Fairbanks-Morse built this coal tower for the Pere Marquette Railroad. With a 500-ton capacity, it fed the railroad’s engines at the Ludington yard. Now the headquarters of Genesee & Wyoming shortline Marquette Rail, the yard was much busier in steam days. Back then it handled railcars coming off and going onto the railroad’s ferries. At one point, 14 ferries operated out of Ludington.
Today, one of the ferries, the SS Badger, still crosses from Ludington to Manitowoc WI, albeit with automobiles and some commercial vehicles instead of rail cars. PM successor CSX sold the ferries in 1983 and the Ludington yard tracks end near the coaling tower.
