Parfianka Pomegranate Chunk: My new favorite variety of pomegranate!
I love growing different varieties of fruits so I know what to recommend to family, friends and people interested in growing fruit trees.
Pomegranate trees are super easy to grow here in the Sonoran Desert. They require little water when becoming established and once established they thrive off a few deep soaks early in the growing season. Once the fruit sets it is important to not over water them because the fruit will crack leaving the flesh exposed for fruit flies. Another thing to consider is to prune them properly because they love to produce lots of suckers.
The variety that makes up the bulk of the market in the United States is the Wonderful pomegranate that is mainly grown in California. It is a very large fruit that has a nice deep red color making it the staple for juice and market appeal.
With there being so many pomegranate varieties to choose from, it only makes sense to choose ones that are rare and unique in my mind.
Also, they are a good entry level fruit tree for the home gardener with the right climate.
What varieties of pomegranate have you tried? I would love to learn more!!! —
