I remember this day very well. I woke up that day and decided you know what I’m going to unapologetically love my culture and not let myself be constrained by the artificial boundaries set by the western culture. So I wore a bindi, not with a suit, not with a lengha, not with a sari but an outfit I would regularly wear. I was walking down the street and someone stopped me and said “that’s very bold of you to be wearing that” I didn’t know what she was referring to, turns out it was my bindi. I asked why? She said it was too cultural people don’t like that. And she was right, people don’t like it but like it when Selena Gomez wears it or when Beyoncé wears it. Another response I got was “do you have an event today?” I said, “no I’m just wearing it just cuz” and they were taken aback. It really hit me how something as small as a dot got so many questions. The only reason for that is desi fashion is just not normalized. Sure, if I were to wear a suit I’d be accepted and even complimented but there would always be an assumption that I’m going to an event, it’s a religious holiday and I can’t wear it because I feel like or because I genuinely love my culture’s fashion. It’s seen as too extra, too colorful especially in a city like New York where fashion is anything that’s black. Just once I want to see a brown girl comfortable enough to wear her culture with 0 questions asked and no I’m not talking about the “ethnic” clothes from Zara or Forever 21 but authentic culture in its most raw and organic form! 📸: @nusizzle ❤️
Dreaming of being a signed model... this is such a tough industry to get into, more so because of the strict body requirements. I’m 5’5, 5’6 on a good day and something I can’t change. Though, I get why there are requirements, or else everyone would be a model.
No sé por qué. O mejor dicho lo sé. Porque en el sol y en la luz, encontré desde pequeño los mayores misterios, y porque estos elementos naturales ejercieron sobre mí, en razón de su propio sigilo, un atracción muy extraña.
