Fall Quarter Completed:
My fall quarter of The Teachings of the Tree People: Culture Matters, I formed my own in program independent studies Storytelling and Leadership Education in Hawai’i. Traveling to the kingdom of Hawaii, the island of O’ahu(the Gathering Place), while learning the creation stories and the role of storytelling in Hawaiian culture and looking at education of Native Hawaiian youth from Native Hawaiian’s; I brought my independent studies all together through studying Kalo, the Taro plant which is the root of all Hawaiian life, fauna and culture. Looking at education, and Native peoples through an Indigenous lense and common principles such as Drum culture, and the drum being the heartbeat, the center of life.
I want to emphasize both the social and cultural significance that this work and countless other educational projects have on the Hawaiian people, culture and the education of the Hawaiian youth. Hawaiians are working on cultural preservation of Hawaiian culture some of which I got to see and experience first hand. Meeting and being able to discuss the Native Science behind the Kalo with a current University of Hawaii professor reminded me the importance of staying rooted to my own Native American principles and original teachings keeping a indigenous lens when looking at history, education and when navigating and learning about the environment that I’m in.
This project is the start of ongoing research that goes beyond my undergraduate studies. It reminds me and gave me experience on the effect of things such at colonialism and how the assimilationist models of education that are currently in place at education institutions and even in primary, secondary and higher education affect Native people. Additionally, covers Hawaiian History, Storytelling, Science, Native Science, Education and Education Theory, Cultural Studies, Cultural History and is a small example of approaching education through Indigenous Epistemologies, aiming towards educational sovereignty.
