On the latest episode of The Mortar & Pestle, PCCA member Saad Dinno of Acton Pharmacy shares what compounding means to him. Here’s a sneak peek — listen to the full episode wherever you listen to podcasts (Podbean link in bio☝️).
“There was a one-and-a-half year old Leukemia patient, newly diagnosed, at Boston Children's Hospital, but she was getting treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. The mom and the dad, every week, had to go in to get the medicine that was being compounded at the pharmacy. So the mom came to us — this was in 2003, 2002 — and the mom said, “We have a one-and-a-half year old girl with Leukemia, and we need this medicine. Can you compound it?” And I said yeah, sure, let me look into it for you, just give me a couple of hours. Of course, I called Dana-Farber first, then I called PCCA second, the [Pharmacy] Consulting Department, and I said I have this little girl that needs this medicine. Well, there was a formula in the PCCA Formula Database, so I took a look at it, we made some adjustments due to her age and such, and the mom came in two days later and picked up the medicine. And she said, “You don’t understand what this has done. Because you’re able to do this, I can concentrate on my girl instead of driving to Boston, an hour each way, to go grab this medicine.”...Now the girl is 16 years old, comes into my pharmacy still, to this day, walks in, gives me a hug. And the mom, to this day — even though honestly, I was just doing my job, as a compounding pharmacist, I was doing my job, taking care of a patient. She still thanks me to this day. To this day, they still thank me for taking care of her at that time.... What can I say? Stories like that, because of compounding, they never leave you. I mean, talk about personalized. That’s as personalized as it gets.”

My body is so incredibly strong💪🏻...
The more I learn about just how resilient it is, the more grateful I become, and the more kind I want to be to it.
After 20 years of... Putting in long hours in the office
Competing in physique and strength sports
Neglecting to focus on maintaining proper daily rhythm
Not enforcing a solid night time routine
Refusing to put work on DND
Pushing harder and harder in the gym
Somehow managing to get stronger and learn new skills
Maintaining high stress levels with little to no down time
Being on hormonal birth control
And...recovering from a hysterectomy last year
... I am here, still strong, still disciplined, still resilient…..
But so much smarter🤓
Investing deeply in knowledge and relationships with like minded experts who are committed to proactive, personalized, and holistic approaches to health, fitness, and lifestyle.
Aiming for nothing short of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, the most optimized state of comfortable, mindful, healthy and happy.
Over the last week I spent time with @drdrobot and @coachm_lee reviewing my @dutchtest
This is one of many evaluations we are using to explore how well my body and its stystems respond, react, adapt to daily stressors and then return to balance.
The Dutch Test is a comprehensive hormone analysis that profiles sex and adrenal hormones and melatonin, along with their metabolites, to identify symptoms of hormonal imbalances. The test is taken over a few days, collecting dry urine samples at key times during the day.
I’m on day 24 or of food sensitivity reset from the MRT (see previous post ) and have continued to implement daily RX from @coachm_lee and Doc feeling good, learning a lot, being patient with myself, finding new and improved daily rhythm. More to come....
#endometriose#endometriosis#xenoestrogen
Flashback to Xmas 2003. I was making these decorations for the tree 🌲 when I suddenly realised I could no longer move my fingers. Shortly thereafter I was told I had Rheumatoid Arthritis and sent a huge box of Humira, a syringe 💉 delivered drug that leaves your tummy covered in pincushion bruises from the daily injections. A diagnoses of lupus, which I had never even heard of, swiftly followed. More drugs. It was at this point that I took my health into my own hands and read every book 📚 and journal article on reversing my diagnoses. My doctor was skeptical - these weren’t reversible conditions. As many of us now know, autoimmune diseases have many causes but inflammation🔥is at the core of all of them. Reduce inflammation and reduce your disease state. In my case I went headlong into Dr Barry Sears’ Zone Diet - not to lose weight but to lose illness. I also used an experimental treatment called IVIg. I had asked my doctor if we could test again to ensure there were no false positives in my initial blood tests 📝 When we re-tested a few months later, my CRP had sunk from >10.6 to <1.5 and there was no sign of RA or lupus. My doc explained that my results were “a blip”, but I knew better: I had reversed these diseases with dramatic changes in diet and lifestyle and it has stayed like this ever since. Fast forward to Xmas 2018. Humira now costs US$4500/month - $54,000/year and amounting to $810,000 over the 15 years I’ve avoided it. How many Merry Christmases can that buy? #autoimmunedisease#autoimmuneprotocol#aip#rheumatoidarthritis#lupus#healthyself#healyourself#biohacking#personalizedmedicine#healthcoach#empoweredhealth#bulletproof#bulletproofcoach#reversedisease#reversedisease#reclaimyourhealth#zonediet#drbarrysears#thezonediet
Genetic engineering, specifically the process of altering DNA of an embryo, emerged as a solution to end inheritance of genetic disorders and diseases indefinitely, as a form of personalized medicine.
CRISPR technology allows scientists to test and conduct genetic modification without the economic constraints of former genetic therapy solutions, which ranged in the millions.
A team of scientists at the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen, China lead by biophysics research associate He Jiankui posted medical documents in the months leading to November of 2018 regarding their ongoing attempts at creating the first gene-edited, CRISPR baby, using CRISPR technology. Additionally, the MIT Technology Review senior editor, summarized in large, bold writing that covered the exclusive news: “The step toward genetically tailored humans was undertaken in secrecy and with the clear ambition of a stunning medical first.” (Regalado, Antonio. HOW TO RELAX?
In our last post, we talked about how chronic, low-grade, everyday stress increases the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) which in turn suppresses the parasympathetic, which is responsible for rest, digest and recover. The main nerve of the PNS is the vagus nerve which connects the brain to the gut. So anything we do to stimulate the vagus nerve will increase PNS activity.
So what can we do about this to recreate balance? Decrease SNS to boost PNS.
Here are my few favourite things:
Mindfulness is all the rage and for good reason. Research is exploding touting the benefits of meditation for many different conditions. Having a daily practice, like a prayer time, decreases excess SNS activity and the corresponding focus on breathing increases the PNS.
When you breathe deeply, using your diaphragm and expanding your stomach you activate the vagus nerve. Start with a few minutes every morning and evening.
Tip: try doing it on the toilet. You have the time and it helps to move the bowels. .
This is a powerful vagus nerve stimulator because a lot of the vagus nerve endings are in the throat and top of the mouth. Something you can add to your routine after you brush your teeth, is gargle with salt water, also good for freshening your breath and oral hygiene. .
One of the few places the vagus nerve surfaces is in the inner ear. Work with a naturopathic doctor to create a specific protocol personalized to you.

Telomeres, the end caps of your chromosomes, has emerged as a new biomarker of longevity, health and wellbeing.
It’s also one of the factors that determines your biological age.
Did you know that chronologically you can be 65, depending on your birthday, but biologically you can be much younger or older, depending how your life has affected your cell, which reflects on the length of your telomeres and how good and young you feel and look?
So instead of using symptoms and diagnosis to identify a therapy, on an old school “one-size-fit-all” fashion, we use advanced biomolecular, genetic and telomere profiling to craft a personalized formula just for you and your unique blueprint, aiming to enhance your living experience. .........
Our pioneering research suggests that by using this targeted approach we might have found a novel therapeutic and preventive strategy that could potentially help you not only to stay healthy, live longer and look younger, but also to achieve your highest potential physically, mentally and spiritually. ........

Methylation is a cellular process that is VITAL to optimal physical & mental health, but is often working at half mast in many of us. 😯
Turns genes on and off (epigenetics)
Processes chemicals & endogenous toxins
Makes myelin, DNA & energy
Builds and breaks down neurotransmitters
Builds immune cells
Makes glutathione (which allows the cells to detoxify and protect themselves) .
I look at methylation in everyone, but particularly in endometriosis, anxiety, depression, autism, bipolar, OCD, autoimmunity, cardiovascular disease and chronic viral infections. Really any source of unquenched inflammation. .
You can't effectively treat individualized methylation concerns by throwing methylated B vitamins at everybody, which has been a catch-all approach. .
A carefully taken health history and for some cases, testing, can show us which methylation-related pathways are jammed (hint: it goes way beyond MTHFR mutations). .
With a number of my patients, we have been spending the last few months crafting a supplement free way to maximize methylation and optimally effect epigenetic forces for long term, feed-it-forward natural healthcare.

I came across this post from @drpaulhrkal, Canadian Naturopath, and had to share. I never dreamed I would be able to stay home with my children—I am grateful every day for @thecitrussociety and what it’s provided for us.
“As we begin Advent, I reflect about the greatest gift we give our children: our time.♥️
Being a dad is the most important job I have in my life. Everyone that is a parent would agree with me on this.
➕But as a doctor seeing chronic health issues and sharing the latest research on how diet and exercise can improve your health, what is often overlooked is that being a good parent has the most powerful impact on your children's lives. I take that to heart with my kids, but this fact is something I want to hilight for all the parents and future parents out there.
➕The majority of research on parental influence (or the lack therefore) is usually restricted to the fields of sociology and psychology, and gets overlooked in the medicine and traditional sciences. The powerful impact a parent has on a child's lifelong health is often not discussed.
➕The research is crystal clear that the children with steadfast and loving parental influence have the lowest rates of heart disease, mood disorders, and other chronic health issues later in life. They also have the greatest ability to cope with stressors.
If you're looking to have the biggest impact on someone's health, look no further than on your children and be present.
➕Love them unconditionally ➕Trust is formed in small everyday moments rather than big grandiose gestures. This is what a child remembers.
So while making sure they eat their veggies is great, what's more important at the end of the day is that you gave them the gift of your time.
🌲What are some ways you plan to spend quality time with your children this holiday season?”

No I'm not talking about the old once-over we give someone we've just met to size them up 😉...I'm talking about a complete medical physical exam where your skin is looked at, your glands/neck/armpits/abdomen/thyroid are palated and maybe even measured, your eyes and mouth are looked at in detail, your ear canals and lymph nodes are checked, breast and testicle inspection, your reflexes and pulses are measured, your heart is listened to, your gait and range of motion is assessed....and more. .
The number of lumps, bumps, oral lesions, changing moles, thyroid cysts, nail abnormalities, benign murmurs, patches of fungal overgrowth, fibrocystic breasts etc I have found just by spending time with someone and recording their physical exam findings is extraordinary. These are things people never knew about before. Often, the finding is benign, possibly even there since childhood, but we refer out to have everything checked out with scans, lab work, skin scrapings and/or specialist involvement or we make a note to monitor non-urgent findings for changes. Often we get clues into what is going on behind the symptoms someone may feel. I am now considering implementing a policy of setting a timer to keep us on track for fitting in a physical exam or ensuring a prompt follow up contains a physical. It is that important! And patients deserve to feel looked after. ✔ .
Naturopathic care is not alternative. It is a vital part of a medical system that quite frankly needs the extra hands. 🤲

This is the HOW of #holistichealth . I am passionate about wellness particularly via personalised nutrition (influenced by Ayurveda). This has been my focus since I moved to California and away from past lives in the #pharmaceuticalindustry as well as an #IPlawyer in England. My research is 12 years of countless anecdotal evidence as well as meta-study of available literature from science, the arts and philosophy. I try to read between the lines and so a lot of what I now say and see cannot be confirmed by traditional peer reviewed data and definitely not double-blind clinical studies! That would require pharmaceutical companies to take an interest in #personalizedmedicine . But some of us are not prepared to hold our breath for that....

Let's talk about #CoconutOil : it's everywhere. Hair care, skin care, recipes, natural remedies, we could go on. So what's fact and what's fiction about this "cure all"? ◽️ The truth: it's high in saturated fats, which aren't great for our bodies (and can lead to obesity and heart disease). But it also contains unsaturated fats, which can decrease bad cholesterol and keep your energy up. The most important thing is moderation and understanding what you're putting in. What are you using this cure all for? Tell us (or ask us a question, we're here for ya!)

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeks!!!!! Look who I ran into! Dr. Jeff Bland. THE Jeff Bland. I am one of his biggest fans. Like...heart palpitations when this picture was being taken kind of fan. Like...pass up Mark Hyman for this photo opportunity kind of fan. He is the founder of functional medicine. The founder of the Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Institute. International speaker. The author of my favorite book, The Disease Delusion. Functional medicine saved my life so in a roundabout kind of way, so did he. So much love and respect for this human being. I told him that I read his book and made an hour presentation that I present to any one person or audience who will listen and he was so moved. Super amazing and made my night!! #AIC2018#functionalmedicine#healthyliving#epigenetics#personalizedmedicine#foodisinformation#wellness
