I’m super duper excited to finally announce that I am officially a PILATES TEACHER IN TRAINING! 🧘🏻‍♀️ My journey to Pilates started when I was seeking out ways to cross train that would compliment running.  When I started at @clubpilates I believed that I would have to force myself to cross train there once a week.  What I discovered was that I loved Pilates just as much as I love running! I felt from only my 2nd class that being a Pilates Teacher was something I would love doing and I’m finally making it a reality!  Try Pilates y’all, it will change your life! ✨🌙

It’s hard to believe it was already one year ago that Mary Bowen visited us in SO CA for a 3 day weekend extravaganza of Pilates, viewed through her own special lens!  We heard about the history of Pilates from someone who was right there, studying with Joe and Clara in the original Pilates Studio on 8th Avenue in NYC.  Mary Bowen, age 88 this year, is still going strong.  God Bless and keep her-she is a Living Treasure to our community!

▶️Great posture◀️ begins with a healthy spine. Our modern lives see us perpetually bent forward, so working on spinal mobility is a priority. Here’s a yummy Swan back extension variation with the #magiccircle

For most, the tendency is to bend at the lower back to lift - not only is it uncomfortable, but it also causes pain in the long run. With the Magic Circle, by pressing down against the resistance, the scaps and serratus are activated, and the chest lifts -again, the chest lifts! That’s the key to back extensions. Never the from lower back. Of course, pulling in the belly in tight against the spine also protects it from injury.

Exercise Tip: Toes w/o the reformer.

Here is a unique way you can strengthen your calves, ankles, and inner thighs; this exercise also strengthens your deep abdominals while lengthening your hamstrings.

Using a yoga block and a stepper, helps  maintain the integrity of your lumbar spine which occasionally lifts up when lying on your back if you were to do this on a reformer.

Special shout out to the lovely Christa Murray for executing this move with ease.

How’s your sliders? No, not a beef sandwich nor those cool beach/ poolside shoes but these little monkeys! They’re cheeky slippery gliding discs that I use in my Pilates Circuit class. These are a fiendish tool that will really challenge your stabilising muscles as you’ve got to use control of that body to master even the simplest movements. Be it legs, hips, core, shoulders, arms- there’s so much you can do with them. They’re also a really good tool for creating exercises that work through a myriad of ranges of motion be it rotation, abduction, adduction and even circumduction. Here’s just one of the exercises I challenge my class members to, it’s much harder than it looks! 😉 I created my Pilates circuit class for people who want the chance to have more bespoke exercise at a fraction of the cost of personal training. The class is limited to a maximum of 6 so each person can get some time with me to work on specific target areas- be it prehab, rehab or general fitness- the beauty of it is you can be at any level as what you get to do is what suits your needs. Regrann from @lebleupilates -  Regrann from @jjweeks_pilates -  #marchmatness2018 - day 15 - Neck Pull ▪️ A modification - using a deflated physio ball as a useful prop for this advanced Pilates exercise, which is everything besides what the name implies- ✖️no neck pulling - I modified the hand position to the front of the head to discourage this tendency and rather to encourage the deep neck flexors to work by keeping the forehead gently pressed against the back of my hands throughout ▪️The deflated ball teaches correct movement patterns, especially for clients who may a tight lower back or rigid spine,  or may have a heavier upper body and may feel the need to pull up with the neck or use momentum. ▪️the focus can stay with the control of the deep abdominal muscles and articulation of the spine. ▪️Keep the energy reaching out through the heels and the legs remain strong, extended and stable ▪️shoulder girdle stability avoids the shoulders shrugging or hunching and the activation of drawing the scapular under the armpits greatly assists the integrity of the movement to stay focused from the powerhouse ▪️on the roll down maintain a neutral spine, leaning back co-contracting TvA and spinal extensors -  then drawing the tailbone under, activating the glutes and powerhouse and further articulating the spinal flexion to roll back ▪️at the end of the roll up slowly start lifting by extending the T- spine, lifting tall and staying extended through the spine and waist before starting to lean and roll back again ▪️

STABILITY: this may not look like much but trust me, it’s super challenging to keep the scapula, pelvis and the whole torso stabilized in natural while side laying, especially with the resistance coming from behind like this. 
NO REFORMER? No problem. You can recreate this on the mat by tying a light-medium strength resistance band to the base of a table, couch leg, doorknob, etc.

Running man too hard on the back, arms and shoulders? Give this modified version (also just as challenging) a try!  It allows you to modify and remove  that quick and sometimes uncontrolled bouncing of the hips from doing a typical running man👊 as well as decrease pressure on the arms from running those legs in and out. This will prepare you better keeping a nice semi closed chain (vs more open) as result of keeping three limbs on the ground at all times really isolating those abs!  Anyway! Yes, we took Chip with us to Botswana 🇧🇼. In Africa.... He was a wild beast! He stalked small mammals, he climbed fences, slipped under electrified barbwire. Heck, this cat, even though he's declawed... Caught 3 BATS! YES.... BATS🦇!

And then we shipped him home with us. He's become sedentary and feasting on a fatty American diet!

Lately I have heard a lot about overwhelmed, to much, no time, focus on yourself on SM and it is so true! I am still of that paper and pen planner group, you know what I mean? I love 💻 but, I need that ✅ on paper each day to get that feeling of Whew! done!

Leaving the studio for a week is a big deal and to come back and ease into it all again is a goal! The last thing is to come back from a relaxing ⛱ and then get all stressed over everything. To top it off, end of summer means returning clients, new clients and of course the PMA. 
What is the 📝? How can I get the 🤗 to stay?

✔️ TT Students class plans set for return
✔️Studio stocked with all needs
✔️Senior Teacher in charge
✔️Packed- yes, I am one of those!

Feeling pretty bliss after the EKKA holiday 😌 feeling even more bliss after trying @biteswithbalance Superfood Peanut Butter & Chocolate Protein Truffles 👌🏼😋

1 can drained and rinsed butter beans
1/2 cup almond meal
3-4 tablespoon @picspeanutbutter 
2 tablespoon @happywayau vanilla pea protein
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1-2 tablespoon maple syrup
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Process ingredients together in food processor. Roll into balls and freeze for 20 mins. Store in fridge.
