A visit to Castle Sinclair Girnigoe is a must when driving the NC500. Located outside of Wick, the ruins are located precariously on the cliff edge of a peninsula - it is surrounded on most sides by the sea. Originally occupied in the 14th Century by the Sinclair’s ( @rowangully claim to fame, I hear) it has had a chequered past. Prisoner’s driven mad by a diet of salted beef and no water, the castle being seized by Cromwell, and a feud that resulted in the last clan battle. This place just oozes history.
