#tbt Joe Sakic - Quickest release on a shot I’ve ever seen. Consummate professional. He was one of my favorite players growing up. Once the Nordiques made the move to Colorado, they became a dominant team in the west for many years. The Cup winning team in 1996 had Valeri Kamensky doin spin-o-ramas and shit. Conference finals 1999 then again in 2000. They added their second Cup in 2001. That 2001 team was a fuckin all star team: Sakic, Forsberg, Hejduk, Tanguay, Roy, Bourque, Foote, Drury. Sakic had a monster year that year with 54 goals and 118 points adding 26 more points in the playoffs. Classiest thing I’ve seen done in the game was him turning to hand Ray Bourque the Cup.

Before the decision was made to move the Nordiques to Denver, Marcel Aubut had decided to change the entire look of the team in the event he was able to attract enough financing to play in Quebec for the 1995–96 season, though because of missing an NHL deadline, the change would have not been in effect until the 1996–97 Season. The Nordiques would have abandoned the blue, white, and red palette they had worn throughout their history in favour of a teal, black, and navy scheme. The team would also have abandoned the "igloo holding a hockey stick" logo they had used for their entire existence in favour of a fierce looking siberian husky, with "NORDIQUES" in grey block letters below it and the "I" in the team's name fashioned to look like an icicle. These designs were published in local papers before the team ultimately decided to move. The Nordiques played in the WHA from 1972-1979 & then joined the NHL 1979-1995.
They were named the Nordiques because they were one of the northernmost teams in professional sports in North America. Quebec City is located at 46 degrees north latitude; Nordiques translated from French to English means Northerners or Northmen.
The Nordiques hold the distinction of being the only major professional sports team to have been based in Quebec City in the modern era, and one of only two ever; the other, the Quebec Bulldogs, played one season in the NHL in 1919–20. I loved the Igloo/fleur-de-lis Nordic blue, white & red uniform.
Personally I didn’t like the thought of a change. Do you? .

The original “Flower”. Lafleur accumulated an impressive array of individual awards to accompany his five Stanley Cup Championships. In 1976, he began a three-year domination of both the Art Ross Trophy, given to the NHL’s top scorer, and the Pearson Trophy (now the Ted Lindsay Award) awarded to the league’s top performer by his playing peers.
The spring of 1977 saw “Le Démon Blond” win the first of two consecutive Hart Trophies, awarded to the NHL’s most valuable player. His 26 playoff points earned Lafleur the Conn Smythe Trophy as the postseason MVP and paved the way to that year’s Stanley Cup parade.
Shortly after the 1984-85 season got underway, Lafleur shocked the hockey world with the news that he had decided to retire. He left the game with 518 regular season goals, a total second only to 8 time Stanley Cup champion Maurice Richard’s 544. His 728 assists and 1,246 points in regular season competition lead all Habs.
Inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1988, Lafleur returned the next season. He suited up with the Rangers and Nordiques until 1990-91, becoming the second player after 4 time Stanley Cup winner Gordie Howe to play in the NHL after being enshrined in the Hall of Fame. .

🏒🏒
On October 23rd 1975, Major League Hockey had arrived in Cincinnati when the new Cincinnati Stingers of the World Hockey Association took home ice at Riverfront Coliseum versus the Edmonton Oilers. The Stingers started the season with four road games before finally playing at home. This is the actual ticket stub that I used to attend that game!
🥅🥅
Stingers Rick Dudley, scored the first goal on Coliseum ice as the Stingers downed the Oilers 6-4! This was the very next day after the Cincinnati Reds had defeated the Boston Red Sox in the 1975 World Series!
