Our students have journeyed to India, crossing mountain ranges and oceans to arrive here, in India, the birthplace of yoga.
Here the journey doesn’t end, but rather takes new paths as we close the eyes, delve deep into meditation and engage in life transforming practices that have taken us all on a tour of our inner realms that determines the quality of our actions.
It is our choice to be joyful, but first we must get us to a place where we can make that choice.
Yesterday we got there and this experience will always be with us and the students.
Along the way we ventured into Rishikeshs lush jungle and washed off layers of both emotional and physical heat. Fresh and full of love we are embarking on the last few days of this year’s yoga retreat!

If you’ve explored yoga, you might have come across the koshas; the layers or sheaths of the body that make up our physical & subtle anatomy. The koshas are a nice idea. Contained within them is a recognition that we’re more ephemeral than our flesh & bones. But they remain conceptual until we put an experience of them into our body,so here goes:
Annamaya kosha: Our physical body: skin, muscle, bone, temperature, weight. Feel your weight & notice how it gives you stability. That stability creates a container inside which your experience can unfold. Bring more of annamaya kosha online by letting go of unconscious physical tension. Accept any sensations you find. Let go of the idea that only obvious sensations (& by extension, obvious experiences) are meaningful. As you open to these subtleties, pranamaya kosha (next)will become more accessible.
Feel the expansion & contraction of each breath & consider the force behind that breath, drawing it in & releasing it. This is pranamaya kosha; the realm of breath, prana, nadis & chakras.Notice how, as the breath moves, the mind moves too; how, when you’re distracted your breathing becomes irregular & how, when your thoughts enter the realm of clinging or aversion, your muscles tense in response. Conversely, notice how, when you soften the body, your thoughts & feelings soften too. This is because pranayama kosha is related to manomaya kosha, the realm of thought & emotion.
Now notice that when your body softens, your sensitivity (both internal & external) heightens. You become aware of the ways the body knows that the mind doesn’t fully understand. This is vijnanamaya kosha; the realm of wisdom & intuition. When you connect with the places of mystery inside you, you experience flashes of insight, moments of intuition & the quiet but unshakeable feeling that you’re connected with everything else in the universe.
Universal connection feels good. Pay attention to its ‘good feeling’ & allow it to expand. Recognise it as a wellspring of inner joy which, says yoga, is your essential nature. This is anandamaya kosha; the realm of bliss. And the tools of yoga are simply a means to get at that which is already there ❤️
This little breath practice is one of the simplest yet richest ways I know to bring me into a beautiful state of flow.
I have been using it for probably around 10 years and teach it regularly in my classes. This week with numerous friends I have been talking about what flow is, how to access it, what effects it can weave into our lives.
Inspired in part by @wemovemagazine podcast with the absolutely lovely Rich Husseiny where he discusses pivotal, heart breaking moments in his own life which helped him turn things around, I put together some words on what it means to me. It’s often a missing link for people I think, we want it but are not sure how to go about getting it. We try too hard, life is depleting, our inner dialogue is overwhelming, everything is a struggle.
4 months ago I received some news about my ongoing health issues which could have taken me under, instead I used it to slipstream into a state of flow and have stayed there since for the most part, kind of floating, being held by this web of consciousness, an awake state of simplicity. It’s been beautiful.
In fact more than that magical things have happened again and again, opportunities, little epiphanies, work has been sweet, relationships much easier, guides have appeared in my life and the best yet I received news that all is okay. Magic. Or is it?
Being in a state of flow IS magic but we can all access it if we know the tools to use AND understand how the brain works - key. Remember the last time you were wholly absorbed by something, time just disappeared, you lost all sense of your connection to the body somehow, the struggle stopped. .
Today I’m sharing a little bit of my practice. On the days when things feel hard and going inwards to the peace is somewhat challenging. I love using mala beads and a mantra/chant even just something as simple as OM to get my thoughts to release and turn my attention inwards.
Plus when your mala beads are beautiful and made with so much love and intention, you feel it when you use them. My amazing friend @chantmalas creates beautiful pieces. I’ve watched her make them and all I can say is that they are full of love.
This week has been hard, harder than I ever imagined and I am having to dig deep to release what is coming up. It’s also important to know that you can and should ask for help. Asking for help is a huge part of self-love and self-care. Sometimes you just need someone to listen to you, give you a hug, to remind you that you are just at the very beginning and you need to continue.
Releasing Radiate Your Glow as a course has been amazing, challenging, and a huge learning curve for me. I’m grateful to all my amazing friends and everyone here in this community that has supported me & continues to do so.
I am reminded daily that this is just the beginning and if I keep showing up, despite what may feel like a set back in my head, others will show up too.
So in those moments where things feel challenging and you may want to run and hide, ask for help. Do things that will help draw you back inwards and connect you to the peace in your heart. At the end of the day we are all love and peace and really all of this is simply an illusion, it’s a tiny moment in the lifetime of our souls.
