Ok so maybe it’s a direct result of my permanent resting ‘p'itch face (Instagram Instafrowns on Instabadwords mmmmkay?) but I’ve found that photographers aren’t always the most social creatures. I would say that 95% of the time I’ve crossed paths with someone out shooting it usually follows the basic pattern of awkward eye contact followed by a quick glance down to the hands to scope out each others camera before the interaction is finalised with either the exchange of ‘hellos’, grunts or quite typically, silence.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m certainly no social butterfly… I’m barely a social caterpillar (dad jokes galore folks) and I certainly don’t feel like photo takererakerers have any obligation to strike up a conversation with a random on the street, I just find it interesting that we all share this passion for photography yet we often choose not to interact with each other. I ran into a few photographers over the course of this weekend that left me thinking ‘what’s the deal?' Are we really that competitive or something? But then I met Keithmeister-G.
Ok so his name was just Keith. But ol’ Keithy G saw we had a similar interest, walked up behind me in the pitch black and struck up a conversation. Once I’d confirmed that my heart rate would eventually return to normal, I learned that Keith was about to retire and planned to move over to Vietnam to tour around on his motorcycle and take photos. We talked about our gear, we talked about interesting locations, we exchanged ideas, I asked him where babies come from, he said he also wasn’t sure, but the fact is, we interacted over a shared interest and, it was pretty kewl.
So if you see me out and about somewhere, despite my resting ‘p’itch face, come say hello, especially if you know where babies come from.
