Day five of and we focus on the throat chakra, also known as Vissuddha (purification). Its element is sound, purpose is communication and creativity, and basic rights are to speak and be heard.
My throat chakra has been quite damaged over the years. I’ve always had a lot of difficulty finding my own voice, as I’ve realized that much of my life has been encompassed by others’ wants and needs. Slowly, I’m peeling back the layers of my own being, and my own desires. I know what I value. Regardless of the “popularity” of my opinions and beliefs, I am proud that they are my truth.

I had lunch with a fellow therapist-pal a bit ago, and she almost choked on her Spring Roll when I told her that I haven’t been to therapy for myself in years. She strongly encouraged me to start a search again, and she kindly reminded me that I need to practice what I preach. Can we say ah-ha moment? How can I be presenting the best version of me...when I don’t sit on the other side of the room once in a while? And so today, I made an appointment. I felt super vulnerable reaching out, which reminded me how my clients must feel when they first reach out to me (see, already learning). How can I preach that #therapyiscool when I only see the act from the chair? Time for me to sit on the couch! And sharing this is also a bit awkward for me (though it shouldn’t be!), but how can I also preach to #endthestigma , if I’m not actively proud of my decision to spill the guts and search the soul?! So here’s my attempt to remind you...take care of yourself and reach out for help, and don’t be one bit ashamed about that! We ALL need time on the couch. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Yesterday was the first day in God knows how long that I didn't shed a single tear. And then I woke up today and I couldn't get out of bed, feeling consumed in my thoughts, and the tears wouldn't stop. You can think I'm being dramatic, but what I want people to take away from this is that mental health is an every day job. You have to strive for positivity and happiness no matter what your mind tells you or how the world makes you feel. All that matters is how you make yourself feel. You have to make the decision to get out of bed, to be kind to yourself, to have patience with those you love who may not fully understand, because believe me they want to help you... We can't keep telling ourselves "Once I have this, everything will be better." "Once I make more money all my problems will be solved." "Once I'm in a relationship I will be happy." Because everything begins and ends with YOU FIRST. We have to stop giving outside things the power to control how we feel on the inside. No matter the circumstances, no matter the excuses to be unhappy, we MUST find the positive in each and every situation. When you start to do that your life will change in ways you thought were impossible. Monday, winter - perfect time for an Ashtangi story. ⠀
I remember several months ago, I found some characteristic bruisers on my lower leg. Why characteristic? Well, Ashtangi are pretty serious about backbends. In Mysore, an Indian town where Ashtanga Yoga Research institute is, people talk about backhands more than English men are supposed to talk about the weather.
There’s one particular thing which in ashtanga we call “catching”. I’ve added a picture for you in the carousel so you know what’s the buzz. So while in “catching” one holds legs like the whole life depends on them. Obviously you might get bruisers of a special shape and particular location.
They could be even a measurement unit 📏the higher the better, the cooler the stronger. But mine were way to high. I knew for sure that my backbend not there yet. Where did the bruise come from than? Another Ashtanga mystery- was my final verdict.
Until a couple of weeks later an answer came right at the end of the practice. Enormously concentrated, I was holding my calf with all the strength drastically trying to put leg behind my head. Needless to mention that my hands were at the very same “mysterious spots”. “Eka pada till my fingers blue” I chocked silently to myself.
Finishing the year strong with the #chekacademy ! #scientificbacktraining was a beast of a course and I’m so glad it was. After 25 yrs in the fitness industry I haven’t lost any passion for what I do. If anything I’m more passionate than ever and I always think I can be a better Coach, Human and make a bigger difference. My decision to apply for the CHEK Academy via the @chekinstitute is proving to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made...and I’m only 4 months into a 3 year program! .
Along with becoming an @xptlife Coach this year and continuing my education with @ncepfitness , who’s always had my back, I feel like I’m evolving and becoming a more well rounded coach and can help more people breathe better, move better, perform better, get out of pain and live their dreams! I’m not getting any younger either so I’ll definitely be practicing what I preach. If you know me you know I do. .

The quest for the perfect vegan ramen continues. I almost have enough raw materials to make my own stock, but if that’s not your thing, I’d recommend the @engine2diet brand. I’ve also become a big fan of @lotusfoods ramen this winter season.
My ramen usually consists of finely diced onion, garlic, and ginger. Sometimes I’ll add carrot (like this ramen pictured). I also like scallions. Once they cook down, I add cremini mushrooms and sautéed until they get soft. Then add the broth and simmer it down on medium heat until the broth reduces by at least HALF. The flavors are so concentrated at that point and your home will smell amazing. Garnish with cilantro, avocado - don’t skip this step, it really makes all the difference.
Does anyone have any other tips/tricks with ramen?? Should I add miso? Chilies? Kombu? Tofu? Soy sauce? Sprouts? Coconut milk?
Hope all of you enjoyed a nice weekend spending time with family and close friends. It’s crazy how fast time goes by, in less than four weeks it will be time for us to begin our New Year! .

We immediately fell back into the routine. We completed 17 miles of running and had 2 hours of great conversation. All done before our families were even awake 😀💪
How did we get this done?? We set goals and crushed them. We used SMART goals.
1) Specific: 6, 8, 3 miles in 3 days
2) Measurable: Time and distance was laid out.
3) Attainable: We’ve put in the work to know it was possible.
4) Relevant: We’re training for multiple upcoming races.
5) Time bound: 3 days to get specific mileage in.

❄️ While stuffing my head with endless Advanced phrases and being always pushed for time, I find myself extremely pleased with what I’m doing professionally. Teaching is my air and the choice I can’t help enjoying, both due to flexible schedule and constant flow of new people. “Suddenly I see this is what I want to be”. I see how much I love people and children. Though it wasn’t always this way. When I’m down they bring me up just cause this is so rewarding to invest in what you love. I’ve never thought that work can turn into such a deep affection.

Pretty proud of myself today. The holidays have had me jamming sweets, bread, and dark beer into my face and I can definitely feel it. I was feeling frisky this morning so I came up with my own rendition of our "SWAT Test" and smashed it.
In kit (about +50lbs) for time:
25 weighted lunges (each side)
25 single hand kb swings (each arm)
25 kb swings
200 push ups
1.5 mi run
After several shoulder dislocations and separations, I've been working on shoulder strength and stability for quite a long time now. I was able to do 5 strict pullups in my kit today which was a HUGE milestone for me. Total time for me was 1:04:37

🌙 Our behavior when life is most difficult teaches our children most profoundly. We either demonstrate to them that emotions are good enough reasons to be rude, frantic, substance seeking or self indulgent, or we show them how to stay present, face stress peacefully, how to walk gracefully with heartache and how to Love when angry. 🌙
I was reminded yesterday, when dealing with an impossible situation that has no happy remedy, that my daughter is learning from me each moment and does not know how far I’ve come. The childhood struggles I overcame and poor choices and habits as a young adult that I constantly work to leave behind do not impress her when I am on the verge of panic or reaching for chocolate or wine to calm my nerves. Likewise, when she hears me (or her father), verbally flipping the bird at another driver, she is absorbing the lesson “Methods to Deal with Difficult Feelings.” 🌙 The fact that we meditate and donate, serve, and preach compassion might moderate an angry outburst’s affect, but the lesson that emotions can trump values still sits there in her psyche waiting to be retrieved when her own temper flares or a stressful event overwhelms her. 🌙
I would *never* advocate ignoring or suppressing feelings. They are information and art’s birthplace, they connect us. But they can divide us too, and the ability to be SELF- reflective, observe our feelings, and choose our actions is a uniquely human gift (as far as we know). .
I will do better today to walk my talk.🌙

To understand your mind with bad nutrition is like pretending your sane in a insane mental institute for the critically damaged....you will literally vibrate and manifest out what you put into your gut ......think about it people if its not a natural source then what the fuck are you eating it for?....food is a billion dollar industry which has been modified to be addictive to the senses in your brain and its slowly dumbing society down to the point we think a plant based diet isn't as good as the research shows or its just some mumbo jumbo shit that those ancient ones talked about....but thats all apart of the social conditioning we as society are taught and function under ...constantly your subconscious mind is hammered with subliminal messages to keep you consuming the addictive tasty processed shit.....
I dare you to fast for 3 days just have water and see if you notice anything if you want to raise your conscious awareness to your reality you want for yourself then start making small changes to what the fuck you eat.
First ever half marathon done ✅
What better way to do it than on your own, without proper preparation and around midday in Dubai ☀️ Longest run I’ve done up till now was 16km, and that’s 10 years ago. Felt a lot of pain in my left hip and my right hip flexor from around the 5km mark, so pace dropped from there (the pain stayed until the end though, that was a long 1.5hr 😩). However, if it doesn’t challenge you it doesn’t change you. When was the last time YOU pushed your limits? 💪🏻
I noticed it’s about 10 miles to run from the Burj al Arab to the Burj Khalifa. Anyone up for doing a Burj-to-Burj run soon?

Begin je je werkweek in de file of op het strand? Vandaag voor het laatste gekozen en wat voelt dat toch goed. En opvallend was dat ik de enige was (op het strand) 😁
Ondanks een drukke agenda 📖 en toenemende rug- & nekklachten 👨⚕️ (ik ben op 1 november tijdens het fietsforenzen 🚴🏻♂️ aangereden door een auto die bij het wegrijden uit een parkeervak mij op de fiets over het hoofd zag, maar dat is een verhaal voor een andere post), toch de hardloopschoenen 🏃♂️ aangetrokken voor een rustige duurloop in de wind 🌬 en regen 🌧 Nu vanachter de laptop 💻 een frisse blik, minder last van hoofdpijn en een goed gevoel. Zowel getraind als 🚯 2 flessenwijn, 1 bierflesje, 1 blikje en 2 plastic tassen van het strand opgeruimd ♻️
