Monument to the Victims of the Katy艅 Massacre.
In the spring of 1940, on Stalin's orders, 22.000 Polish Army officers, policemen, intelligentsia and other prisoners of war were murdered by the NKVD in Katy艅, Miednoje, Chark贸w and other places in the Soviet Union.
In memory of those victims this monument was funded by their compatriots, led by "The lower Silesian family of Katyn". The sword-wielding Angel of Death on a high pedestal leans over the figure of Katy艅 Pieta - Wroclaw, 1999.

Part 3 of the Katyn Memorial docu-series has just dropped. In this episode we highlight some of the interviews that we were able to gather. Be sure to turn on CC, we made sure to include English subtitles. As soon as we are able, we'll add Polish subs too. LINKINBIO.

鈥業n Prague, big red posters were put up on which one could read that 7 Czechs had been shot today. I said to myself, 鈥淚f I had to put up a poster for every 7 Poles shot, the forests of Poland would not be sufficient to manufacture the paper.鈥濃 [3]
.
~ Hans Frank [1-2], 6/6/40
.
On this day in 1943, the Governor of the so-called 鈥楪eneral-Government鈥 鈥 a zone within Nazi-occupied Poland that included Krak贸w & Warsaw [4] 鈥 met with Hitler to discuss his situation. Three years had passed since he described the bloodshed he presided over in Warsaw, & he was becoming fearful that 鈥 far from pacifying the local populace by force 鈥 it was only stirring a bees鈥 nest that would soon erupt into chaos.
.
He brought with him a document that later served as a gold mine of evidence of German crimes in Poland. It detailed the extreme repression under which the Poles lived, such as their malnourishment (especially the working classes forced to labour for German interests) [5]; the mass arrests & executions by German police (who applied a system of collective responsibility) [6-7]; & the forced resettlement of Poles & confiscation of their property [8].
.
Often depicted as a tyrant with delusions of grandeur, residing in Wawel Castle like a Polish king of old [9-10], closer inspection reveals Frank as a man of contradictions. He was undeniably influenced by, and felt a strong pressure to live up to, the Nazis鈥 brutal & contemptuous attitude towards Slavs. Yet he also seemed to secretly respect Polish culture & understood that a more humane approach towards the populace would only benefit the new Reich鈥檚 stability.
.
It was this approach that he advocated for at his meeting with the Fuhrer, but it was rejected outright. Having already been derided by Himmler as a 鈥榯raitor to the Fatherland who was hand-in-glove with the Poles鈥, Frank was told in no uncertain terms to fulfil his original instructions: 鈥榬uthlessly exploit this region as a war zone & booty country, to reduce it, as it were, to a heap of rubble in its economic, social, cultural & political structure.鈥
.
In little more than a year, both Hitler鈥檚 orders, & Frank鈥檚 premonitions of a spectacular uprising, were fulfilled.

On this day in 1945, one of the most despicable examples of Soviet treachery 鈥 & Anglo-American acquiescence to that treachery 鈥 began.
.
The 鈥楾rial of the 16鈥 was a show trial of civil & military leaders of the anti-Nazi Polish Underground State [1-5]. Among these was the Home Army鈥檚 Commander-in-Chief Leopold Okulicki [6] & Warsaw-based Deputy PM Jan Stanis艂aw Jankowski [7].
.
As representatives of a free & democratic Poland, they were kidnapped by the NKVD after being invited (with written guarantees of their safety) to join a 鈥楶olish Govt of National Unity鈥. They were transported to Moscow where physical torture & the ruining of their reputations awaited.
.
Upon finding out what had happened, the Polish Govt-in-Exile demanded that Washington & London help secure their release. True to form, the Soviets initially declared the whole affair a bluff by the 鈥楩ascist Polish govt鈥. On 5 May they finally confirmed the arrests but told President Harry Truman鈥檚 envoy that 鈥榯here鈥檚 no point in linking the Trial of the 16 with the support for the Soviet-backed Polish govt because the sentences will not be high.鈥
.
Meanwhile at Lubyanka prison [8-9], the 16 leaders were subjected to months of brutal interrogation & torture, then presented with accusations of bogus crimes including planning a military alliance with Nazi Germany, 鈥楽tate terrorism鈥 & plotting war against the USSR.
.
The 3-day trial began on 18 June, with journalists & observers from the US & UK present. The date deliberately coincided with a conference on establishing the Soviet-backed Polish puppet govt. With most of the defendants coerced into pleading guilty, the verdict was a no-brainer: 12 of the 16 were sentenced to prison terms of up to 10 years, which some of them would not survive.
.
In 鈥楨urope at War鈥, Norman Davies described as 鈥榦bscene鈥 the fact that there was no official protest abroad. The trial exterminated the true heirs to post-war Poland, & although its structures were soon rebuilt, it was never able to fully recover. On 6 July the UK & USA withdrew support for the Polish Govt-in-Exile, giving the Soviets a green light to intensify their repressions & secure control of eastern Europe [10].

General Haller was built at Ab Crichton in Turku, Finland, for the Imperial Russian Navy. She was bought by the Polish Navy in 1921 and subsequently served as a school ship and minelayer. In Poland she was classified as kanonierka (gunboat). When the Second World War broke out on September 1st 1939, ORP General Haller was under the command of Stanis艂aw Mieszkowski. The ship was patrolling the port of Gdynia, where she was damaged by German air attacks. On September 2nd 1939, the ship was sent to the naval port at Hel. There she was turned into a floating battery, until on September 3rd 1939, after major bomb damage, all her guns were removed and added to Polish defense structures on land. She was left floating until she was sunk on September 6th 1939. -------------------------------------------- The Filin-class guard ships were a class of ships originally built in Finland as patrol vessels for the Imperial Russian Navy. After the end of the Great War and the withdrawal of Russia from the area, the ships went to other use. Four ships were constructed, two of them were sold to Polish Navy where they served as ORP General Haller and ORP Komendant Pi艂sudski and the other two were commissioned into the Finnish Navy as Turunmaa and Karjala. They were initially classified as 'patrol cruisers' though the name did not describe them well. The ships had good accommodation for a their size but they hardly resembled a warship. Foreign observers' comments on the ships of the class in Finnish service was that they were 'graceful tugs'. The ships were only suitable for coastal patrolling as they were not particularly seaworthy and their structural strength and power were limited. Also the structure of the ships did not allow guns larger than 75 mm to be installed.

A top level geographer, named Georgia Warhurst, was taking a super simple test in her geography class. She wrote the greatest answers ever ranging from "erosion is when a rock called sally hit the bottom of the sea and died
A sea wall prevents people from drowning and swimming so they can鈥檛 surf" to "Back wash is when you wash your back" and even "Long shore drift is when a shore is long and drifts away from the sea and sea walls aren鈥檛 good because they arent environmentally friendly they waste too much money on resources and look ugly *** cough cough ** defo don鈥檛 steal from Micheal" which is just pure amazing. Even Tomas Cook wasn't this good. Let's just admire her geographical skills. It's beyond human ability, what's she has achieved. The half god creature has gotten a total of 4 out of 32 marks, transferring to percentages, she's got a mighty 12%. After transferring the percentages to a grade out of 9, it's below a 1. It's an UNGRADED mark. Which of course is the best. -

Among the many riveting facets of this Polish city is the grievous history that took place on its grounds. Throughout the month that I've stayed, vignettes of its haunting past have slowly opened its doors, beckoning for me to enter, to explore and to understand the events that made up the most destructive war in history and the part this town has played and witnessed.
.
.
.
When I chose Krak贸w to be the setting of my excursion, I had no idea I was to find myself in the very setting of Spielberg's classic, Schindler's List. It was impossible to contain my curiosity, given the many times the movie had been referred to in countless museum visits, conversations, and tours; hence, I watched it again, this time completely aware of every event, pointing out each scene with vivid familiarity (I've seen that! Hey, I was just there!). Historical monument after another, I gradually put the pieces together and pondered upon the themes that were contained and that followed it--Fascism, communism, genocide, xenophobia, antisemitism--all of which still exist in both explicit and subtle variations, today. The Pandora's Box of Western history, society, and culture was opened upon immersion (as prior formal education was severely lacking). I knew I was merely scratching the surface, and have grown excited to dig even deeper in knowledge, and, upon application, wisdom.

As usual, in order to better process things into my memory, I write about them in my online journal. If you're a war-history buff like me, allow my virtual tour to take you through Krakow鈥檚 WWII places of interest. Up on dressedfordreaming.blog.

Previous posts have covered the national significance, to Poland, of the European bison, the stork and, of course, the white eagle. Another such animal is the gray wolf.
.
Other than Russia, Poland has the largest population of gray wolves in Europe, numbering at least 2,500. It鈥檚 largely for this reason that Poland also has one of the highest densities in the world of overhead crossings & underpasses for wild animals. Virtually all the country鈥檚 major forests have resident wolf packs, and rather than being fenced off, the humans they share the landscape with are encouraged to utilise less environmentally intrusive methods of deterring these apex predators, such as erecting red bunting around sheep pens (which scares wolves, for reasons unclear) as well as keeping Tatra mountain sheepdogs nearby.
.
The gray wolf is a fascinating creature, closely related to the domestic dog yet enveloped in an aura of mystery due to their elusive nature & strong presence in European folklore. They鈥檙e extremely pack-oriented & territorial animals, with a typical Polish pack occupying some 250km squared.
.
Their place in Polish history is multi-faceted. In pre-Christian Poland, wolves were closely associated with the Slavic deity Dziewanna 鈥 goddess of the hunt, youth, wild nature & the moon 鈥 who was also known as 鈥榯he Divine Mother with Wolves鈥. In fact, as with many Christian traditions, the predecessor to Candlemas on 2 February was a feast day in honour of Dziewanna. Central to this occasion was the lighting of so-called 鈥榯hunder candles鈥 鈥 large, thick candles inscribed with spiritual symbols 鈥 to ask the goddess for protection against wolves, the freezing weather & for guidance during winter travels.
.
In modern times, the gray wolf was adopted by Nazi propagandists as a symbol of a menacing Poland threatening German territory. One poster widely circulated in 1939 read 鈥淭he Polish wolf is at your door!鈥
.
After the war, the 鈥榗ursed soldiers鈥 adopted the gray wolf as their mascot, and appropriately so 鈥 like the wolf, they resided in the forests & mountains, in extremely loyal & tight-knit bands, and were feared by Soviet agents & their collaborators in the towns & villages.

Battle of How贸d -
In June 1694 Tatar Muslims forces invaded Polish territory with the aim to pillage the countryside and capture prisoners for ransom. The Polish forces sent to stop them consisted of 7 chor膮gwie of hussars and pancerni from Okopy 艢wi臋tej Tr贸jcy and Szaniec Panny Marii strongholds, approximately four hundred men in total;historian Miros艂aw Nagielski estimates 100 hussars and 300 pancerni. Tatar numbers were estimated at twenty-five to seventy thousand, with forty thousand being the most commonly quoted figure. John III Sobieski, the king of Poland at the time, also mentioned the figure of forty thousand.

The first encounter took place on the fields near Hod贸w. The Polish cavalry charged the 700-strong Tatar vanguard and made them withdraw. Shortly afterwards Polish forces retreated to Hod贸w village due to overwhelming enemy numbers, and proceeded to fortify themselves using heavy wooden fences left there from earlier Tatar invasions. For the next 6 hours Polish troops resisted relentless Tatar attacks. Even after the Polish ran out of bullets, they continued to fire at the enemy, using Tatar arrows as improvised ammunition for their guns.

The battle ended in a decisive polish victory, only taking loosing less then 100 troops, whilst the ottomans lost between 1000-2000.

Also sorry if the quality of this post isn't as good as other as I was in a rush to get this post out today. -

Grunwald monument in Krakow. We should have more occasions for celebrating the brightest moments of our history in Poland such as the Polish victory in Grunwald field when alliance of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, led respectively by King W艂adys艂aw II Jagie艂艂o and Grand Duke Vytautas, decisively defeated the German鈥揚russian Teutonic Knights, led by Grand Master Ulrich von Jungingen. Powinni艣my sobie wybacza膰 - w akcie mi艂osierdzia, ale nie powinni艣my zapomina膰 - chocia偶by dlatego, 偶eby dzieci nie powtarza艂y b艂臋d贸w swoich ojc贸w i dziad贸w.

There are crimes and places so horrible that they stay in our consciousness for generations ... There are also several such places in #poznan - places where the German occupiers brutally murdered people. It's good that most of them are turned into museums today, that the #memory of these horrible crimes continues. We should forgive ourselves - in the act of mercy, but we should not forget - for the children not to repeat the mistakes of their fathers and grandfathers.
