Directed by Clive Barker •
For the 20th and final entry into this list of movies , I’ve decided to include another iconic franchise. Although somewhat plagued by the steep drop in quality in the sequels , this series is marvellously inventive. The first film, Hellraiser is the directorial debut from Clive Barker , who also wrote the novella on which the film is based , The Hellbound Heart. This story stands above many others of the same era because of the way it really leans into the bizarre violence . It doesn’t have much of a sense of humour , and rather opts for a hellishly sadistic edge. Barker creates one of the most memorable stories , thanks to his inclusion of the sinister cabal of pain and pleasure , the Cenobites. Existing in this hell realm of torturous suffering , these monsters are unlike anything ever created and have been immortalized in the horror genre ever since . With an ice cold performance from Clare Higgins, and supported by Andrew Robinson , Ashley Laurence , Sean Chapman and of course , Doug Bradley, all the performances help create some believable characters. With some great music to help set the mood, a grotesque vision from Barker and some of the most unique villains ever created , Hellraiser is a movie I find myself revisiting frequently.
