When I look at photos of myself in yoga postures, I get painfully hyper-critical. “You should have bent your front knee more. Why isn’t your back leg straight?...and on and on” But why? ✨
Why do I demand perfection from myself when I know that perfection isn’t real? Who cares how straight my leg is as long as I’m on my mat? Then sometimes I say “progress over perfection” and have to remind myself that progress isn’t important either. ✨
What’s important to me on the day to day is effort. If I have the energy, I put in the effort. That’s what really matters, not what’s caught on camera. Judging myself harshly wont change what my legs are doing, it’ll only make harder for me to get on the mat, and that is the only thing that matters to me. ✨
Couldn’t be more proud of my babies for volunteering an afternoon of their time to giving back. Today they decorated boxes that will be filled with bags of school supplies for children in underserved communities and did so with joy and excitement. 🙏🏽❤️🙏🏽 With all the “self care” talk being popular right now, it’s equally as important to remember to give back!

We hear a lot of talk about self care these days and while that is absolutely essential, giving back to underserved and marginalized communities is equally as important. Today #melaninandyogababies participated in some community service work. They decorated boxes that will be used to deliver packages of school supplies to communities in need. We couldn’t be prouder of these kids excitement to give back, a true yogic principle.
375 bags of school supplies will be delivered throughout the #rva area to local children in need.
Thank you to VCU Center on Health Disparities for providing these little people an opportunity to get involved and give back to the community! You rock!

Yoga is not just a physical exercise. It is a way of life, a way to love yourself and others, and a way to combine mind, body and spirit. In the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali (foundational text of yoga) we are prescribed the 8 limbs of Yoga as a path of enlightenment (Samadhi). The first of these 8 limbs, or steps, is called Yamas, which is a set of moral restraints. The first of the 5 Yamas is called Ahimsa (nonviolence), which means do no harm to yourself or to others (this is sometimes a yogi's reason for becoming vegan).
As mentioned in 'Yoga Journal' by Linda Sparrow, Yoga offers "a path to a calmer mind, healthier body, and a more open heart". Melanin & Yoga’s, Dietary and Diabetic Nurse Educator @iam0106 joined in with the @rvahostel and #rvaforpuertorico to lead a Puerto Rican themed “Cooking as a Second Language” class in efforts to help raise awareness of the culture, history and current conditions of Puerto Rico within the Richmond, Virginia community. A interactive and educational fun way to help raise awareness for diverse underserved cultures.
The diversity and sincere interest by the participants was heartwarming and provides hope for humanity. The connections made, the positive energy, the heartfelt love and caring spirit was everything!
It’s never about exclusivity, but instead inclusivity; not just tolerance but acceptance and love which was sincerely felt in this room. Thank you to all the participants who made it a success.

'2minute noodles' healthy style - but it takes more like 10mins 😏
2minute noodles are what I crave when Im feeling tired, homesick or in early pregnancy! So this is a great healthier version to pack in some nutrients. (also found it a great success with #fussytoddlers )
Perfect quick lunch or dinner (especially when you get home later after a yoga class). recipe:
organic egg noodles
1 grated carrot
1/4 cabbage finely chopped
1-2 cubes organic veg stock
2 cups water
1 tbsp chopped parsley
1 tbsp cameline oil (high in omega 3)
1 tbsp nutritional yeast
grated cheese (optional)
Boil water. Add stock, grated carrots and chopped cabbage. Cook until vegetables are tender. Add noodles, cook per packet instruction. Take off heat. Stir through cameline oil, nutritional yeast and parsley. Serve. Top with grated cheese or more nutritional yeast flakes.
