There are literally thousands of phrases that are meant to be motivational, yet somehow leave you feeling like you’re not living up to some fictional standard.
Agreed motivation is part of what gets you going, but habits are a little less easy to come by.
The OLD theory of a habit taking around 21 days to be set does not hold up in practice.
Sure if you smoke cigarettes or flick through Instagram for 21 days I’m sure the habit will kick in. But exercise or try to eat healthily everyday for 21 days and I’ll bet you 100/1 that you’ll still not have formed the habit. More so, take one day off and notice how hard it is to get back on track.
I’ve trained on and off since I was 12 years old when my brother brought home a York home exercise kit. Yet to this day I still find it difficult to motivate myself to get out and go for a workout. What’s helped is not habit, but doing it with friends. Then it’s not a chore, it’s part of catching up, socialising. Doing it by myself was always difficult.
Also my motivation has changed over the years. At the start it was for sport. This was the easiest as I was experiencing progress. Exercise was not exercise, it was simply learning something I was interested in.
Then it was for aesthetics. This was the most difficult as it was highly repetitive and my why was vague. Again, no habit forming but rather forcing myself even when I didn’t want to.
Now, it’s not about how a workout is going to make me look. It’s about how well it can make me perform with my business. To be able to be creative and because I promised to myself that I will. Nothing builds confidence more than being able to keep a promise to yourself.
But what HAS helped most of all has been establishing systems for the start and end of the day. Being able to control the start of your day means that you’ve already started with a win. It makes the day more productive and means you’re able to concentrate on other important areas of your life.
Habits will not change your life, better to find systems that will. #petercobby#motivation 💯 #reflection_perfection#habit#whatsyourwhy#youcanifyouthinkyoucan#keepitgoing#createeveryday
