Here is a little write-up of the day by Zakhari's kindy... #repost
Tēna kōutou te whānau,
Yesterday we celebrated South African Heritage day.
This is a special day where the country celebrates their culture and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions.
We were very lucky to have Zakhari's mum, Lucrezia, come in and share this day with us here at Petone Beach.
Dressed in traditional clothing, Lucrezia shared with us a bit about how special this day is to her and her whānau, the meaning behind their flag and the big "five" animals of South Africa.
We learnt a couple of words which were: - Doek – The head wrap is done by wrapping a doek around the head.
- Vetkoek – A deep fried bread which is called a fat cake in English and Mgwenya
in African languages.
Lucrezia demonstrated how to wrap the doek on this little girl. She was so empowered by the doek that she kept it on until Lucrezia and Zakhari left.
The children were then given the opportunity to pound (knead) the dough for the Vetkoek before experiencing the taste of one that Lucrezia had made early that morning.
Thank you so much Lucrezia and Zakhari for coming in and sharing your turangawaewae (place of belonging) with us.
The tamariki saw this learning experience as an opportunity to learn about what a celebration would look like in another country. They certainly enjoyed the doek with the majority of feedback “this is yummy!” =) Nei rā te mihi ki a kōutou kātoa.
