“I used to take science workshops for kids, because of which I became friends with a lot of young students. I’m really easy to talk to, so they felt comfortable with me. Soon, I realized that most of them were curious about the opposite gender and the idea of sex. But since it’s such a ‘hush hush’ topic, there was nobody to give them accurate information.
This made me wonder – if these kids couldn’t talk about a ‘first kiss’ they’d loved, how would they talk about a kiss that wasn’t consensual? Children have no idea how to deal with stalking, contraception, inscest, abuse, consent….Usually Indian parents are so involved in their kids’ lives, yet they’re clueless about these things and choose not to talk about it.
Which is why, I decided to write a book called, ‘Let's Talk about Guys Girls and Sex’. I wanted to include real life stories in it, and when I asked around, I was shocked that there were so many people who’d had traumatizing sexual experiences.
I met a 60-year-old lady who still hasn’t dealt with the fact that she’d been abused by her relative when she was a child. He’s 90 years old now and she hasn’t confronted him about his actions! I even met a man, who was abused by his aunt when he was a kid, and he kept asking me ‘Is this normal?’ because he’d never heard about males being abused by females.
It was disheartening to see so many people carrying this burden around just because we as a society aren’t ready to talk about it. After our conversations, a lot of these people told me that they finally felt free and could now move on with their lives. I started writing this book for young adults, but I realized that a lot of older people were relating to it too.
My son was in 10th grade when he read the first draft and I honestly feel that if I can talk to my teenage kids about it, then why can’t everybody else? I know they’re not going to tell me everything but atleast if I show them that I’m open to having such a conversation, then they’ll come to me if they ever get into trouble. They know that I’m here for them….and sometimes that’s enough.”
