Fleeing financial doom, an obnoxious East Side doyenne -famed for her unnaturally phlegmatic reaction to her husband’s death - and her infantile son scurry off to Paris to live out the final act on the Île Saint-Louis with a spiritual cat and some strange new friends. 🥂

Found a stack of old notebooks while getting rid of stuff over the weekend and one of them contains a list of 213 books I want to read in my lifetime.
I made the list in 2017 while pregnant with my youngest son, and of the 213 I've managed to only read: 1984 by George Orwell, Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay, I Write What I Like by Steve Biko (re-read), Men Explain Things to Me by Rebecca Solnit, Sisters of the Yam by Bell hooks, Women's Liberation and the African Freedom Struggle by Thomas Sankara and I Do Not Come To You By Chance by Adaobi Tricia Nwauboni. All of these read in this year.
I started, but did not finish: The Souls of Black Folk by WEB du Bois, The Black Jacobins by CLR James, Assata Shakur: An Autobiography, The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.

I have added to my library: Disgrace by JM Coetzee, I Am Malala (didn't finish library copy in 2015), Eats Shoots and Leaves by Lyme Truss, This Bridge Called my Back by Cherrie Moranga and Gloria Abzaldina, The Argonauts by Maggie Nelson, Sister Citozen by bell hooks, War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy, The Lord of the Ring by JRR Tolkein, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, Sister Outside by Audre Lorde, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston and A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf.

If I were to pick one I'd go with Sisters of the Yam. This is because I feel that we desperately need to build and sustain safe spaces where women can come into the company of other women and just love one another. I personally feel we need to build sisterhoods, because (like I was saying to B today), women are at the reviewing end of all of the world's bullshit. We need to keep sane.

What's on your To Be Read List? How many have you read? Which were your favourites? Which just weren't worth it?

I used to be able to sleep in any time the option came up, but here I sit on vacation and wide awake way to early. I remember once around 12 asking my grandpa why he always got up at 5 when he was retired and could sleep. His answer—I’ve been doing it so long my body just naturally wakes up. Apparently that’s now me—at 37! 😉 At least I have a good book and good cuddler. How’s your Monday so far?

“My warmth was hidden until I found the right people...” 🖤🖤🖤I cannot say I’ve ever read a book that got me more. Childhood trauma (especially sexual assault) permeates every part of your life and you don’t understand it or have the words to express your feelings, so you bury it, you cope, you survive. 🖤🖤🖤 “Hunger” is a raw, deeply moving and tremendously personal narrative that will leave you forever changed.

When you arrive before the doors open, you read. This is why I always carry a book—emergencies!
My first read by @roxanegay74 was a knockout. Ayiti. Haiti 🇭🇹 . A collection of short stories that delivers massive impact. Powerful and raw. Characters will expose their struggles, grief, love, fear, pride and shame. In each story you’ll find the thread that shares the secret...

Memoirs are probably my favorite thing to read. I love learning about someone else’s life! We’re all so different and yet oftentimes so similar. ••••••••••••••••••••
Celebrity memoirs are usually the easiest to find, so I scoop them up whenever I can. I’ve recently started listening to them on audiobook and I’m really enjoying that, too.
••••••••••••••••••••
These are a few from my TBR pile. What are some of your favorite memoirs? (I’d love some non-celeb recommendations!)

What’s the most books you’ve ever read in a month? 💃

I’m sure by now we’ve all seen those ridiculous articles in Vulture and HuffPo that were trying to say that Bookstagrammers don’t actually read *SMOTHERS ENDLESS MANIACAL LAUGHTER* 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Oh darlings, pretty sure we can read you under a table. ... and then we’ll take a picture of you, splayed incapacitated over our books, while we sip coffee and enjoy our next read over your passed out body. 💃

But you know what we won’t do? We won’t post that photo without your permission. Cause we’re classy like that. 💃

Here are my week two shoutouts for #BuriedInBooksNovember! Drop by and show some love to your fellow booksters, and their beautiful accounts!! .

My husband loves to tease me about the giant pile of books beside my bed. (He’s not wrong—I use it as a table.) But it looks like he has now developed his own mini pile! Do you have your own stack beside your bed? Or have you come up with a better system? I’m up to 60+ and it’s a bit crazy!

Underestimating the lying demagogue with his simplistic, emotional messages, thinking he’ll act more responsibly in power than during his pursuit of it; deadlocked, ineffective, polarised politics; a hostile party takeover; widespread dissatisfaction, distrust, division and disillusion; resentment and rejection of difficult realities; the tyranny of populism and irresponsible, isolationist nationalism; an unperturbed, intractable fan base unfazed by irrationality; a penchant for executive orders, subverting the system from within; fearmongering about immigration and trade; anti-intellectualism; attacking the media; compliant judges and jurists; even a fledgling resistance ... we know this story.

📚📚Rezension📚📚

Hallöchen liebe Lesehasis!😘🐰
~~~
Heute kommt nun endlich auch meine Meinung zu "Der Insasse" von Sebastian Fitzek.
Lieben Dank an @droemerknaur , die mir diese tolle Novität zur Verfügung gestellt haben!💓
~~~
~~~
Als Protagonisten sehen wir Till Berkhoff, den Vater des verschwundenen Max.
Er wirkte anfänglich auf mich leider nicht besonders sympathisch und obwohl es typisch Fitzek ist, dass der Protagonist sich Hals über Kopf allen möglichen Gefahren aussetzt, erschien es mir hier etwas unauthentisch.
Zu Beginn schlagen auch allerhand Figuren auf den Leser ein, ohne, dass man sich vorher ein Bild hätte machen können.
Eine langsame Einführung hätte mir besser gefallen.
Bei vielen Charakteren hat mir die überdramatisierte Darstellung nicht gefallen.
~~~
~~~
Das Ende und die Auflösung haben mir gut gefallen, auch wenn es stellenweise untypisch brutal und blutig war.
~~~
FAZIT

Dr Bobby E. Wright asks, "During slavery and colonization, ifthey didn't give us good education, good housing, good food or clothes, why did they give us such good religion?" I recieved, from @manemmanuel89, a copy of a pamphlet published by Morija Printing Works in Lesotho as a result of a lecture given by Rev. Charles Bourquin to the Athenaeum Society of Pretoria on the Native Problem.

I started reading it in the morning but because I was to be out of my office most of the day I printed it out and took it everywhere ... First to the Unisa Gallery (where there is a new exposition on show), and then to my new division (which I spent the day furnishing). In the introduction to Modern African Stories, which I was reading at the end of last week, the authors mention the uniqueness of the stories from South Africa and attribute this to the fact that no other African country, although colonised, had to deal with issues of racial segregation.

Over the weekend I got into a conversation with @nomsas1 about white people and the land problem, and it spiralled to our general feeling towards white people in South Africa who dare say that we need to stop lamenting about apartheid because we've been a democratic state now for over 25 years. This conversation is common amongst black people.

Our national anthem ends with the words, "South Africa our land," yet the majority of this country's citizens cannot point to a piece of land that is theirs, if they can it is attached to the bank. Issues such as land, opportunity, racial profiling, privilege ... remain a barrier between people in this country, this is mainly because we don't eat truth and reconciliation or social cohesion as a people.

Coming back to this pamphlet, written by a missionary so meticulous you'd mistake his efforts as being in favour of the black condition. But no, rather Bourquin is concerned with how rapidly we as black people expand and the detriment this spells to the white generation. He feels it his rightful place, together with other white people, to teach us manners and control where we live, what we eat, and how we conduct our lives, on account that we are a lesser species.

So I have no merch, but I’m very interested in getting some. Just a little. We don’t have a lot of space in our house so we are always looking to downsize/declutter, but there is so much cute merch out there! Do you have a favorite type or shop? Let me know in the comments!⠀

Also: I have decided that yes, I do need a few more beta readers to help make sure my MG Steampunk Fantasy stays MG enough. Most of my regular readers are more in the YA realm. So ... if you are a beta reader and a Middle Grade type of person and an overly-long steampunky book about a girl who solves crimes by speaking to fire sounds like something you might want to help me fix up, then give me a DM! I will totally be happy to return the favor and do a beta swap!⠀

Loving this #StephenKing #biography by #LisaRogak .

I must admit I haven't read a lot og biographies but, her writing and the way she combines the information and actual quotes make this so easy and by lack of a better word; comfortable, to read that you don't notice how much time passed by since you've picked it up. ~📖👻 #stephenkingfan

*The Girl Who Drank The Moon* *Kelly Barnhill*
*💙💙💙💙💙*
The Girl Who Drank The Moon was a very good book!! It is at a lexile of 640, which is very low for me, but it was still very enjoyable. I rated it at 5 hearts out of 5. The story was very unique and the characters were amazing. If I fall in love with characters, I fall in love with books. The main character, Luna, and accidentally enmagicked child is so hard not to fall in love with. Her Grandmother’s care and love for her and willingness to do anything make me love her. Glerk the swamp monster and Fyrian the dove sized dragon though, are definitely my favorites. The villain of the story is pretty predictable and doesn’t get as much backstory as I would like, but they weren’t terrible.
The actual plot of the story if you are talking technically, was okay some parts and not at others. The beginning was very good and I liked the ending and everything pieced together nicely, but the last few rising actions and the climax I feel could have some more tension. There was only one part of the ending I didn’t like but that was more personal opinion than book structure or quality.
The writing was very good. I liked how the chapters went between different perspectives, I especially liked seeing the madwomans perspective. I didn’t get why we get to see hers at first but it came together at the end.
Overall, I very much enjoyed this book, I couldn’t put it down. If you need an easy book with a good magical fiction story, pick up The Girl Who Drank The Moon ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Ok, I had to do it this month. A #readalong with @fiercereads. I liked this book, just as much as I liked the other book by @lbardugo The Six of Crows. I'll have to follow this readalong for the next couple of months to finish the trilogy, and get ready for a new read by the author that comes out in 2019. I know!!! 2019 is soo close now, it's scary. 7 weeks if I'm not mistaken. Anyways, this was my book 51 for the year. Not part of my reading challenge, but I'm glad I jumped on this one. Fantasy reads sometimes clear your pallets for what's next. And next I have a very serious read on cancer 😓

Maybe a bit intense for a Monday morning but no book has ever hit me like this one. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
I was sexually assaulted as a young teen by an adult who was supposed to help me, not hurt me, and these feelings were ones I shared, not at first, but eventually. It took a couple years, but then over a short time, I too began to build my fortress. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
It took me years to understand what happened, why I took on that blame and shame, and, although my wall of safety was never that big, it took me many more years to begin to feel safe enough to tear that wall down. And some days with everyone sharing, as glad as I am to have so many people putting it out there and having truths heard, it pulls the scab off the wound and starts the healing process all over again. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
If you haven’t read Hunger, please know that it may be a trigger for those of you dealing with sexual assault, but it may also be worth reading. I know it has been for me. 🖤

I finished All in yesterday and i cried like everybody else. It's such a cute story, i love Jonah and Kacey and i really like Teddy too. Can't wait for the second book! [SPOILER]
Even though its a heartbreaking story i recommend it because life sometimes is shit and i think its important to show that in books too.
[SPOILER END]

DAY 6: BEAUTY
I find beauty in books, and since I posted lovely pictures of nature the other day, I thought I should share the beauty of a good education.
I am currently reading a book, well I am always currently reading a book, about 4 or 5 I rotate through. The one I am loving right now is "Simply Classical." If you love Classical Education, but have a child with special needs this is the book to read!

~~~
Ich habe es beabsichtigt klein gehalten und erstmal nur die ausstehenden Rezi-Exemplare eingeplant, die ich vom @rowohltverlag und @penguin_verlag bekommen habe. 😍
Lieben Dank nochmal dafür! 💓
~~~
~~~
Auf „Believe Me“ bin ich schon sehr gespannt, da mir „The Girl Before“ unerwartet gut gefallen hat! 🤗💪🏼
The grim reality of twenty-first century America refracted through the lives of four former high school friends returning to their hometown in Ohio, each of them part of a darkness that none of them completely understands.
A big American novel in the tradition of Joyce Carol Oates and Jonathan Franzen.
Hi everyone. I realized that maybe I should introduce myself. My name is Vanessa. I am an accidental librarian and a lifetime lover of reading. Here are 5 more things about me:
1. I am a grandmother of 4. One granddaughter three grandsons.  The two newest ones are in the picture.
2. I was an EA for 13 years in a public school and then the job in the library opened in the school so I was given a chance to take over the library.
3. I've been married for 28 years which is basically one life sentence and a few years. My husband and I live on a farm in Southern Alberta.
4. I have three children. Sadly none of them were readers.
5. The students at school often wonder how many favorite books I have because everyone I read seems to be my favorite. A couple of my favorites from when I was a child were Little House on the Prairie, and Anne of Green Gables. I still have my original copies that my parents bought for me.
What were some of your childhood favorites?
Hallöchen liebste Bücherhasis😘🐰
~~~
Rezi-Time😍
~~~
Das Cover erinnert mich sehr stark an den ersten Teil der Mayhem-/The Last Ones To Know-Reihe von Jamie Shaw. Da hätte ich mir etwas mehr Kreativität gewünscht.
~~~
~~~
Die Geschichte zwischen Mia und Nic habe ich gerne verfolgt und sie hat mir gut gefallen.
Es wurde ab der Hälfte noch interessanter und ich wollte gerne wissen, wie es weitergeht.
Einige Dinge waren etwas über die Strenge geschlagen und viel zu schnell aufgeführt.
~~~
Dialog spricht.
~~~
Leider muss ich noch auf eine Aussage eingehen, die mich sehr verärgert hat:
Relativ zu Beginn wird ein Spruch einer Großmutter aufgeführt, der besagt, [dass ein Mann, der dich heiraten will, nicht will, dass du aussiehst, als hättest du schon zwei Kinder bekommen.]
Diese Szene finde ich wirklich unangebracht und sollte gestrichen werden, da sie meiner Meinung nach auch kein Gegenargument beinhaltet.
~~~

📗Those covers said to me: "Look at me, read my back! Open me and read what's inside of me. Buy me..."
Also her mit euren Empfehlungen!

What’s your gut reaction to this book? If I had to guess, it’s probably not a positive one. (UPDATE: I think I was judging you all unfairly by thinking your reactions would automatically be negative ones! I should have known better! 😊)••••••••••
What I see when I look at this book is a personal experience different from my own. To me, that’s kind of the point of being a human—seeing things from someone else’s perspective, learning about the human experience in all forms. ••••••••••
I’ll be the first to admit this is a fluffy, guilty pleasure type of read, but every person has a story to tell if we listen. 📖

[Advt] Hey nerds,
to be honest:
- Harry Potter is awesome
- Lego is awesome.
- and playing switch is awesome too.
And a combo of all three of them is one of the best ideas ever.
Do you like the Lego games? This is my first and its so fun to play! Unfortunaly my boyfriend doesn't want to play it with me, so i need someone else or i have to play alone 🙄

Black ink is definitely a must read and I’m so glad I was able to get it back from the library so I can read the rest this month. 🖤

I have to admit that I still haven't read #HeartOfThorns ... This story is not what I usually write about, but I am having a lot of fun and I thought I'd share a few non-spoilery pieces with you guys. I normally just share positive and encouraging writer stuff on this account, so I hope you don't mind me deviating from that plan a little bit every now and then 😁 I'd like to get more comfortable sharing small bits of my writing here and figured that #nanowrimo is the perfect time to start 😜 ✨
.
So, my #nanowrimo2018 novel revolves around 17-year-old Mia, who makes videos trying to disprove local urban legends and ghost stories wrong. She explores abandoned houses and locations claiming to be haunted. So far, she's never found any proof of the supernatural, but things start getting weird when she explores the forest around her hometown. 👻👻👻

What are your nano novels about (or non-nano novels if you're not doing nanowrimo this year 😅)? .

Having grown up in a lighthouse, loneliness is all Isabelle Thornton has ever known--and all, she assumes, she ever will know. But when her lightkeeper father rescues a young man from the lake, her sheltered world is turned upside down.
My Review:
This was the first book I read by this author. I felt like the romance was rushed and did not like how she continuously went behind her fathers back. I think that it was because the story was a novella and I highly doubt that the official books of the series are rushed.
⭐️⭐️⭐️

Library holds are in! (And I was able to get another copy of Black Ink since I didn’t get a chance to finish mine before it had to go back!)
