As a resident... as a fellow... you always cross your fingers & hope the pager doesn’t go off. •
Today I wasn’t holding a pager, I wasn’t even on call... but my phone did ring- with a call from a referring physician who cared enough about his patient to want to talk through the imaging personally in order to deliver the best possible care in the week ahead. I was delighted to answer his call, bring up the case, and contribute to this patient’s journey. •
I suppose after all that training I finally know what being a doctor feels like. You want that phone to ring. And when it does-you’re reminded of your passion, your why and the tremendous gift & honor of caring for human life. •
This small tile on my desk reads “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us” - Ralph Waldo Emerson. •
As I sit and read, and the patient’s images from my monitor reflect on the glossy white surface, I’m reminded that ultimately it’s what is within me that allows me to practice the art of medicine. •
We all start from nothing, right? I am still an amateur (for sure), but I can become an artist. That’s why I keep drawing. That’s why I want to share my journey and I hope I can encourage you to keep drawing/painting/crafting/creating, any way you can.
“To the attentive eye, each moment of the year has its own beauty, and in the same field, it beholds, every hour, a picture which was never seen before, and which shall never be seen again.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson — Sunday afternoon walk on the Wildwood Trail 🍁
This quote resonates with me so well. For the majority of my life, I lived and made decisions based on what others wanted and what I thought they expected me to do.
It was only a few years ago that I decided to live my own life and make my own decisions. It takes work and it's not easy, but it's worth it. There have been mistakes along the way, but you don't learn until you make them.
Always be true to yourself and DO YOU.
“Much of the shadows in this life are caused by standing in one’s own sunshine” - Ralph Waldo Emerson 〰️ It can be easy to forget that we are responsible for our own happiness - we have the power to both create it and destroy it. Remember you are the captain of your own ship in life - if you don’t like the route you are taking, grab the wheel! Your happiness is created by YOU - and that is your power ❤️ #mondaymindfulness
"A man should learn to detect and watch that gleam of light which flashes across his mind from within, more than the lustre of the firmament of bards and sages. Yet he dismisses without notice his thought, because it is his. In every work of genius we recognize our own rejected thoughts; they come back to us with a certain alienated majesty. Great works of art have no more affecting lesson for us than this. They teach us to abide by our spontaneous impression with good-humored inflexibility then most when the whole cry of voices is on the other side. Else to-morrow a stranger will say with masterly good sense precisely what we have thought and felt all the time, and we shall be forced to take with shame our own opinion from another." // #ralphwaldoemerson#self -reliance #reading#currentlyreading#books
