statelessness ultimately stands in the way of them from achieving their dreams.

"Ich suchte mir den Schneiderkurs nicht aus, der Kurs suchte mich aus." erzählt Abdul Aziz. Viele Menschen können durch unsere Bildungsprojekte Berufe lernen und damit neue Perspektiven gewinnen. Einer davon ist Abdul Aziz - ein junger Mann der aus Syrien flüchten musste und nun im Flüchtlingscamp in Jordanien seine Berufung gefunden hat.

Boy from the Ivory Coast at the Refugee Camp in Ghana. Visiting the Camp I discovered that happiness, education, libraries, computer correct living structures could be found in a Refugee Camp. Your/our help can change - it can bring smiles. It can make dreams come true.
