Back in Germany, still reflecting on my time in Amsterdam. It was such a refreshing time, not just for self-care but also to get a different perspective and bring that back to what I’m doing now. That’s what travel does for you.
In particular - learning about the Netherlands attitude of acceptance and tolerance of diversity.
Amsterdam / Netherlands have always been very tolerant. There’s been great discussion as to why.
It comes down to geography. So much of the country is under sea level which causes flooding. When a flood happens, no matter who you are - aristocrat, middle class worker, black, white or blue - you can’t deal with it on your own. You have to put your differences aside, come together and work together.
So the attitude of the nation towards people seeking asylum can be attributed to their history and their geography. Oh, if only we could all see clearly: all humans are created equal.
Today’s Toxicology Tuesday (or Wednesday, since this is late) is a two-part post on digoxin: today we are exploring its toxic effects, & Friday we will look at its therapeutic effects!
Digoxin is a cardiac glycoside that is derived from the foxglove plant. It has a narrow therapeutic index, meaning there is only a small margin between its therapeutic dose & its toxic dose, hence the somewhat common occurrence of poisoning. Digoxin toxicity can also occur after long-term use. Individuals with elevated calcium or low potassium may be at greater risk of toxicity.
The primary mechanism of digoxin is by blocking Na+/K+ATPase (sodium potassium adenosine triphosphatase), a ubiquitous enzyme that is vital to a number of physiological processes. Digoxin preferentially blocks this in cardiac muscle over other cell types, leading to increased heart contractility.
Symptoms of acute digoxin poisoning include hyperkalaemia, vomiting, vertigo & arrhythmia. As well as arrhythmia, digoxin may also cause tachycardia & a sinoatrial or AV block. Chronic poisoning usually has more ambiguous symptoms, such as general malaise & fatigue, in addition to visual disturbances (especially seeing yellow).
After toxicity occurs, the primary concern is with life-threatening cardiac effects & hyperkalaemia, & to stabilise the patient. Digoxin-specific antibody is administered as an antidote, & works by binding to the drug, leaving it unable to exert its effect. Activated charcoal may also be administered to remove excess digoxin from the digestive system.
Digoxin has been used historically as a poison, but perhaps the most well known case in recent times is that of Charles Cullen, an American serial killer (and former nurse) who killed 40 patients with overdoses of digoxin, & was sentenced to 18 consecutive life sentences without parole.
The Science of Sharing🤝
Do some people share more than others just because they’re nicer or have more compassion😇? A recent study out of the University of Pennsylvania doesn't think so.❌
These researchers studied different communities of Hadza peoples from Tanzania. This indigenous population still survives on a hunter🏹 and gatherer🥙 lifestyle, which is why the researchers chose this population to better understand our evolutionary behaviours away from the confounding variables of modern society. This population can offer insight👀 on how cooperation and sharing evolved.
The researchers asked over 400 Hadza individuals in different communities to play a sharing game🤝. They were given 4️⃣ honey straws and asked how many they want to keep to themselves and how many they would like to share with members of their community. The results 📊varied drastically between communities, however, individuals were MORE⬆️ likely to be generous in a more⬆️ generous community.
Some members who had moved communities were also shown to shift➡️ their generous behaviours to match that of the new community, thus demonstrating that sharing behaviour is more based on the collective ideals of particular society rather than an individual’s morality.
The Hadza people often worry about food supply so they rely on each other as a community to share and survive. It makes sense that individuals would learn quickly if sharing would aid or hinder their and their family’s survival👨👩👧👦 within a specific community.
Do you consider yourself a generous individual❓Have you noticed these behaviours change after moving to a new community or environment?❓
On behalf of my boyfriend- He is doing a JAILBREAK on behalf on Mental Health Research UK who have also been his funders for his PhD. Dropped 3 hours away from Cardiff, middle of nowhere and have to get back without using any money to do so. Feel free to donate any amount, no matter how big or small. Mental Health is important to everyone!

Three years ago today, I received the piece of paper that officially recognizes me as “Dr Barlow.” My life has taken so many different turns since then that it almost feels like a lifetime ago. Regardless of where I end up and what I end up doing, I will always be grateful for the education I received and the path I chose to take. It was a childhood dream of mine to get a PhD (I was a weird kid) and the fact that I achieved that goal so much sooner than I’d ever anticipated is a huge source of pride — even if it did spark a small existential crisis. I’m glad I chose to study math; I think it makes me a better person and a better writer. Besides, “I have a PhD in math” just sounds super badass.
yesterday I defended my doctoral dissertation 😥
I am so proud of myself 💓 I am so proud of my husband who defended his PhD as well👫
Today is the first day of my normal life: I will study, read and write what I WANT, not what I have to 🙆
I also promised my husband, and myself, that I would stop worrying when our PhDs are done, so here I am: carefree and happy😁
PS my doctoral dissertation was an experimental study of acupuncture for menopausal symptoms, if anyone is interested 🙄
