Delivered by Lockheed-Vega in Burbank to the USAAF in June 1945, the future 'Sally B' and star of the movie Memphis Belle was one of the last B-17G Flying Fortresses to be built. Too late to see active service in the Pacific she was instead sent to Wright Field (now known as Wright-Patterson Air Force Base) where she was used for research and experimental purposes until 1954, before being sold on to the French Institut Geographic National for mapping and survey work.
Since 1975 she has been based in England at IWM Duxford and is now the only airworthy B-17 still flying in Europe. As a memorial to the 79,000 US airmen who gave their lives between 1942 and 1945 she is a living, thundering tribute to their sacrifice, and can often be seen at airshows across the UK.
