Jasper Jones is not your typical drama. It is presented by Queensland Theatre as a restaging of the Melbourne Theatre Company production and based on the smash hit novel by Craig Silvey.
This rollercoaster of a plot which brings to life the stories of a 1960’s sleepy Western Australian town, Corrigin, packs a veritable punch. While I was unfamiliar with the original novel, the anticipation of seeing a new story coursed through me as I mingled within the auditorium of the QPAC Playhouse.
As the opening scenes played out, I became engrossed in a story cum comedy drama with smatterings of coming of age themes, nestled at the heart of a murder mystery. Sounds complex? It certainly is. But with that complexity comes a richness of character that makes it hard to deny this is a timeless story.
Our Project Manager, Phoebe, has been up early this morning responding to emails. We have been absolutely INUNDATED in the last few days. So grateful for the support of everyone who's contacted us. 🙏🙏🙏

Went and saw #JasperJones tonight and it was absolutely brilliant - a mystery right to the very end! It's been a while since I've watched a play this intriguing and immersive, and have been able to connect with the characters. The set was also realistically stunning, always love a good revolve. Congratulations to the creatives, cast, crew and the @qld_theatre team on this remount. Go and see it!! 🍑 w/@gwishy #qldtheatre#playhouse#craigsilvey#pagetostage#mysterydrama
THEATRE || @qld_theatre’s Jasper Jones is coming to @atqpac this month!
In the sizzling summer of 1965, a bookish 14 year-old boy flees from the boredom and bullying of small-town life by burying himself in stories of epic adventure. He never thought he’d find himself living one.
Charlie Bucktin lives in a tiny, insignificant bush town where nothing happens. Nothing, that is, until the town’s very own Huckleberry Finn – the light-fingered and dark-skinned Jasper Jones – stumbles upon a gruesome crime out by the dam.
Who else would he call on for help but the sharpest kid around? A midnight tap at Charlie’s window sparks a race to solve a murder and clear Jasper’s name.
Somewhere between Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird and classic movie Stand by Me, Kate Mulvany’s adaptation of Craig Silvey’s novel is a bittersweet, joyous coming-of-age yarn set in a community where every weatherboard house hides a dark secret.
Jasper Jones is playing at the Playhouse at QPAC 28 July – 18 August.

From more than 90 entries for the Queensland Premier’s Drama Award 2018-19 (QDPA), and the trio of finalists revealed earlier this year, Brisbane writer David Megarrity has won with his family-oriented play, The Holidays.
Queensland Arts Minister Leeanne Enoch announced the winner at the Good Muslim Boy opening night after party.
Megarrity’s work was selected ahead of fellow finalists Hannah Belanszky for ‘don’t ask what the bird look like’ and Anna Yen for her work Slow Boat.
The Holidays introduces us to 12-year-old Oliver Holiday and his Mum and Dad who are suddenly on their way to his Grandfather’s beachside cottage. However, as more clouds loom, it appears that the Holidays, instead of getting away from it all, have taken on a burden - or a legacy - they are unsure how to manage.
David Megarrity’s The Holidays is a disarming meditation on mortality and father son relationships. It’s a delicious combination of high-tech ambition and low-fi theatricality. David’s unique imagination and command of all of the elements of storytelling will create a deeply affecting sensory experience for audiences when we bring it to the stage”, said Queensland Theatre Artistic Director Sam Strong, who was part of the judging panel for the awards.
“The QPDA sits at the centre of Queensland Theatre’s ambition to lead from Queensland in the nurturing of new stories and new talent. This cycle of the award featured a wonderfully diverse range of works from writers from all around the country, including an all-Queensland shortlist of an impressively crafted debut play from Hannah Belanszky, and an epic multi-disciplinary historical story from Anna Yen. Congratulations to all the artists who contributed to and worked on the award,” he said.
