Spot the difference: No? It’s a big difference! In the second photo I use the help of my thighs by lifting my chest that little bit higher and really working that core. The inner thighs and core work to stabilize you while you lift yourself up with your thighs, straighten the spine and circle the arms around and then return to flexion of spine, tightening your belly button into your spine and pushing back down on the barrel. Once you are comfortable in this position (hugging your knees with feet above the mat), only then should you move to rocking. Inhale on the rock back and sharp exhale on the rocking back up. Top of the Day: Advanced Mat Pilates - The Corkscrew. The Corkscrew is one of those exercises that is far more challenging than it looks because it engages the deepest abdominals, the internal obliques, the Transverse Abdominis, and the external obliques. It challenges the abdominals and controls spinal movement against the weight of the legs shifting side to side. Lie supine on the mat with arms resting by your side, legs adducted and parallel. Take a deep exhale and lift the legs up in a roll over then follow with another sharp exhale and circumduct your legs around all the way but without touching the ground. Now take another deep exhale and lift and roll them to the other side. As you do each lift and roll, control the core by exhaling and tightening your abdominals. If your core is not strong enough, you will feel pain in your internal obliques, so please don’t attempt the Corkscrew unless you are at Advanced level at least Tier 4. Don’t use momentum and avoid pressure on your neck. If you have cervical or lumbar issues, avoid the Corkscrew. .
