Looking for something long-wanted we found an ad for a perfect-looking old glass door True cooler and went to look a lot closer. When we got to the hinterlands of Hazeldell, North of Vancouver, WA, not only was the deal so sweet but the seller turned out to be in the craft beer business too, a veteran of many an era (are we in the fourth phase yet?)... after helping us load up this heavy treasure he recommended a closeby local brewery too, so we sought it out and ended up hanging with the brewers and owners of @brothers_cascadia, tasting their very fine beers including a delicious forthcoming collab with our friends up at @logsdonfarmhouseales, and generally counting our lucky stars. Then today’s new recipe brew day, off to a roaring start, took a sharp turn when our boiler up and quit at the end of sparge (a pump died). We sent it “raw” or unboiled (and maybe unscathed) to a fermenter and turned back to our new cooler move. In the midst of it all the @rusebrewing team rolled in with a truck full of Pinot barrels destined for their new spot, and we showed them around the barn. In Oslo I had the chance to visit the brewery Eik & Tid (meaning oak and time), brewing exclusively raw beer with a traditionnal Kveik yeast strain they got from a farmer.
They showed me those amazing antiques : a wooden ring used to store the yeast between two brews, and a wooden ale bowl from 1791 😮

啤酒píjiǔ. Beer. Europeans introduced beer to China by the early twentieth century. The first brewery was established by the Russians in Harbin (哈尔滨 Hā'ěrbīn ) in 1900. In 1903, a German-British brewing company opened a brewery in Germany’s Shandong colony - Qingdao (青岛Qīngdǎo). After the outbreak of WWI Japan took over the brewery, but in 1945, Tsingtao was taken over Chinese owners. In 1949, it became a state-owned enterprise and was later privatized in 1990. While visiting Qingdao, I tried the brand’s raw beer.
