Doing some research and I stumbled across this strange and unique sculptor. I was struck by this first image of a hand sculpture called ‘Struggle’. Stanislaw Szukalski was a Polish painter and sculptor whose aim was to create an entirely new Polish art based around mythology and history. He also (and here’s where we get to the strange part) developed the theory of Zermatism. This pseudoscientific theory suggested all human culture sprang from a post-flood Easter Island civilization and that all of mankind was locked in a constant struggle with the Sons of Yeti - that’s right - the offspring of Yeti and humans. He sought to illustrate his theory in his work.
Adding another dose of strangeness, later in his life Szukalski became something like a grandfather figure to none other than Leonardo DiCaprio. DiCaprio would go on to produce a film about and sponsor a retrospective of the artist’s work. Look into this guy’s sculpture and illustrations, quite interesting!
