I'm planning on participating in the #fall10x10 challenge (created by @leevosburgh and @caroline_joy) - pick 10 garments to wear for 10 days. These are my picks, plus a pair of brown boots. I took photos so that I can play "closet rummy" a la @karentempler and document my outfits without necessarily taking a photo every day. I do want to document my new Persephone pants though!
Ok- the Persephone pants are worth the hype. I worried they would be too tight and uncomfortable but they are amazing! The key is the really really high waist that rests above your belly area and so you can still breathe. I measured exactly a size 10, but made a straight size 8 as the pattern does have ease. Fabric is a heavy twill that I thrifted and is perfect for this style. Handmade buttonholes, bound seams and true triple stitched flat-felled seams in the butt/inseam. I’ve got short legs and a 2” hem left me with the perfect just above your shoes length.
The #fall10x10 challenge, organised by @leevosburgh and @caroline_joy , starts tomorrow. I did the summer challenge and loved it, so here we go again.
These are my 10 pieces to wear over the course of the next 10 days. I resisted the urge to quickly sew some things to fill the gaps in my fall wardrobe (like a cold weather skirt) and decided to work with what I had. All these pieces (except for the boots) were either sewn by me or purchased second hand. This year I decided to take all the pictures in one go. I find it hard to take daily pictures and we'll be moving at the end of the month, so things might be too chaotic for a daily routine. I tried out more than 10 outfit combinations and looked at the pictures to narrow it down to the 10 best outfits. So that's been a very helpful exercise already. Now let's see if I will stick to the outfits as planned.
I'm very excited to see everyone else's outfits. I'm not a cold weather person, so I need the inspiration to get excited about fall and winter wear. After an incredibly warm October so far we are expecting a drop in temperature next week, so fingers crossed that the pieces I chose are warm enough.
Details on the pieces in the comments.
#persephonepants in raspberry red cotton drill certainly distract from the messy room and shower hair. I already own vintage wool sailor pants with similar cut and construction so the pattern was right in my wheelhouse (heheh), but phone-size pockets and easy button fly - bonus. This is really a toile, I cut a straight size then brought in the waist 5 cm through the back seam and darts. Next pair I’ll grade. #annaallenpatterns
Reporting live from the Rhinebeck Sheep and Wool Festival! Here’s my finished #rhinebecksweater .
If you saw my stories the other day, it was a photo finish the night before I left, and I’m so happy with it all finished.
Outfit details: Knitting hands and “KNIT CLUB” sweatshirt embroidered on a vintage chainstitch machine, plus my new favorite pair of me-made pants, the beloved #persephonepants pattern.
Ok, brb. Gotta go buy too much yarn.
👖👖This was a huge first— #memade jeans. Jeans have always seemed like something you would need industrial machines for, but with all the new jeans patterns and stores selling denim fabric with jeans making kits, I thought it would be fun to try. And it really really was.
These are the #heroinejeans from @merchantandmills
I bought their kit from their shop online, which comes with everything including some AMAZING selvedge denim. As I’ve said before the best part of making your own clothes is getting to pick your ideal materials. And this denim is just gorgeous.
The pattern recommends making a toile first to refine fit. I’m too impulsive to do this. But these are a touch too big...so next time (and there will be a next time) I will go down an entire size.
The thing about jeans is there is so much topstitching...so the neatness of your sewing really starts to matter. I definitely had a few rip-outs trying to get things as perfect as possible.
The shape of this pattern is very fun and feels cool to me (though a bit weird and not “standard” women’s tight-fitting jeans—which I like). The original pattern has a very long inseam with the intention of big cuffs—but I liked the cropped wider leg.
Even a bit too big I will wear the hell out of these. I really love them.
Next up is some #persephonepants out of the most amazing Japanese selvedge denim.
Happy to answer any questions for anyone thinking of making these! 👖👖
When I first made these #persephonepants I mostly styled them kind of dressed up, with my fancy clogs and a nicer top. But lately I’ve been enjoying them as a more casual piece in my wardrobe. I’ve worn them three times already this week, so I think dressing them down actually gives them an upgrade.
#fall10x10 starts on Monday and I’m considering joining, but I’m not sure if it’s something I really want to do or if I’m just feeling FOMO. Have you done a 10x10? Did you get anything out of it?
I LOVE YOU PERSEPHONE ▪️ This is becoming redundant, right? But I just finished the ultimate mom jeans and 😻. 12 oz denim made things a bit tricky but it’s so worth it. They’re great in this weight and I’m looking forward to this medium wash denim fading and getting some abuse. ▪️▪️▪️ I’m in between sizes and decided to go with the larger size this time. I also noticed with my other pair that I wanted more room in the rise. I used the lengthening line on the leg again to add 1.5 inches to the inseam but it ended up being too much so I deepened the hem. I wanted them to sit right above the ankle. They’re so comfortable! 🎉 ▪️▪️▪️ Rather than using topstitching thread (which I knew would be a bitch to use on this heavy denim) I threaded the machine with 2 strands of regular thread and I think it looks ok! Yippee! #persephonepants
¡Hola amores! .
Over my social media break I did a LOT of things. I sewed 6 pieces of clothing for myself, 5 pieces of clothing for my kids, painted 2 new paintings, taught a few art and sewing classes, and finished reading 3 books. I quickly realized how much time I’d been wasting scrolling and checking, etc. At the same time I missed the interaction with people who also love sewing and creating the way I do! (Though I did get to chat a lot via Marco Polo with my bestie @independentclothinginitiative ) My goal from here on out is to spend intentional time over here in this space but not just mindless time whenever I have one free moment. Bc those free moments add up. I have fun things planned and hope to take you all on this adventure with me. So get ready, and start practicing your dance moves for the contest I’ll be posting soon!! 😜 .
Also— I got a new phone that takes better photos (I had an iphone6 before) so I was playing with it the day I took these photos in my new top!
Pants: #persephonepants in twill from @joann_stores
Top: #naniiro#naniirofabric from @makermountainfabrics (And it was hacked Japanese dress pattern)
Some autumn fabric shopping 🍂✨ Two denims- one cream, one ”vintage” blue. On the way to become more #persephonepants and 2 soft jerseys- for some cozy and effortless #seamworktacara let the sewing begin! 🙊✂️ all fabrics from @kashi_fabric
Handmade warmth. I should have packed long johns for the chilly mornings here, but as long as I'm wrapped in my #hoarfrostshawl , I'm pretty comfortable. Heading out for a hike with my middle child, big brother, and niece. Savoring the crisp air and gorgeous views. Tomorrow we head to Berkeley for the day. Wearing: #persephonepants + #metamorphicdress + #ramonacardigan + #hoarfrostshawl .
I'm so pleased to have finished my #ramonacardigan in time to wear in the chilly Sierra Nevadas! It is un-blocked and un-buttoned, but I'll remedy that once I get home. Made with @madelinetosh in the Joshua Tree colorway. Appropriately California. Worn with my Cone Mills mint denim #persephonepants . 🌲🌲🌲
I’m loving my #uniformcardigan in @quinceandco owl. I love the knit your own adventure aspect of this pattern! Choices I made were short, A-line shaping with bell sleeves and inset pockets. Can’t wait to plan a second version. I’m wearing it over a newly made #plantaintee in bamboo-cotton jersey from @blackbirdfabrics. And #persephonepants obviously 💁🏼♀️
Not a quilt, but I couldn’t not share that I made PANTS! These #persephonepants in a dark 12oz denim are my new faves and were real fun to make. Plus these funky buttons I got from @drygoodsdesign secret button stash in Seattle make ‘em even better. Still don’t know how to model clothes without feeling super awkward, but the satisfaction of making my own clothes overrides.
Make way for the post-millenial layering generation. 🤣 She has topped off this rainbow-and-pegasus-heavy look with a mama-knit cardigan with cat buttons. The "boring" (her words) mom look to the side is composed of #persephonepants , @pamutapparel top, and #wikstenkimono . 😆 #handmadefall10x10
I made (Persephone) pants!!!!🎉 I procrastinated forever with these.😅 Button fly vs. zipper fly. If I do a zipper, do I go with a grown-on fly front or separate fly front. Curved waistband vs straight and so on. I finally ended up with a grown-on fly zip front and curved waistband (borrowed from Peppermint magazine’s Wide Leg pants pattern). I’m super happy with the fit, but might consider adding more width to the front thigh next time. Worn here with an Aster blouse. #persephonepants#asterblouse
Today I’m grateful for living so near the sea.
I’m not a big beach person, at least according to my husband. I prefer my beach experience rocky, grey, and moody, but we live 4 miles from sun and sand in one of its most iconic forms.
However, this is the first fall I’ve spent living this close to the beach, and the overcast mornings, fresh breezes, and crisp evenings have me feeling very fall and very grateful. We sat on the porch on Friday evening watching a lightening storm over the Pacific, and I realized I likely have years ahead of me to enjoy my south facing home. I’ve used the phrase California hygge to describe my design style, I think it applies to my personal style, and it might just work for my whole approach to each day: slow paced, focused on joy and community, generally cozy, getting outside as much as possible, creating things all the time. I’m enjoying all the cozy seaside feelings so much!
Finally made the #persephonepants by @annaallenclothing. I chose a very think and rigid 100% cotton duck canvas (to my disappointment, the name has nothing to do with ducks) and some funny scraps for the pockets and facings.
I cannot recommend this pattern enough! After making the shorts version for summer I was complete hooked. It is an incredibly well drafted pattern, and I cannot think of a body shape which would not look amazing in these. Can't wait to take them for a spin tomorrow!
Finally found the right colour for my wool top and am really digging it's compatibility with everything.
I dyed it with olive green conventional fabric dye three times over, each time a bit darker. Then added turmeric, the only natural yellow I could source in May, to try and make it more olive. You can see the colour in one of my posts that month. Last week, I tried native sunflowers (thanks for the tip @katestangledstring), then dipped it in an iron bath. It really didn't turned into this shade until I washed it in baking soda, which deepened the colour and also eliminated the fermented plant odour.
Like everyone else, we’re obsessed with the #wikstenkimono ! 🙌 @zotterpop made the longest length out of Kolkata Cloth in Slate (this color now sold out and discontinued, but we have seven other colors!) and Cross Stitch textured yarn dyed cotton. @fabriclady3’s Wiksten Kimono is the mid length in Brick boiled wool/viscose with a Dakota ikat lining. Suzan is also wearing a #dressno1 and Olivia wears a #willowtank and denim #persephonepants 👯♀️ #stonemountainfabric
#persephonepants for life 🖤
@annaallenclothing you are a genius! I am in love with these pants and have 2 more lined up. The fit was perfection- no mods apart from swapping the button fly for a zipper. •the high waist 👌🏽
The lack of side seam makes them hang perfectly and they are just really comfortable to wear. 🖤
I had not planed to start my pants sewing journey in 2018... i thought maybe some time in 2030 I will feel strong enough to dare it... but this year my sewing got speed and I felt like why not try??? These are my first #persephonepants in a delicious cotton twill that has a fleece back side, perfect fabric!!! I cut a size 2 but after wearing them 2 days (in a row because once you have them on you do not want to take them off) I see that this fabric is very flexible and maybe a size less would seat better. I am a bit concerned with the length. It is fine with sneakers but I am not sure if I like this ankle length with other types of shoes... what do you think?? Should I make them longer next time?? The fabric is from casa dello scampolo in Mantova and the top is a hack of the #blousestockholm from #atelierscammit#memadeeveryday
Three #persephonepants and I think that will do (?) 👌🏼I know some have made 5 + pairs! Has there been any other pattern with so many repeats? I can’t think of one! I used a 11.5oz canvas this time and they’re definitely stiff and not as giving as denim in the same weight but still supremely comfortable, supportive and hug in all the right places. Like a friend. But pants.
Sometimes I make a garment, like my pink Persephones, and I think yes, I’m happy, it’s done, I can move on. But deep in my mind is a voice saying no, you haven’t really solved it, you’re not really done. Then, as happened this week, I wake up knowing I won’t have any peace until I go back and truly get it right. So here they are, Persephone 2.0, in the actual right size for me, 8 graded to 10 at the hip (I’m a 29W/38H). I used a zipper fly because I’ve accepted the fact that for me button flies are a cool idea but an unflattering reality. After looking at the work of @yuneho_official lately, I skipped the button and kept the topstitching minimal. #persephonepants#annaallenclothing#isewmyownclothes#seweveryday
I made these back at the beginning of the summer and finally have blogged about them. Two pairs of @annaallenclothing #persephonepants which must win the award for Pattern of the Year. (Hey should we be having annual awards ceremonies with all sorts of different categories and host it in LA or Cannes and to which we could wear self-stitched couture gowns and borrowed jewels from Van Cleef?) I also talk about mental health as it was #worldmentalhealthday2018 day on Wednesday. But you can skip that bit if you just want to see pretty pants.
EDITED: To add that I drafted the blue jacket and hope to blog about it soon.
Persephone pants number 3 with RTW shirt with a bit of a 70s country feel. I’m pretty happy though pics are hard in the morning in the back alley. Modified with a zipper fly and back patch pockets (thanks for help on stories with choosing them) Sure there are wrinkles showing they aren’t perfect but fitting every pair I realize they’re all different. This divine dark indigo denim is cone mills from a local store @_theworkroom that has been in my stash for about a year. It has a little stretch perhaps I should have sized down. Special thanks to @clever_tinker who was sent many, many photos of my crotch and butt to get this pair over the line 🙌#persephonepants @annaallenclothing #sewistsofinstagram#indiesewing#memadeeveryday#memadewardrobe#torontosews#fallsewing#sewsewsew#sewingpants
#Persephone pants #5 and I feel like I’ve finally nailed the fit! I sized down from my actual size after seeing that @sewliberated did so to great effect. I had some wedgie issues initially (I know that it’s a thing nowadays but I don’t think I can confidently rock the wedgie) but I managed to resolve them by increasing the width of the crotch seam. I love all my Persephone’s, but these are by far my favourite. Now I’ve just gotta figure out how to keep those hems off the floor in public toilets (I’m currently tucking into my socks but summer is around the corner). OCD problems 🤣. So much love for this pattern @annaallenclothing !!! .
Some makes are meant to be celebrated 🎉🎉🎉 I am celebrating my new #persephonepants by wearing them 3 days in a row😬. Today was a beautiful sunny Seattle day. I wore my pants with my #monroeturtleneck and loved the combo. Honestly I could wear these two pieces of clothing on a color rotation daily. Those of you asking, just wear white!! Don’t wear white while cooking or drinking wine, but for your every day running around it shouldn’t be a problem. It’s such a great color to have in rotation!! Another tip for turtle necks- you must have a nice supportive bra to make it work!😉 Now what are you waiting for? Go make those pants!!
Oh my dear little blouse ... you are loved. Not in the same way as my children, of course, but I chose your fiber with care and intention, knowing that if you felt like butter on my skin, I would appreciate you all the more. You hold within you cloudy days of hand stitching, cutting mistakes made and mended, deep breaths as sibling squabbles were also mended. I have more decorative, hand stitched plans for you this afternoon as we weather the storm with audio books and Mary Poppins. 💚 Details: #roscoeblouse , pattern by @truebias , sewn in a size 0 (though I measured a 4), shortened by 5 inches, shortened ties, omitted sleeve cuff gathering. Sewn in caramel Mora slub linen blend from @stonemountainfabric . Worn with my black #persephonepants . #slowfashionoctober
Persephone pants in mint Cone Mills denim. 💚 I really love wearing this shape. Makes me feel 💪 - that "if I can make my own fitted pants I can basically do anything" kind of confidence. Yet another reason to curate a handmade wardrobe. #slowfashionoctober#persephonepants worn with a #stratatop .
Hey you yes you! Looking pretty good in those fly #persephonepants !! Gahhhhh I love them!!! Where have you been all my life!! Each month I will be making one pair! By the end of the year I will have 12. Too excessive? Today I am wearing my pants with my favorite #shirtno1 by @sonyaphilip out of a linen blend remanent.
The only mods I made to the pattern- pants - I added extra length to the bottom hem , but still sewed the wide seam allowance . They hit right above the ankle. I sized down to a size 8 ( normally a 10 but hey I am jogging 7 miles a week 😬) from everyone’s suggestions and could not be happier with the fit!! On to sewing for #seattlefrocktails coming in a could of weeks!! I think Persephones can work for the occasion! 🎊🍾🎉🎉
