Ever heard a human baby or any baby animal do that one, deep, sigh of a breath when they are drifting off to sleep? It’s a magical moment for parents and caregivers everywhere and you can experience it too! Thing is, childhood isn’t always easy, what with all the grown ups telling kids how to live their lives. Sometimes child’s pose can also be challenging. Instead of avoiding it or cursing your lack of flexibility, try some pillows or bolsters between your bum and legs and/or under your torso. Sometimes you need a parent to tell you to wear pants in public so people don’t avoid you and sometimes we need a little help from our prop friends to get the benefits of a pose. Props are NOT just for newbies & obstacles on the mat✌Go ahead- grab that block, strap, bolster, etc!
I think it's common for yogis to feel like props are for beginners or maybe that they just don't need them because they are capable of doing the pose without them. Been there 👍 but have since opened my eyes and my practice has truly benefited.
Props are not just a crutch, they create support, ease, and stability. They ALSO empower yogis to experiment! They can greatly enhance basic and advanced postures by lengthening, establishing immediate balance for further exploration in postures, and inspires greater opening.
I love props, especially for this restorative, yin pose, Mandukasana (Frog Pose)
Frog pose promotes hip opening, improves abduction, aids in digestion, and reduces menstrual cramping.
How to: From table position, walk knees out as wide as comfortable. Lower down onto forearms, or props! Giving into gravity on your blocks or bolster (or both!) allows greater opening to occur. Draw hips back towards heels for increased hip opening and inner thigh stretch. Knees, hips, and ankle joints should be at 90 degree angles. Breathe. Hold for 3-5 minutes before gently releasing pose.
