The Noble Grapes of Alsace
Over 90% of the wines elaborated in Alsace are white wines. Alsace’s most reputable grape varieties are known as ‘The Noble Grapes of Alsace’: riesling*, muscat (dry style), pinot gris, gewurztraminer (sweet style). Riesling and muscat are excellent with delicate seafood dishes like clear steamed fish. Pinot gris and gewurztraminer pair brilliantly with seasoned dishes like curry chicken. *Alsace rieslings are more full bodied, fruity, dry and alcoholic than German rieslings, which tend to be lean & crisp, sweet, mineral and lower in alcohol. This is explained by differences in climate, terroir, viticulture and vinifications practises.
Besides pairing nicely with a wide variety of dishes, these four noble grape wines make superb dessert wines when elaborated from late harvesting (Vendanges Tardives): by late Autumn the cooler and more humid climate allows the development of botrytis, a fungus that makes the grape peel thinner evaporating part of the water inside the fruit thus turning the sugar concentration higher. Once fermentation stops there is still some residual sugar and the wine becomes naturally sweet. Noble grapes may also be hand picked (Sélection de Grains Nobles) i.e. only the grapes affected by botrytis are selected resulting in a more complex and honeyed wine similar to Bordeaux Sauternes or Hungarian Tokaji.

Ok, that’s a little aggressive. But I think y’all get what I am saying. Set some goals, big or small. And CRUSH them. Or like, just get up and start in SOME way 👏🏻👏🏻. •••
Not everything has to be profound.
Exhibit A: I was challenged by my therapist [#yaytherapy ] to start and keep a planner because my head does this thing where I can’t keep my thoughts straight and then I go off onto tangents and forget the thing I was originally talking about and I make these long run on sentences which, I know, grammar is important but...WAIT!!!PLANNERS!!! 🤷🏼♀️🤓. So I have started to do that, and I am bad at it!! And guess what, THAT IS OK BECAUSE I AM DOING IT 👍🏻🙏🏻🧚🏼♀️. •••
Am I “crushing” this goal? Well, for me. Yes! Should we measure ourselves by what someone else is doing/wearing/feeling/saying? Hell to the f%*k no. Measure your own success by where you are at in your life right at this moment. If you can honestly say you’ve grown from where you were a year ago...awesome! If you can’t...COOL, you get to TRY AGAIN!
I’m proud of myself for myriad reasons right now. So I’m sitting, by myself, writing down some new goals I have, with a perfectly chilled glass of #pinotgris outside on, what may be, one of the last long ass days of summer. Am I going to CrUsH [<<<—-I hate that writing, but I feel like it interprets what I mean 🤦🏼♀️] every one of my goals for the rest of my life? OMFG NO. 🤣😂. But will I always try again? Yes. I promise that, yes. I will always try for again, because I love myself that much. And you should too. #iloveyou , random internet strangers and friends. •••
Famille Hugel 2014 'Classic' Alsace Pinot Gris
Warm summer nights make for great white wine drinking. This wine was initially unimpressive as I served it too cold but the flavours opened up as the wine warmed.
The wine is dry but there is fruit sweetness with apple flavours and a warmth of cinnamon spice. There is some texture and weight but also lightness from the acidity and mineral spritz on the tongue.
It's a very versatile white. Recommended to serve with a sunset and cheese platter :-) #whitewine#pinotgris#alsace#famillehugel#wrocław#wiszniamała
