I love taking walks, and I especially love taking walks on the beach! They always seem to relax me and help me clear my mind. Do you like walks too? Something called bilateral stimulation may be part of the reason why they help “clear our minds” so well. What is it, exactly?

Bilateral stimulation is part of a trauma treatment called EMDR. It involves stimulating opposing sides of the body (in a left to right manner such as walking which involves alternating the movement of our feet) while processing difficult or painful memories. Francine Shapiro, who developed this treatment, theorized that bilateral stimulation helps us process emotional information (like trauma) differently. Others theorize that the dual stimulation induces a state similar to our REM sleep cycles.

Rode my exercise bike for the last 45 minutes and burned 450 calories. I also purged breakfast and lunch today and lost half a pound since morning and will lose more overnight. I need to buy more laxatives tomorrow but idk if I’ll have time because I’m pretty busy with appointments all day. Today I saw my primary care doctor and to make it short - had 4 seizures and yelled at him and cried for 2 hours from what we talked about. I love my doctor but he’s making me so mad. Anyways, I really hope I lose more tonight because tomorrow I have to go to Wendy’s with my grandma then go grocery shopping then my psychologist then 2 other appointments. It’ll be a long day and I’m not ready for it. I’m also debating going to do a php program starting Thursday but last time I went there it wasn’t helpful plus I don’t feel ready to recover. Even though part of me wants to idk how. Hello everyone 😊

So I’ve started this Instagram to share with you my journey through everything holistic relating to the mind, body and holistic living. I will be posting content ranging from psychology, nutrition, meditation, healing, holistic living, to general simplicities of daily life and a whole range of other topics. 
My journey started 7 years ago when I first came face to face with anxiety and agoraphobia since then finding ways in which mental illness can be healed holistically through the incorporation of therapy, nutrition, and complementary healing has formed and shaped what my life is today. 
The experience has driven me to a career in psychology and nutrition while practicing holistic living, i am aspiring to help, give hope, motivate and inspire others in similar situations.

Fui interpelada a pouco: " - Paula, para de ficar eufórica por uma pessoa que vc nem conhece". Quando eu falei que estava pulando em sentido obviamente figurado e muito feliz por algo de uma pessoa que ñ conheço, mas acompanho virtualmente e me identifico em várias coisas, e a mesma  está alcançando um sonho. 
A minha resposta foi seguida explicando que ñ preciso conhecer alguém de perto para sentir-me extasiada;  isso é empatia! 
Eu tenho esse costume de me encher por vitórias e vibrar,  e ñ é firula e elevação egoíca, os meus muito próximos sabem, dentre eles pacientes, alguns estão lendo aqui, né? rs 
Não somos felizes e maravilhosos o tempo todo, temos altos e baixos, mas tentem preservar isso: O vibrar com o universo e com o outro, seja ele quem for! Até se for aquela pessoa que não gosta, vai por mim o elevar-se dela é menos uma dor de cabeça para você. 
Aqui;  quero deixar um conselho: Se extasiem pela conquista do seu amigo, do tio da padaria, por alguém público, pelos ets;  isso é vida, isso é energia, isso é segurança.
Quando você exala essas coisas sua mente funciona melhor, o oxigênio flui melhor, seu coração bombeia melhor, vc libera endorfina, serotonina, dopamina e oxitocina... E sua vida se torna melhor. Vai por mim!

Se você não consegue, elege pessoas as quais vibra;  busque ajuda de um profissional psicólogo, porque em algum momento da vida isso lhe fará mal, organicamente, mentalmente, profissionalmente, etc.
Antes de tudo,  faça uma auto análise. Não é vergonha, a gente possui bloqueios mesmo ( todos nós) em várias situações, se ajude, se cuide, viva bem e leve!

Peace out grad school that I never plan on attending ✌🏼

It’s usually that time of the year where I am getting ready for school and dreading going to classes but not this year!! My plan after college was to apply for grad school, and continue going to school until I got my masters in school counseling. It’s the only way I thought I would be able to get a good job to support me.

Plans change though and that’s totally okay! You have to do what makes YOU happy. I am so thankful I decided to take a leap of faith and do something I am actually passionate about! I am out in the real world and I am actually surviving lol. This is a big shocker to me bc a year ago my life was in utter shambles and I was just going through the motions. Now I actually have motivation to get out of bed everyday & although I don’t have it completely figured out, I know I am way happier now than I would be if I was headed to back to school 🤘🏼

So for all my to be seniors or my peeps that graduated this past year, if you’re life isn’t figured out and you’re doing something completely different than planned.. I am right there with ya! You’re not alone & you never will be! I have a feeling we never really figure out this whole “adulting” thing and it’s more of a figure it out as we go kinda thing 😂

Whether we cry, yell, laugh or smile, we are all human.

It's so easy to forget that uncomfortable emotions are part of our human experience...they can't be avoided...at least not forever.

One of my tips from the "Let's Talk: Mental Health" vlog on Self-Compassion (LINK IN BIO), was to remember that all emotions are normal. While bottling them up may make you feel good at the time, this is unlikely to last forever. It's time to start normalising them.

Today I challenge you to allow yourself to feel an emotion you normally wouldn't. You can do this.

Last year, I made a radical discovery. I realized that I was wasting my weekends. Completely and utterly throwing most of my weekends away. I realized that I spent Monday through Friday working hard and living life with intention. I was diligent about using all the skills I teach here on Dr. Allison Answers. I spent a lot of energy, making sure I was getting the most out of my days. But then Friday night would roll around, and it’s like I just kind of quit. Give up, and put the controls on autopilot. I spent too much time on the couch, watched too many Netflix episodes, and ran too many errands.

This realization hit me hard after a Monday morning phone conversation with my little brother. He asked me what I’d done over the weekend, and I couldn’t remember a single meaningful thing. So I decided to do something, an experiment of sorts. I decided to do things differently. To push myself. To reclaim my weekends.

As we picked blueberries this year in Michigan, I thought about the last year, and what I’ve learned about taking charge of my weekends. In my practice, I help a lot of clients deal with interpersonal relationship problems, and I always stress the importance of TEACHING people in our lives how to love us, how to be considerate of us, what our needs and limits are. .

Many times in relationships, because we assume ourselves to be reasonable people, we also have the expectation that ALL OTHERS SHOULD THINK THE SAME. What that really means is this: everybody in this entire world, regardless of different upbringing, culture, and circumstances, SHOULD value, behave, and think the way that I do. Now that doesn’t sound quite as reasonable anymore does it? .

The truth is... everybody is guilty of this unreasonable expectation sometimes. We become aggravated or upset at others for not thinking the way we do — for not reading our minds. In fact, sometimes, we even TEST others by telling them we want the opposite of what is expected, because somehow, that would mean that “they really care.” Nope. All that means is that they were set up to fail, because the only way they could’ve succeeded in that situation was to go against what was asked. .

So Some food for though: not only is it OK to communicate your needs and expectations to others — it’s the also the most effective way of getting your needs met! It doesn’t mean that you will be guaranteed what you want, but it’s a heck of a lot better than becoming upset or asking for the opposite!

If you’re like most people, this task is really difficult (if not unthinkable)! Obviously it’s painful to think about someone you love dying, but does writing it down (or just thinking the thought) make it more likely to happen, even if you don’t want it to? Of course not! So why is it still difficult?

“Magical thinking” is the belief that your thoughts or wishes can influence the external world. Generally, we think about this in terms of childhood development (think, wishing on a star). Some cultures and religions also have beliefs that your thoughts and desires can influence outcomes - like praying. Broadly speaking, however, most would agree that having or writing a thought (without intention behind it) doesn’t make it more likely to occur.

Some magical thinking doesn’t indicate that someone has a mental health disorder. But when magical thinking gets out of control, which is common in many with OCD, it can significantly interfere with someone’s life. Imagine if you felt the same tension you felt in this exercise, but about any bad or immoral thought that pops into your mind. This, combined with the inability to tolerate uncertainty (for example, not knowing for sure if your thoughts can have consequences) can result in OCD sufferers going to great lengths to try not to think certain thoughts, or to try to undo them with certain rituals or behaviors. You may have felt uncomfortable doing this exercise (if could you do it!), but you probably didn’t feel the need to contact your loved one repeatedly to make sure you didn’t cause their death.

Takeaway: having OCD sucks. But is very treatable! Exposure and response prevention (ERP) is highly effective for managing OCD.

Just a few examples of common OCD symptoms include: fearing contamination (for example, avoiding touching objects with their hands, avoiding contaminated family members, engaging in hours of washing rituals), worrying about harming oneself or others (having mental images of stabbing one’s partner, fearing impulsively driving off a bridge, driving in circles repeatedly to ensure they didn’t hit someone with their car), forbidden thoughts (imagining having sex with a child, mental images of dead bodies).

Important note! People with OCD who have obsessive thoughts about violence or forbidden sexual acts are NOT more likely to engage in these behaviors!! In fact, they go to great lengths to try to stop these repetitive thoughts (including time-consuming rituals). Many people (including mental health providers, teachers, and clergy who are sought out for help by individuals with OCD) are not aware of this distinction and can contribute to stigma around this disorder. #stampoutstigma .

I got so excited with the content of the message that I literally jumped out of bed with excitement. Of course, I then had to read it to my hubby whom was wondering what was so amazing that it got me out of bed.
