Putting the finishing touches on these oil burners. These guys are shipping out tomorrow to @goodnatureessentials!! Excited to see what they think of them. We’ll be making another round of these to sell in the shop in the upcoming weeks!
I am SO excited to share some new pieces with you all on Wednesday! I just finished shipping off all preorders and store orders and I'm over here celebrating with my hi-fiving dogs and new cabbage bouquet. (see my stories to make sense of that 😂)
Glazing a few more mugs tonight and then really looking forward to tomorrow morning when I can photograph and upload a bunch of new work to the website! Make sure you have subscribed to my mailing list if you'd like to receive a personal reminder for the shop update!
(Wednesday at 5:30PST)💗🤗
in·tu·I·tion // the ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning. Feeling my way through each abstracted surface. These pieces are so fun for me to create, using a brush to create marks and splatter as my hand leads the way.
On my etsy... A goldenrod shino carved vase. The glaze is so toasty warm and breaks beautifully over the carving. Lots of vases on my page, as well as mugs and tumblers. Link in bio!
It's been fun and mildly frustrating (but mostly fun!) figuring out alcohol reduction firing with @jonpettyjohn and @tessypettyjohn. After a couple of blah results, something like this comes along that makes the whole tedious process that much more satisfying. Grateful beyond words to be able to explore with these deeply grounded master potters. The best part is seeing their childlike excitement when these vibrant colors magically emerge from the dull copper matte wash. Priceless!
There are good things and bad things about taking a 3 year sabbatical. First, Good...I found a few trays of runes I hadn’t fired before I stopped. I gave away all of the finished ones, so I have my own set! Second, bad news is all the dimensional glaze for my snowflakes is dried up. And the company is long gone. I am spending way too much time trying to reconstitute it, but #iwontgiveup ! #pottersofinstagram#mudhen#snowflake @snowflakepottery #minorsetback#porcelain
Every artwork has a story. Some are told. Some remain unspoken forever. I put this mug aside from the last firing because it has personal significance to me beyond its appearance. I fought this little bugger on the wheel. I definitely overworked it. When I textured it, I stamped too deep and three large holes started to appear as I stretched the clay to shape. I was determined not to throw it in the scrap bucket so I patched the holes and reworked the surface over and over again, finally deciding to create bands around the middle with a wooden tool. It was like an hour long surgery. I wasn’t really happy with it when I took it off the wheel but I had invested so much time into it that I figured I’d at least be able to use it as a test piece. Then came the glazing part of the process. It was applied well but I realized afterwards that how I had intended the color to be was done wrong. I did it backwards. Long story short this came out as my favorite of the batch. Sometimes we need to allow our fears and disappointments to teach us. Never give up. The world is filled with unseen potential. Actualize it.
I'm loving the new studio I'm going to [inspiring artists! sick glaze selection! clay that feels so good in my hands to which I have unfettered access! no stairs/all ramps! all gender inclusive bathrooms including multi stall bathrooms! a comprehensive anti-harassment and non-discrimination policy!]. I'm also learning to get over feeling intimidated by flying solo, with no instructor to share tips or give feedback. It's super scary for me and also super fun. I spent 9 hours in the studio on Sunday. Folks around me were throwing some wild ass pottery. I got self-conscious and anxious being surrounded by such amazing skill and beauty and then I fucked up the handle for this pouring vessel. Whoops. When I picked it up without the handle, though, it felt really nice in my hands. I'm going to sew a quilted cozy to wrap around its body -- both insulation and protection, keeping things safe in both directions [something I need to be more mindful about for myself: I need taking care of too]. Here's to feeling more confident in the studio! Holler at me if you want some clay objects. My list of commissions is slowly growing. As of now, if you insist on a transaction of some kind, I don't charge cash and I'm game for trades and/or am excited for you to donate to a rad organization instead... 💜💜💜 #wheelthrown#pottersofinstagram#potteryforall
