Active Listening 👂🏻
Listening is an important skill that is needed to effectively communicate. Research shows that individuals typically spend 70% of their time communicating with others, and 45% of that time is spent listening. When clients are involved in activities, it’s important that they are able to effectively listen-not only to understand what the speaker is trying to convey, but to also portray that as a listener they are attending to the speaker. This is called active listening. As RT’s we can help our clients learn not to just “hear” what people have to say....but to know how to fully understand, and respond to the speaker.

The Brain Game 🧠 .
.
The Activity 📝
🔹Provide the client with a tray of items (e.g. scissors, calculator, watch).
🔹Explain to the client that the purpose of the activity is for them to try to guess how many items they can recall within a certain amount of time.
🔹Provide the client with some time to browse all of the items on the tray. The allotted time will depend on what you believe is appropriate for your client.
🔹Once the client runs out of time, ask them to write down as many items that they can remember. 🔹At the end of the activity, discuss with your client some strategies that can be helpful in remembering. For instance, the use of visually chunking items together (based on colours, themes). If the client does not want to write down the items, you can modify the activity by asking them to draw the items instead. .
.
Benefit........................................................... ✔️ Improving short-term recall

Stress, Stress, Stress 🤯
We all experience stress, but do we know how to manage it? Teaching clients about stress can have numerous benefits on increasing their well-being. For some individuals stress can make them feel stuck. Providing clients with opportunities to learn how to assess, appreciate, and adjust to stress can help individuals gain insight into how they can use stress for positive change.
.
Facts about Stress 🤓.................................................................🔹Since our brains are hardwired for safety all the time, one way stress can be triggered is when we begin to feel unsafe (i.e. fight or flight). In our brain, we have 6 more fear based circuits than reward circuits. 🔹80% of individuals pay more attention to negative cues, than positive cues.
🔹Stress is highly contagious, and even addictive. Have you ever felt stressed simply because someone around you felt stressed? .
.
How can we help our clients?
We can teach them that stress is NOT a feeling. Stress IS an insight. What’s interesting about stress is that non-conscious sensing kicks in quicker than conscious sensing. This means that things within our environment, can shape how we think and feel about our experiences. Non-conscious cues can include things such as a lack sleep or social support, or even receiving too many emails. Even when we’re not aware of it, our senses are thrown into a stressed situation! .
.
✔️The best way to manage stress is to help our clients build capacity, connection, and clarity surrounding stress so that they can shift how they perceive stress, and use it as an insight to create positive change.

Sometimes I wonder how my job is real, but then I see the impact and it's so concrete. Today I collaborated with a nurse to get blood samples from a patient who historically has been restrained for blood draws. My sweet coworkers covered my morning program so that I could take this person out for a donut and coffee if they sat for the blood draw. Together we successfully avoided putting someone in the traumatic situation of 5 point restraint and ensured their physical and mental health was maintained! #recreation for the win! #recreationtherapy #therapeuticrecreation #ctrs #mentalhealth

The PER Worksheet ✏️
Creating a behaviour change intervention? The PER worksheet might be just what you need! It uses various Health Behaviour Change Theories (HBCT) to help RT’s identify health behaviour antecedents. What is an antecedent❓It’s an action, event, or circumstance that existed before a behaviour. .
.
Within the worksheet, the five common HBCT’s include the health belief model, social cognitive theory, an ecological perspective, the transtheoretical model, and the theory of planned behaviour. The worksheet is divided into three columns: Predisposing, Enabling, and Reinforcing. It also utilizes prompts within these columns to gather information.
.
.
Understanding health behaviour theories is important, because we can zone in on behavioural antecedents, and create awesome interventions! It’s important to incorporate HBCT’s in behaviour change interventions, because research has shown that interventions are much more effective when they are supported by a theory/model. Ultimately, these theories can assist us in helping our clients change unhealthy behaviours to healthier ones! 😁 This worksheet captures fundamental concepts that are covered within these HBCT’s-in order to help us better identify behavioural antecedents. .
.
✔️This tool really helps to provide an in-depth visual of what skill sets, beliefs, and other areas need to be considered within the intervention by asking a series of questions that are concentrated within certain HBCT’s. It also helps provides RT’s with an idea of where the individual and/or group is on their path towards health seeking behaviours. .

It’s #WebinarWednesday! Older adult settings are changing rapidly and recreation therapists have to adapt to current trends. Assisted living centers have increased admissions of lower functioning patients while there has been an influx of higher functioning residents into SNF’s due to financial constraints of living at an ILF or ALF. As recreation therapists, we have to be able to provide programming to meet varying cognitive abilities regardless of setting. This session is a “step by step” guide on how to start an evidence-based “Brain Fitness” program utilizing the APIED process which can be applied to any older adult setting. Cognitive and psycho-social benefits will be discussed along with related marketing. Check out our website for more info!

Let’s Clean Up!
This activity would be ideal for individuals with late stage dementia. The activity involves sweeping the wrappers into the dust pan. .
.
✔️It’s a great practical activity, that might be of interest to some clients! It can help with fine motor, motor planning, and coordination.
.
Remember when introducing activities to clients with dementia always say, “would you like to (fill in details about the activity)”.

Guided Imagery ✨
Also known as mental imagery or visualization; this exercise evokes ones imagination through the use of words or phrases. .
.
.
Four types of Guided Imagery include.......... 🔹Pleasant Imagery: Quiet and calm environments 🔹 Physiologically focused Imagery: Centres around healing 🔹 Mental Rehearsal or Reframing: Using your imagination to complete and/or prepare for a task, while remaining calm (e.g. speaking in front of a mirror, before completing the same task in a different circumstance-such as delivering a speech in front of others). 🔹Receptive Imagery: This exercise is more reflective, as it involves scanning the body. .
.
.
Benefits include 🙃
✔️Positive impact on immune functioning
✔️Reduced perceptions of pain
✔️ Improved mood
✔️Reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression
✔️Reduced inpatient lengths of stay, reduced need for medication, high patient satisfaction .

Social Skills Grid 👥
As we all may know, social interaction is part of so many leisure activities! That’s great news for us, because leisure initiates social interaction, and social interaction can cause our clients to have positive feelings 🕺🏼However, what happens if some clients lack adequate social skills? For instance, they may exhibit inappropriate behaviours, engage in private behaviours in public places, or may not know how to interact with others-such as not knowing what to ask during a conversation. Well that’s where the Social Skills Grid comes in! It’s a useful tool to help individuals learn about various social skills, and how they may change depending on the situation or individuals involved. .
.
.
Activity Instructions..................................................🔹Create a 4 by 4 grid on an easel pad, or a white board.
🔹On the left hand side include leisure related skills (e.g. greet a person, offer to help).
🔹Across the top, include different groups of people (e.g. family, friends). 🔹Ask clients to brainstorm, and fill in the boxes with how they would carry out those skills with each group. For instance, how would you “greet” a “peer”? 🔹This activity is great, because as indicated previously, clients will learn that social skills may vary depending on who they interact with. How you would greet a peer, may be different from how you would greet a family member. .

Dear Abby 📃
The ability to solve problems and overcome obstacles in life, is an important asset in contributing to health and well-being. Problem solving interventions have the ability to help clients reduce problems and improve their competencies. .
.
.
The Activity:

Essential oils for Mindfulness 😌
Facilitating a Mindfulness group? Why not try adding some essential oils to your session! Not only can clients learn a little bit about the oil being diffused, but it can also help them focus and relax!
.
.
.
Here are some top essential oils to consider:
🔹Frankincense: This essential oil has been used since ancient times, and is quite popular! It’s been known to help individuals feel relaxed, and promote feels of peace, calmness, satisfaction, and overall wellness. 🔹Sandalwood: This essential oil has a dry and woody aroma. It’s a common essential oil that’s been used in religious rituals, and meditation practices. When diffused, it’s known to promote mood, and uplift feelings. 🔹Vetiver: Containing an earthy aroma, this essential oil has been known to ground emotions. Sesquiterpenes which are found in some essential oils, contain grounding properties; which means that when they are inhaled, they can produce a calming and grounding effect on emotions. This can be useful for those that feel stressed, anxious, or nervous. 🔹Cedarwood: Now this essential oil also contains sesquiterpenes. However, this guy has the highest amount of sesquiterpenes! This essential oil will definitely help promote a relaxing environment, and help clients feel more calm and grounded with their emotions. .

Paint in a Bag 🎨
This activity is exactly what it sounds like...paint in a bag! Since the paint is contained in a bag, this activity is practically mess free 💁🏼‍♀️ Which makes it great if working with children, and even the elderly. This activity stimulates the sense of touch, thus making it a great tactile activity. In certain populations, such as older adults, their sensory functions have declined-and will continue to do so as they age. In individuals living with Alzheimer’s or other related disorders, participating in tactile activities such as this, may even help with communication. How? Because touch has the ability to elicit emotional responses, which has the potential to start a conversation! .
.
Benefits of this activity in people living with Alzheimer’s and other related disorders:
✔️Increased concentration ✔️Increased alertness ✔️Increased Creativity ✔️Increased socialization .
.
.
Activity Instructions 📃
🔹Cut out a piece of white paper to fit into a large Ziploc bag.
🔹Squeeze generous drops of different coloured paint onto paper (try using neon colours...they’re brighter and more eye catching). Feel free to also add some sparkles! ✨ 🔹Insert paper carefully into bag and seal it closed.
🔹Gently press the surface of the bag with fingers, and move around. (Participants can also use marbles to trace over the bag to create designs)
🔹Once completed, take the paper out of the bag and leave it to dry. .
.
.
TRIED THIS ACTIVITY? COMMENT BELOW TO LET US KNOW HOW IT WENT! 😄💬

Loving Kindness Meditation 🧘🏼‍♀️ This mindfulness exercise allows clients to cultivate kindness. Not only for themselves, but for others as well. Practicing kindness has been shown to lead to a happier, and more fulfilling life. Overall, individuals that are kind, are more satisfied with their lives and relationships. This exercise allows clients to nurture kindness, by repeating a series of mantras. These mantras center on receiving loving kindness, and sending it out to loved ones, neutral people (acquaintances), and all living beings.
.
.
Benefits when practiced consistently:
✔️ Feel more connected 👫👭👬✔️Lower symptoms of anxiety and depression✔️Increase in positive emotions (joy, love, contentment, gratitude, hope) 😄😌😊✔️Social interactions and close relationships are more fulfilling .
