Good morning Sri Lanka. Happy Monday! Welcome to another beautiful week in October!
🌸
Here are a few photographs from one of my recent explorations to a favourite place on earth, upper Diyaluma Falls, as I returned after almost a decade! As we watched her cascade down and bathe in her divine waters, there we found this little monster of a plastic toothbrush swimming in one of the natural wonder pools of nature. I was instantly raged by this sight, however this has become nothing but a recurrence during my travels in Lanka over the years and I’m sure you can relate too. After camping the weekend, we brought back beer cans, plastic drink bottles, silli silli bags and plastic plates left behind by others.
🌿
What are we doing to this beautiful Isle of Ceylon, referred to the Pearl of the Indian Ocean?? Your residence isn’t just your home, Sri Lanka IS your home. Leave the politics away and look around you? We are watching Sri Lanka and her bio-diversify fade away and yet are we making enough effort to save Sri Lanka? This is not journey we can achieve alone, that can be achieved without you, for you are the voice of nature and we sincerely hope you will advice the next person you see using or throwing away plastic or any kind of waste. Sustainable travel is as important as sustainable living and it a part of our lives.
🙏🏾
If you are also looking at changing from a plastic toothbrush, to a plastic FREE toothbrush, we at Green Choice Lanka offers a whole rainbow range of Bamboo toothbrushes with bamboo bristles, which makes it 100% biodegradable. Do contact us for orders.
💃🏽
And remember, if we don’t protect Sri Lanka, who will? As Arthur C. Clarke says, Sri Lanka is a little bit of everything! 🇱🇰
Trivia - Diyaluma Falls is 220 m high and the second highest waterfall in Sri Lanka and 361st highest waterfall in the world.

Don’t we all just love our yoghurt? Love it so much that we irresponsibly throw the cup and spoon away!! Leave away the cup, do you grab that rascal of a tiny spoon with it every.single.time you buy a yoghurt cup?? Or did the cashier of the store automatically put in in our bags along with each container of yoghurt and you negligently let them??? Why do we need a disposable (single use) plastic spoon, when most of the time we consume the yoghurt at home and can use our own spoons??
🆘
Did you know that between the yoghurt manufacturers in Sri Lanka, over a 100 million yoghurts are produced annually.
😱
The yogHURT is HURTING and polluting our environment and in turn hurting us!
⁉️‼️
We at Green Choice are here to guide you with tips for simplified lifestyle changes, which will immensely contribute towards creating a sustainable Sri Lanka. 💗
Do you want to be part of the problem or solution?? 🐳
Think a minute... Make that change and influence the people around you, as you REFUSE the little yoghurt spoon. REDUCE
the number of small yoghurt containers you purchase and switch to the bigger containers and REUSE these items in the process.
💚
This spoon I found recently on the beach of Vakarai didn’t look more than a few weeks old, amidst the many other disposable plastic items lying around! 🥄
And let’s not question as to why someone threw away the plastic spoon, but be responsible and pick it up!! 🚮
Whilst we request the manufacturers to look into a sustainable packaging in being environmentally responsible, let’s unity and protect Sri Lanka duty and REFUSE the yoghurt spoon and RECYCLE the yoghurt cup. You may ask why both the cup AND the spoon can’t be recycled, however recycling should be considered at a last option.

Repost from @srilankan.ness using @RepostRegramApp - Whoa!!!! 💗 What on earth is this and where it this? This ladies and gentleman is the Taprobane East Wreck in the deep blue waters off the shores of Colombo in the magical world under the sea, in our SEA LANKA!
🌊
The dolphins and whales you may haven experienced in Kalpitiya, Mirissa, Trinco etc are not the only marine life that exists beneath. The world you have seen in the Little Mermaid animated movie DOES exist, for there are formations of corals, the flowers of the sea, variety of fish from lion to puffer fish to dolphins to whales, for they are the butterflies, the dragonflies, the birds, leopards and elephants of the sea. 🧜🏽‍♀️
As Dharshana Jayawardene, founder/editor of www.divesrilanka writes, perfection is an elusive goal. Yet in the far outer reaches of the deep blue Taprobane East waters, we believe we have discovered it.
🚢
This is one of the most beautiful ship wrecks we have seen. Standing upright on white sand, the derelict remains of this ship is about 20 meters in length.

Like many other ship wrecks in colombo there are no dark holes to penetrate. Just the skeletal remains providing an oasis for vast amounts of fish life. Its a simple ship wreck. Yet its a scenic place of heavenly proportions.

Don’t underestimate this little island in the Indian ocean – Sri Lanka offers a tremendous amount of wildlife and biodiversity for its size. 💗

🇱🇰 In a country where humans and elephants have co-existed for centuries, in spite of being the only beasts in the wild that shares a cultural and religious bond with Sri Lanka, with even the casket of the venerated tooth relic of Lord Buddha being carried by one of its kind in the annual Randholi perahera along with the rest of the herd draped in striking colours to give a world renowned show, where we have use them for labour, have tourists ride on them, the human-elephant conflict rages on.
In wildlife jargon, we proudly talk about “the gathering” where once a year, the Asian elephants of Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks congregate for what is known as “The Gathering”. The two parks, though separate, are next to each other and divided by the “elephant corridor” jungle that stands between them. 🐘
As we thrive to protect our elephants which is of great value to our bio-diversity and it’s eco-systems, which is turn is also booming our tourist industry and supporting the economy is at high risk, here we share the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society (WNPS) talk, where Dr. Sumith Pilapitiya, the former Director General of the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) who we have utmost respect for, who will us through the Human Elephant Conflict through years of research, processes of mitigation and development and invite you to join this invaluable talk on the 18th of October. Shopping for groceries at your neighbourhood supermarket? Did you rip bag after bag for each fruit and vegetable item you bought to be weighed for the invoice sticker to be pasted on? That’s an average of 10 bags for each supermarket visit!!!
🆘🍉🍍🍠🥕🛒
Here’s an idea. Carry a set of reusable bags with you and insert each item into your bag and get the supermarket staff to waste the sticker on it.
💚✅
Here’s to creating a disposable plastic free Sri Lanka together.

Visiting National Parks is not just about a leopard sighting or only of the Fauna! Sri Lanka and her natural bio-diversity is a gift of the nature gods and one of the richest in the world! Yes that’s right, this tiny little little of ours.
☘️
The next time you visit a National Park, don’t just see it, feel it... it’s about the landscape itself and the feeling of the wind of the wilderness, the sound of trees of nature at its best as it gives us so much energy. 💗
A bit about Fauna and Flora -Flora is plant life; fauna refers to animals. Fauna derives from the name of a Roman goddess, but the handiest way to remember flora and fauna is that "flora" sounds like flowers, which are part of the plant world, and fauna sounds like "fawn," and fawns are part of the animal kingdom.
💚
This photograph was taken as we were approaching Aakasa Chaithya (elephant rock) in the kingdom of Yala, the most popular park and second largest in Sri Lanka with the highest density of leopards in the world.

A favourite escape in our beautiful little Isle is to the highlands of Lanka, for she’s our wild mountains...
🏞🌨🌈❤️
The reason to call it Knuckles is because the mountain range consists of five peaks in itself, that looks like the knuckles of a clenched fist when seen from Kandy area. The Sinhalese name for this mountainous area is " Dumbara Mitiyawatha " which means " The Misty Vally " that makes me sing and dance to a favourite Sinhala song, Dumbara Mitiyawatha Peththe, sundara gammaneka madde... (of course I have no such talent in singing, but we Sri Lankan’s can forever dance our wattakka dance and of course baila comes to us naturally... 😍
💗
Isn’t she a beauty and isn’t she worth the protection? Now tell us about your favourite escapes in Sri Lanka... 🇱🇰🌳

Thank god it’s Friday huh? What plans tonight? Drink with friends or heading out of town for the weekend with family perhaps? Aren’t we blessed to have such a lifestyle.
💚
Today, I stumbled upon this old lady pushing her CMC cart across the road, who seemed exhausted at 7.30am, as we start our day in joy as it’s the weekend! Stopping the car, I offered some water and money to buy herself some food. She was almost in tears as she said that she had come from afar without a tea, breakfast or even a drop of water, as she continued to pick up “our” plastic bottle we negligently threw away.
😰
This is one of many cases, as I recently came across another CMC lady who we offered water to, who said that she had asked for a glass of water from a few houses and explained how they turned around and shut the gate or spoke a few nasty words towards these “low class” level of people as they say!!😡
🇱🇰
Let me now ask you question my fourth grade teacher asked our class back in the day. Who do you think is more important? A doctor or a person cleaning the road? Most of us, including myself answered “doctor”, to which my teacher replied, “wrong, they are both equally important! What if there’s no one to clean your city? Would you like to live in a garbage dump? As she continued, I remember that very moment sitting on my little pink chair reflecting on how I had always empathised with them, but it was that very moment I started valuing them, was for they were our clean city heroes and human beings!
🙏🏾
So my message today is a humble request to please think twice before you pick up that disposable plastic item, as there are many eco friendly solutions and simple lifestyle changes such as carrying your reusable bag and bottle with you. And even if you have no choice, bring it back and send it for recycling as a last option and let’s help them keep the city clean in minimising and appreciating their work.
🚮
This lady or gentleman in orange is someone’s mother, someone’s father, sibling or child! So take that minute and offer them a glass of water, some food and even an old cap. Be kind.always.🧡

As she continued, I remember that very moment sitting on my little pink chair reflecting on how I had always empathised with them, but it was that very moment I started valuing them, was for they were our clean city heroes and human beings! 🙏🏾 So my message today is a humble request to please think twice before you pick up that disposable plastic item, as there are many eco friendly solutions and simple lifestyle changes such as carrying your reusable bag and bottle with you. And even if you have no choice, bring it back and send it for recycling as a last option and let’s help them keep the city clean in minimising and appreciating their work. 🚮 This lady or gentleman in orange is someone’s mother, someone’s father, sibling or child! So take that minute and offer them a glass of water, some food and even an old cap. Be kind.always.🧡 #SriLanka  #ProtectSriLanka  #OnePeopleOneNation  by Green Choice Lanka
Here you have the king of our jungles chewing on a polythene bag⁉️ 👑🆘
🐆
Did you know that Sri Lanka (Yala National Park) has the highest density of leopards in the world!!
🐾
This photograph was taken at the beautiful Wilpattu National Park, the largest National Park in Sri Lanka and the second largest in Asia!! What a wow factor!
🌳
Being a wildlife and nature buff, there have been times we have cleaned up Wilpattu collectively with wildlife groups or on a random trip with friends where I would bug the rest to join my mini clean up (in areas permitted to get off). However those were only temporary solutions, that we went to the extent to stick signage boards with the approval of the authorities....
🐆
Scientifically known as the Panthers Pardus Kotiya, this elusive creature is a subspecies native to Sri Lanka has been and been classified as endangered on the IUCN (Inter Union for Conservation of Nature) red list! Are we willing to make a choice in protecting and conserving what’s left of them to proudly showcase to the world instead of having our future generations look through picture books of the extinct Sri Lankan Leopard.
💚
Well then, this is yet another reason to stay away from this monstrous disposable (single use) plastic bag! Take your reusable bag, bring back your biscuit packets and influence others around you to do same, for we are remarkably lucky to be born in a country such as ours.

Did you know that the first toothbrush you ever used as a toddler is still somewhere out there? Or perhaps a fish had eaten bits of it and who knows, someone may have consumed it while having scrumptious seafood on the beach of Trincomalee! 🐠
So let me ask you this question, how often do you change your plastic toothbrush? Every month, once in two or perhaps three months. Now join me in this simple calculation.
❌
Assume you use 6 toothbrushes each year and multiple that by your age. Assuming you are 27, here’s the calculation 🔢
6 toothbrushes each year x 27 years = 162
⁉️
Now let’s extend it to our family and friends and perhaps your friend on Facebook/Instagram. Now comment below with the approximate number! That runs into hundreds of thousands, millions!!!
🆘
Now let’s take a moment to absorb this and think of you are willing to continue on your plastic waste journey contributing towards the downfall on the environment or would you like a solution? 🌳
Well look no further, as we at Green Choice are here to help you, help the environment, our resplendent Isle of Lanka and her natural biodiversity. 🇱🇰💚☘️
So worry not, we are about to reveal your plastic free toothbrush solution next! 🔜

The BIG 5 - #2 ⭐️
There you are cruising along in the jungle, enjoying the breeze of the Wilderness and suddenly your safari jeep stops… you’re curiously looking in the direction your guide is pointing at to find in a distant a black fluffy ball. You look again and whoosh, there you find a sloth bear rise up on its feet plucking palu fruits straight from the tree. As it feasts away, we take our cameras out, the big guns, small guns and little ones too and click to our hearts content.
🐻
You must remember to keep a distant and respect their natural habitat and at the same time to allow other jeeps to share this special moment with you, instead of racing towards the bear. This way, you ought to have a better show, instead of the animal disappearing into the thick jungle.
🌳
Scientifically known as the Melursus ursinus inornatus, the Sri Lankan Sloth Bear is an omnivorous species that depends heavily on the forest for survival. Sloth bears have a long coat despite the relatively warm environment in which the species is found and it protects them from being bitten by their favorite food — insects! 🐜

Welcome to the world of the “Disposable Plastic Demon”, a monster created by you and I, bringing us and our loved ones far more damage than ever imagined through the environmental pollution! 🆘
❓
A straw now comes by default with the juice or cocktail we order and sometimes with the can or bottle of coke⁉️ If you were to count the number of straws used in your lifetime, how much would it be? Countless right? Well, those countless plastic straws from your childhood is still roaming around in the sea or perhaps it was consumed by a fish you had for dinner last week!
🌿🇱🇰
I am making a choice to change and remind myself to say “no straw please” as the time I give my drink order and in the process stare my friends down too and guess what, they love me more for reminding them!😬. Are you with me? Shall we beat this together and just say “No Straw Please” and influence everyone around us to do same. This is OurHome.OurLoveOurPriority

*Nature Interpretation Programmes (NIP) for jeep drivers and guides to National Parks* organised by the @federationofenvironmentalorgsl (FEO - SL) in collaboration with the Department of Wildlife & Conservation (DWC) 🌳
In recent years the reputation of the National Parks of Sri Lanka, especially that of the Yala National Park (Block I) has been severely dented, both locally and Internationally, due to the uncontrolled and undisciplined behaviour of the jeep drivers and guides who take visitors into the Parks.
🐾
With the active collaboration of the Department Of Wildlife & Conservation (DWC), the Federation of Environmental Organizations (FEO) with the assistance of noted conservationists and environmental experts, compiled a Nature Interpretation Programme (NIP) specifically aimed at educating jeep drivers and tourist guides on the natural wonders of the fauna and flora of the National Parks which is the source of their livelihoods and other matters.
🦋
The first programme was successful held in June at Wilpattu National Park, (crowned as the Queen of the Jungles in Lanka, as the largest National park 👸🏽), under the scrutiny of the Deputy Director of the DWC (Planning, ICT and Law Enforcement), Ranjan Marasinghe, and of Chandani Wilson, Deputy Director of Visitor Services. In total, 45 jeep drivers and guides actively participated in the programme, which was held over two days. Special note of thanks to the Jeep Drivers’ Associations of Wilpattu who readily accepted the necessity for such a training and encouraged their members to participate. 🌼
The presenters included Dr. Sumith Pilapitiya, former Director General of the DWC, Nishad Wijethunga (Committee Member of SLAITO), Kithsiri Gunawardena, @namalkamalgoda and Rahula Perera. Each participant received a Certificate of Participation from FEO, as authorised by SLAITO.
🍃
We would also like to thank our sponsors SLAITO, @backofbeyond_srilanka, Quickshaws, Uga Escapes, @governorscampsrilanka and Backwaters for their generous contribution! 🙏🏾

And so the long weekend is here. 💃🏽 Let me remind you to be a little responsible and create sustainable travel amongst yourselves, family and friends. Let’s be realistic, plastic can’t be eliminated from ones lives overnight, however using reusable plastic ware for trips, instead of the one time use (disposable) plastic makes a world of a difference. This pink cup seen in the picture I’m sipping my coffee in and a dozen more has been with me and my travel buddies for over half a decade and still going strong 💪🏽. Today, this beautiful park of fauna and flora is being suffocated by the large number of vehicles entering the park, disturbing wildlife in their natural habitat, mainly due to the violation of park rules. 🌸
Would you like to be a wildlife & nature warrior? A protector of our parks? In that case, instead waiting for a government regulation, the next time you visit Yala, advice your jeep driver and others to keep a fair distance from animals, ask your friends to be quiet and observe nature, to feel its presence and energy, to take the biscuit packet and bottles without throwing it into the park. One step at a time.
🍃
Love and respect nature, for it will respect you back! 🐆

Dangerous Health Effects of Home Burning of Plastics and Polythene.
🔥
Most people who burn their plastic domestic waste do not realize how harmful this practice is to their health and to the environment. Current research indicates that backyard-burning of waste is far more harmful to our health than previously thought. It can increase the risk of heart disease, aggravate respiratory ailments such as asthma and cause rashes, nausea,or headaches, damages in the nervous system, kidney or liver, in the reproductive and development system.
❌🚫 What people can do?
🌿
Seperate plastic waste from other waste. Do not burn any plastics in your yard or house.
🌿
Avoid in particular do not purchase goods packed in PVC packaging, which generates dioxins when burned.
🌿
Reduce Plastic- Buy products that can be reused or refilled (glass and metal containers)
🌿
Compost - Yard clippings, leaves, and food can be easily composted in your backyard.
🌿
Hand over your recycling material to a proper recycling plant.
♻️
In Sri Lanka, burning plastic is illegal and can be fined up to Rs. 10,000/- and face 2 years in prison! ✅

A favourite book of recent times that had me nostalgic, I started reading it for the second time. It is not just live music that sings to my soul, but the music of nature which connects to my soul... 💛
Leave alone using eco conscious alternative products, why is it that some don’t care about the earth we stand on, the earth that protects us, to blindly throw away that plastic cup, bottle, instead of into a bin? Let’s start today, for a better tomorrow! 🌿
...And travel... explore Sri Lanka, as she’s magic Lanka! This will further make you understand the importance of letting go of your toxic relationship with plastic! And this book that had me awe stuck at times with the feeling of nostalgia, I guarantee will help you rejuvenate to Sri Lanka and her surreal, but yet so real bio-diversity. 💗 ☘️

I received a direct message as to why I love Sri Lanka and so in love with nature, so I thought my answer should be portrayed through a photograph of a weekend escapade to Diyaluma Falls, where I camped at upper Diyaluma bathing in the divine waters, curiously watching where she cascades down to.🌻🌿 We are all caught up in the rat race, that we forget the sparkle of this little resplendent Isle of ours... The Isle I pledge to protect together with you. Look outside, explore her... Sri Lanka and her natural biodiversity is MAGIC to your soul! ☘️💗

♻️ Some of you may wonder if this is only a time clean up and what the purpose of a one time cleanup? Here's the answer... No, it's not a one time cleanup 🙂 Also, whilst we are planning long term solutions with the support of everyone around us, it's necessary that we keep our country clean (after all this is the mess we created) and set an example on others to PICK UP UP & PITCH IN, especially for the children of the future. So join the wave and let's share a little love for OUR Sri Lanka and her Greenness... 🌿🌼🇱🇰

Day 2
Tip of the Day for a game of Angels & Demons * STOP BUYING ONE TIME USE PLASTIC BOTTLES*

It’s crazy when you think that the result of your single thirst quench can linger up to 10 times longer than you will. And if you only think of yourself, well, those plastic bottles can be leeching their toxic chemicals right into your body.

Simple fix! Don’t be lazy and selfish. Take a little extra time to fill yourself a reusable bottle of water. 🙈

Another hidden, and quite large waterfall, near the Five Knuckles peaks forest reserve. It has some ridiculously steep edges that we had to navigate down using sambar deer trails and holding onto tree branches. It was worth it though, because the little valley felt like a separate world in itself 😄
